The cloud is disrupting how businesses operate, and changing the way people work and access information. Whether you’re just beginning your journey to cloud computing or you’ve adopted it throughout your business, the platform that supports your strategy deserves thoughtful consideration. Oracle Senior Vice President, PaaS, BI, and EPM Business Groups Steve Daheb talks about the pivotal role platform as a service (PaaS) has in helping businesses innovate faster, spend less, and connect people with the right information.
Q. How can customers rationalize their existing on-premises investments with newer cloud investments?
A. Achieving digital transformation is not a question of choosing between cloud and on-premises offerings. The foundation of all information technology is managing information. It’s about mobilizing, securing, and visualizing information. It’s about sharing the information that fuels our applications, and it’s about connecting people and businesses to information. That’s what Oracle has always done better than anybody else. As Larry Ellison says, “Don’t assemble the information, take advantage of it.”
Today, Oracle technology is allowing people to easily collect, access, and share information, and connect their applications with the information that is the lifeblood of those applications. Oracle Cloud solutions coexist with your current investments and allow you to extend their functionality to the cloud.
Q. What is the significance of the hybrid cloud?
A. An information strategy needs to span both on-premises and cloud-based environments because information lives in both places. Information flows through all things, all applications, all devices, and you have to be able to address all of these together. A hybrid cloud strategy enables you to tackle both sides, like a bridge, and allows you to go back and forth between your legacy and future on-premises investments with the cloud. It also allows you to migrate workloads between on premises and the cloud to suit business needs and to not be limited by what technology dictates. It’s a strategy that gives you choice, whether that choice is a private cloud, software as a service (SaaS), or any combination that suits your specific business and industry needs.
Oracle’s integrated portfolio of cloud platform services delivers complete capabilities for application development, integration, content sharing and collaboration, business analytics, mobile technology, enterprise management, and data management. Only Oracle offers this full technology continuum that can enable customers regardless of where they might be on their journey to the cloud.
Q. Mobile is a key trend and many organizations have made significant strides in mobile operations. How do Oracle’s solutions aid with SaaS mobile extensions, rapid application development, and mobile innovation?
A. Mobile innovation is really part of the overall conversation about getting users the information they need, in the context in which they need it. For that to work, you need to manage mobility from a centralized platform that gives mobile developers easy access to everything they need, including services such as user management, offline data, push notification, and storage. You also need a way to cut application development time and ensure consistency. Again, the platform is the key to success. Built-in components such as rapid application development kits and UX templates enable easy mobile extensions for applications.
Q. How do Oracle Cloud solutions offer specific benefits to app developers, IT architects, and line-of-business users?
A. In order to have a platform that meets the needs of all of your stakeholders, you’ve got to understand who the stakeholders are, and speak their language.
For corporate IT and DBAs, it’s about having the same database technology on premises and in the cloud. It’s about speed of provisioning, ease of administration, and ease of ongoing maintenance.
For developers it’s about building rich, high-performance apps. It’s about mobilizing the apps in the back end to support that, and giving them familiar tools to build robust, engaging, and secure apps.
For architects it’s about sandboxing and development testing and managing cloud offerings, on-premises offerings, and mobile technology together.
For line-of-business (LOB) managers, it’s about the information—how can business users easily access and consume information within the context of their business process using innovative tools such as visual analytics, regardless of where they are?
And for business analysts, it’s about giving them information that is connected across disparate sources along with the tools they need to shorten the time it takes to build analytics dashboards, helping them uncover patterns faster, and enabling them to collaborate on that analysis with LOB stakeholders.
Q. What is unique about Oracle’s value proposition?
A. Oracle’s approach is about building an information platform upon which you can run your business; one that spans infrastructure, services, databases, and applications. A hybrid cloud strategy enables you to address both cloud and on-premises needs and allows you to go back and forth, protecting both your legacy and your future technology investments. As a result, you can choose any combination of deployment model based on your business needs. Only Oracle offers the choice of both public and private cloud services. And unlike its competitors, Oracle gives its customers the flexibility to change their deployment model from private to public, or perhaps to bring a public cloud application back in-house.
