This is the second article in a series created to help you make the most out of your Oracle enterprise applications with the help of IBM and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). Discover how to combine business and technology skills to create new opportunities and modernize your mission critical applications from the inside out. The six articles highlight why migