Your Way to a Connected, Engaging, and Intelligent HR

Did you know? 93% of the employees are ready to take orders from bots, but only 6% of the HR professionals have any known plans to deploy AI in the workplace1. Instant gratification is the new norm. In a normal day, you could be ordering food, booking a summer vacation, handling your finances, or just shopping online for the newest fashions from your mobile device. There is no room for downtime, yet so many enterprises struggle to offer a simple, intuitive, and powerful experience to their employees. Employee engagement is at the core of HR. Highly engaged businesses see a 10% increase in customer rating2, 20% increase in sales2 and 26% higher annual revenue growth3; yet, the US economy suffers a loss of more than $500 billion per year because of employee disengagement 4. Imagine an employee who just found a great deal for a family vacation. However, they have to run a query through HR to check vacation balance before they can book the trip. By the time they’ve received a confirmation, the deal has expired, and you end with a frustrated and distracted employee. Now imagine the same employee merely sending a text message to a digital assistant that instantly confirms their vacation status, and you’ve got yourself a very different situation! HR is a business enabler. Although HR has been traditionally known to process HR transactions, many are now thinking out-of-the-box to deliver solutions that are personal, adaptable, and provide intelligence to employees in new ways. HR has evolved into a powerful business enabler rather than a simple administrative helpdesk. Take a look at this infographic to learn about technologies that can help you attain a more connected engaged and intelligent enterprise.

What Everybody Ought to Know About Today's Oracle Blockchain Platform Release

Oracle Blockchain Platform announced the availability of its latest release today, the 19.1.3. It is an incredibly proud moment for the entire team. A key piece of today's announcement is the evidence that Oracle's enterprise-grade blockchain platform is already winning the hearts and minds of our enterprise customers in a short time since the launch back in July 2018. This speaks to the value the platform has created for our valued customers.  Here is what everyone ought to know about the latest release and the benefits:   Customers Go Live: Production Use of Oracle Blockchain Platform The announcement showcases several of our enterprise customers that are now deployed in production on the Oracle blockchain platform - Circulor, SERES, and CDEL. Additionally, Arab Jordan Investment Bank, CargoSmart, Certified Origins, HealthSync, ICS Financial Systems, NeuroSoft, Nigeria Customs, OriginTrail, and TradeFin have built or integrated their production-ready blockchain applications on Oracle Blockchain Platform. "Oracle's blockchain solution delivers enterprise performance, security and scalability right out-of-the-box," said Doug Johnson-Poensgen, CEO and founder of Circulor. "We started with the Oracle Blockchain Platform four months ago and were able to go from zero to a production system spanning multiple organizations in a matter of months. Another key advantage is that we were able to integrate Oracle's blockchain platform into a hybrid blockchain network spanning multiple clouds and easily integrate with our existing systems and applications."    New Features in Oracle Blockchain Platform 19.1.3 Key themes for this release are productivity and privacy enhancements for IT/DevOps and smart contract application developers. Oracle has added developer-oriented productivity enhancements, enhanced privacy, confidentiality, and identity management features that are critical to diverse organizations conducting business transactions. New DevOps capabilities make the platform easier to integrate with existing business and IT systems. Additionally, as blockchain becomes an important data store in the enterprise, the platform enables Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse customers to transparently capture blockchain transaction history and current state data for analytics and to integrate it with other data sources. New features include: Enhanced world state database to support standard SQL-based ledger queries reducing the complexity of developing chaincode using readily available programming skills, ensure smart contracts can safely rely on the query results, which are verified at transaction commit, and significantly boost the performance of rich data queries. Rich history database shadows transaction history into a relational database schema in the Autonomous Data Warehouse or other Oracle databases, which transparently enables analytics integration for interactive dashboards and reports. Here is an example of the use of rich history stored on Oracle's Autonomous Datawarehouse and visualized using Oracle Analytics Cloud.   Enhanced REST APIs for event subscription, blockchain administration/configuration, and monitoring of network health, transaction rates, and other statistics, which simplify integration with existing enterprise IT tools. Identity federation further extends authentication capabilities to work with external identity providers to facilitate consortium blockchains with many diverse participants using their existing identity management systems. Third-party certificate support for registering client organizations on the blockchain network to enable them to use existing certificates issued by trusted third parties. Hyperledger Fabric 1.3 support, which adds many new features based on the evolving open source version, including chaincode development in Java, further leveraging existing enterprise skills, and support for private transactions among a subset of members, preserving privacy and business confidentiality. This demonstrates Oracle’s commitment to stay current with the Hyperledger community by leveraging new releases and contributing to the open source community.    Summary: Oracle Expands Its Enterprise Blockchain Platform This new 19.1.3 release of the Oracle Blockchain Platform highlights Oracle's continued strength and customer momentum in enterprise blockchain space. Enterprises around the world have come to trust Oracle Blockchain platform for their demanding production deployments. Oracle continues to invest and develop its Blockchain Platform to provide fully-managed and production-ready enterprise blockchain cloud platform that is based on open source Hyperledger Fabric project. Oracle Cloud on a Roll: From One ‘Next Big Things’ Session to Another.

The Oracle Open World Showcase in London this January We wrapped up an exciting Open World in London last month with a spotlight on all things Oracle Cloud. Hands-on Labs and demos took center stage to showcase the hottest use cases in apps and converged infrastructure (IaaS + PaaS).  From autonomous databases and analytics, platform solutions for SaaS -  like a digital assistant (Chatbot), app and data integration, and API gateways for any SaaS play across verticals, and cloud-native application development on OCI, we ran a series of use cases. Several customers joined us on stage for various keynote streams to share their experience and to demonstrate the richness of Oracle’s offering. Macty’s (an Oracle Global Startup Ecosystem Partner) Move from AWS to the Oracle Cloud Macty is one such customer who transitioned out of AWS to Oracle Cloud to build their fashion e-commerce platform with a focus on AI/ML to power visual search. Navigating AWS was hard for Macty. Expensive support, complex pricing choices, lack of automated backups for select devices, and delays in getting to the support workforce were some of the reasons why Macty embarked on to Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure. Macty used Oracle’s bare metal GPU to train deep learning models. They used the compartments to isolate and use the correct billing for customers and the DevCS platform (Terraform and Ansible) to update and check the environment from a deployment and configuration perspective. Macty’s CEO @Susana Zoghbi presented the Macty success story with the VP of Oracle Cloud, Ashish Mohindroo. She demonstrated the power of the Macty chatbot (through Facebook Messenger) that was built on Oracle’s platform to enable e-commerce vendors to engage with their customers better.  The other solutions that Macty brings with their AI/API powered platform are: a recommendation engine to complete the look in real time, find similar items, customize the fashion look, and get customer analytics to connect e-commerce with the in-store experience. Any of these features can be used by e-commerce stores to delight their customers and up their game against big retailers.  And now, Oracle Open World is Going to Dubai! Ashish Mohindroo, VP of Oracle Cloud will be keynoting the Next Big Things session again and this time at the Oracle Open World in Dubai next week. He will be accompanied by Asser Smidt, Founder of BotSupply (an Oracle Global Startup Ecosystem Partner). BotSupply assists companies with conversational bots, have an award-winning multi-lingual NLP and are also a leader in conversational design. While Ashish and Asser are going to explore conversational AI and design via bots powered by Oracle cloud, Ashish is also going to elaborate on how Oracle Blockchain and Oracle IoT are becoming building blocks for extending modern applications in his ‘Bringing Enterprises to Blockchain’ session. He will be accompanied by Ghassan Sarsak from ICS Financial Services, and Thrasos Thrasyvoulu from the Oracle Cloud Platform App Dev team. Last, but never the least, Ashish will explain how companies can build compelling user interfaces with augmented reality (AR/VR) and show how content is at the core of this capability. Oracle content cloud makes it easy for customers to build these compelling experiences on any channel: mobile, web, and any other device. So if you're in Dubai next week, swing by the OOW floor.

What CEOs Really Want from Blockchain

A popular technology and business publication, eWeek, ran an article recently. The article talked about what CEOs and enterprise leaders really want from emerging technologies such as Blockchain and AI. I was naturally curious as these are areas my team is deeply involved in. It has a fitting quote from our CEO, Mark Hurd, who recently gave a keynote address at BlockLand (Blockchain) event in Cleveland. “This nonsense about: ‘These are separate solutions, and you’re going to extract data from an application, send it to some other solution that’s called blockchain or some other solution that’s called AI’—that’s not how the market’s going to end,”  - Mark Hurd, CEO, Oracle.                   The article and Mark's quote summarized well what we are seeing in the field among our Cloud customers for these emerging technologies. The enterprise CEOs want to "invest" in technology that not only allows them to reduce cost but also to drive newer revenue streams and profitability. And a key to driving new revenue streams and profitability with Blockchain and AI is to make these technologies transparently available through new and existing enterprise applications. Enterprises want to focus on their business, and less on managing and maintaining the ever changing technology stack.   Oracle's strategy is aligned with this approach. We enable enterprises to easily consume and manage Blockchain through a fully-managed Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service that offers complete flexibility to develop Blockchain networks and solutions. The blockchain platform comes pre-integrated with Identity management, other Oracle PaaS tooling, and provides plug-and-play integrations with backend ERP, Supply Chain, Human Capital applications.  To learn more about Oracle's Blockchain Products and Strategy, please visit here.  To read the eWeek article, please visit here.

Opportunity to Order Workflow: Integrating Salesforce with NetSuite - Part 2

In our previous post, we demonstrated how Oracle Integration Cloud can automate your 'Opportunity to Order' workflow to help you achieve synchronization between your Salesforce and NetSuite applications. In this post, I will show you how easy it is to set up this integration flow between Salesforce and NetSuite. The setup begins with the creation of individual connections for Salesforce and NetSuite using Oracle Integration Cloud's designer console. First add the authentication credentials to access your application environments. Once the connections are saved and tested, we proceed to the next steps of creating an integration process flow through drag and drop, configuring the adapters, and defining the mapping. Finally a single click activates your integration to achieve bi-directional synchronization between Salesforce and NetSuite. Watch this video created by the Oracle Learning Library Team (YouTube channel) for a complete demo of the steps involved in using Integration Cloud Service to setup and configure your 'Opportunity to Order' workflow between Salesforce and NetSuite. Opportunity to Order Workflow: Integrating Salesforce with NetSuite

Integrating your front-end CRM with your back-end ERP application can often be a time-consuming and tedious task. Today, I will demonstrate how your 'Opportunity to Order' workflow can be easily automated with bi-directional integration. Let's begin with an opportunity created by your sales rep in Salesforce. Once the opportunity has progressed to a closed and won stage, Oracle Integration Cloud automatically invokes an integration request along with the opportunity metadata to trigger a new order fulfillment request in NetSuite. The new Sales Order ID created in NetSuite is automatically synced back to the original Salesforce opportunity along with the order fulfillment details, thereby completing the 'Opportunity to Order' workflow. Watch this video created by the Oracle Learning Library Team (YouTube channel) to learn how Oracle Integration Cloud can help you automate your sales processes to achieve bi-directional synchronization in record time. And stay tuned for my next post for a detailed step-by-step walk through of the whole integration process. Robust Cloud and Emerging Tech Strategy: Imperative to Business Success

By: Savita Raina   A few years ago, IT organizations were in a dilemma about whether or not to leverage cloud as part of their IT strategy; however, that is not the case today. Cloud is required and critical for a robust enterprise technology & business strategy and organizations are looking into how to leverage cloud to meet their specific business need. Future is - more applications in cloud Today, cloud is leveraged to bring agility and innovation to enterprises challenged by digitalization, cultural shifts in the workforce, and demanding customers who expect services to be delivered in real time. With cloud, businesses increase efficiency, productivity and collaboration among their customers, partners and employees. Cloud technology helps organizations reach new geographies, reducing time to market and opening up new revenue generation opportunities. Now more than ever, with cloud technologies in place, organizations can better analyze their data in real-time, helping organizations make data driven business decisions to maneuver the fast paced evolving markets. According to IDC, by 2020 67% of IT infrastructure and software will be based in the cloud. This highlights the need for a cloud platform that can offer capabilities to developers to build, deploy and run new applications in cloud.  For IT management and line of business (LoB) leaders there is a clear need for platform services that can connect and extend their on-premises and cloud applications to maximize investments already made yet focus on innovation, scale and enterprise agility. Don’t forget to check out our newest podcast on iTunes (or access via alternate channels) to further explore the impact cloud and emerging tech has on your business. Cloud democratizes emerging tech We are seeing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Blockchain, IoT permeate every aspect of work and life. As per some recent Gartner surveys: ‘By 2020 - 20% of citizens in developed nations will use AI assistants to help them with everyday operational tasks. [source] 85% of CIOs will be piloting AI programs through a combination of buy, build and outsource efforts [source] By 2030, Blockchain-focused initiatives will generate some $3 trillion in business value annually with blockchain use cases continuously expanding as the market matures.’ [source] These technologies are augmenting human intelligence, building trust & transparency while opening up new avenues for business exploration.  Utilization of emerging tech in enterprise eco-systems seems to be a strategic imperative for line of business and IT management. At the same time, emerging tech equally offers new venues to drive creativity and build new innovation among the developers and data scientists. The story of emerging tech that is fueling this new growth for businesses will be incomplete if we don’t talk about cloud. It is right to say that cloud is the precursor and enabler to help bring these technologies to the forefront of enterprises and end customers who are going to benefit from these technologies tremendously. Cloud truly is democratizing emerging tech to help it become mainstream. Cloud-based, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Solution Transforms Student Experience Based on my own experience I can say that university or college admission process can be daunting task for both the parent as well as a student. What if the stress could be taken out from the entire student application process? This is exactly what University of Adelaide, Australia did. They transformed their student application experience from stress to awesomeness by leveraging Oracle Intelligent bot. Students now could chat with a self-learning bot to access their ATAR score – the number that is used to gain access to the university in Australia. Having access to this technology made it very easy for students to gather the information they need, when they need it without having to wait for hours for university representative to get back to them. A record of 2100 unique conversations were conducted on the very first day of launch of service, leading to 40 % reduction in  call volume to the university’s enquiry service. This reduction of call volume not only helped enhance overall student experience but also increased university staff call center productivity allowing them to focus on more critical student queries. Watch this video to hear Catherine Cherry, the Associate Director Student Recruitment at University of Adelaide, Australia speak about how Oracle Intelligent bot helped University transform student experience and overall university call center  productivity. Learn how the AI/ML based Oracle Autonomous Cloud could transform your business to drive innovation. Two sides of the same coin Just like a coin has two sides, new opportunities come with a new set of challenges. Lack of skillset, adoption of new cultural norms, and the quick arrival of new technologies are making it harder for organizations to prioritize.  So, in these fast-paced, changing business environments it becomes critical that businesses invest time to understand how cloud computing along with new emerging technologies can impact your business. Blockchain Use Case: Automotive Contract Manufacturing

It’s no secret that the benefits of blockchain are being seen across a wide variety of industries.  This shouldn’t surprise anyone with benefits such as accelerating business processes and reducing costs and risk.  The manufacturing industry alone is full of use cases for blockchain, including:   Real-time tracking of goods throughout the transportation process Recording of important data across the supply chain Certifying the authenticity of products across the supply chain Sharing of IoT data across disparate systems of record   One great example of blockchain in manufacturing is automotive contract manufacturing.  The process of building a car often begins with the original equipment manufacturer or OEM.  The process might look something like this:   The stakeholders in this case are: An OEM: Original Equipment manufacturer to product parts, such as a company like Bosch A car Manufacturer like Toyota A third party logistics (3PL) company to organize the transit A trucking company to bring the cars from the ports to the dealers The car dealer, perhaps Toyota of San Francisco, that sells cars to consumers   These parties most likely all have different systems of records.  Each of these stakeholders has blocks of information stored in their system of record during this contract manufacturing process.  In the blockchain, all information can be accessed by any permissioned stakeholder at any time.  The resulting process could look something like this:   Each of these parties needs to know, real-time if anything happens during these supply chain processes.  The quicker the parties are alerted to any issues, the faster they can be resolved so as not to delay the process.  A Blockchain based system connected with IoT sensors would provide permissioned parties with a real-time and transparent end-to-end view of vehicle location and status.  Smart contracts can also be used if a certain parameter goes over a pre-defined threshold (e.g. continuous vibration for a certain amount of time).  These smart contracts can then trigger a follow-on activity such as a reorder of the damaged parts, etc.  Alerting parties as the damage occurs can provide them with extra time to resolve the issue.   The benefits of this manufacturing blockchain system include: Improvement of just-in-time logistics Reduction in errors or damages Reduced lead times due to enhanced processes, especially on build-to-order vehicles   All these benefits can, in turn, be passed on to the customers in the form of faster delivery and even cost savings.  There is no question that blockchain can be beneficial in a number of manufacturing use cases.  If you are working on an interesting project related to the use of Blockchain for the manufacturing industry, feel free to get in touch by leaving a comment or contact us with your use case. We’d be glad to help you connect with our subject matter experts and with your industry peers who may be working on similar use cases with Oracle. Train your Intelligent Chatbot for Q&A

In our previous post, we demonstrated how Oracle Cloud Platform makes it easy to create your own chatbot. In this post, we will discuss how your chatbot can be easily trained to answer common business queries. A common use of chatbots is to answer questions from customers about products and services, such as "when does your bank open?" or "how can I open an account?". Since these queries are quite basic in nature, it would be unnecessary for your application server to initiate a transaction flow in your backend to generate responses for these queries. Often businesses have such questions & answers documented in their FAQs or Knowledge Base. You can now leverage the ability of Oracle Intelligent Bots to learn these FAQs and Q&A combinations for answering common customer queries seamlessly without any server overhead or human intervention. Watch this video created by the Oracle Mobile Platform Team (YouTube channel) to learn more about the QnA feature available in Oracle Intelligent Bots to train your chatbot in no time by leveraging AI-powered Natural Language Processing (NLP). To read about a real-world use of Oracle Intelligent Chatbots to reduce contact center costs, see this University of Adelaide chatbot deployment. Oracle Blockchain update: Hyperledger Fabric v1.1 support and much more

Written by:  Nassir Khan, Product Marketing, Oracle     Oracle is focused on improving its blockchain platform by continuously releasing new and enhanced features to support our rapidly growing user base. In July, we made the following enhancements:- Support for Hyperledger Fabric 1.1 which has some of the following features and capabilities:- Node.js chaincode support: With the support of Hyperledger Fabric 1.1, Node.js chaincodes are now also supported thus appealing to a wide array of developers who find Node.js easier to work with than other languages as well as the fact that it has a wider array of developers’ tools All SDKs(Node.js, Java and GO) and Fabric CA are now updated to support Hyperledger Fabric 1.1 Connection profiles are supported and can be generated from the OABCS console Developer packages and samples, available in the App Dev area of the console’s Developer’s Tools tab, were updated to use connection profiles Attribute-based access control (ABAC) is supported   SQL- based rich queries It is now much easier to compose business queries that can be understood by blockchain. OABCS chaincodes can use SQL to create rich queries for state-of-the-world OABCS chaincode rich queries can use CouchDB query syntax for compatibility   New peer alias field This field can be used to append the peer’s name with an alias that helps one easily identify the peer and what it is used for   Transient map and REST proxy A transient map can be used to pass data when you invoke or query a chaincode from REST proxy.   Chaincode container optimization Older versions of chaincode are stopped when a new version of chaincode is instantiated on a channel. This frees up system resources consumed by unused chaincode containers.   In summary, Oracle is committed to continually update its blockchain platform to improve performance, keep pace with developers’ needs, and make it easier to build, deploy and manage blockchain networks. We take feedback from our rapidly expanding user base and turn that feedback into features that will help improve the overall service. Exelon's Customer Connections Extend Beyoned Power Lines and into Chatbots

Exelon is a Fortune 100 company and by customer count, the United States' largest energy generator, transmitter, and seller.  It owns six different utilities along the East Coast and in Illinois, and is responsible for electricity and natural gas delivery to approximately 10 million customers. When customers complain about a power outage or their monthly bills, or when Exelon wants to ask customers to reduce energy use in an effort to manage the power grid, naturally, both parties desire a quick and effective communication solution.  That's why Exelon is currently using Oracle Mobile Cloud Enterprise (MCE) to build a chatbot that uses natural language processing and artificial intelligence to understand and respond to customer queries across a number of different messaging platforms. Currently, over 4.1 billion people use messaging apps. Although email refuses to die, and in some cases, people still actually do call each other, mobile messaging has exploded, and with the popularity of apps like Facebook Messenger, Slack, and WeChat, many businesses realize that they must now engage customers in this preferred communication channel. This engagement, however, is easier said than done.  Thanks to the on-demand nature of today's information, customers expect to have any questions answered quickly, using relevant data, and to have those answers personalized.  That's where chatbots come in. Chatbots that use natural language processing and machine learning, like Oracle Intelligent Bots, can adapt to how different people ask similar questions, analyze the intents of these questions, and provide relevant, contextualized answers to each customer.  What does this mean, exactly?  When a customer asks "how much do I owe this month?" a chatbot will reply "You're bill is $65.47," instead of providing a similar experience to that of a "dumb" phone tree where multiple selections must be made before arriving at a canned answer. Exelon built its portfolio in several acquisitions across the energy sector, and each subsidiary has its own back-end systems, from billing to power outage monitoring.  Connecting these systems together isn't easy, especially when the goal is to build a consumer-facing user interface that can respond naturally to human language and provide personalized answers within seconds.  That's why Exelon used micro-service and API features built into MCE to expose their back-end systems so that they could connect easily with front-end user interfaces like chatbots. As a part of MCE, Oracle Intelligent Bots allows users to not only build, test, and deploy AI-powered chatbots quickly (in Exelon's case, the prototype took less than two weeks to complete), but it also eliminates the complexity of writing different code for different channels. With Oracle Intelligent Bots, "we don't have to write the same logic six different times for six different channels," says Rajesh Kumar Thakur, Exelon's Principal Architect, "that's what Oracle is offering us."     To read the full story in Forbes, you can click here.   For more information about Oracle Intelligent Bots, click here, or visit oracle.com/bots.

Getting Started with Blockchain

Blockchain is driving innovation, reducing costs, and improving security across industries such as finance, insurance, supply chain, retail, and manufacturing. Today enterprises are actively looking at adopting blockchain to create robust solutions to reliably share data and conduct trusted transactions across their business ecosystems. In simple terms, blockchain is a system for maintaining distributed ledgers. It is maintained in such a way that allows the ledger to be shared among different groups of non-trusting parties without requiring a central administrator in order to harden security. In contrast to traditional databases which are generally controlled by an administrator, a blockchain distributed ledger provides a near real-time indelible record which is replicated among the participants involved. This allows business transactions to be more secure and transparent.  Watch this video created by the Oracle Learning Library Team (YouTube channel) to learn more about creating and managing a blockchain network with Oracle Autonomous Blockchain Cloud Service. This video gives you a detailed step-by-step walk through to create a secure and trusted production-ready blockchain network based on Hyperledger Fabric architecture.
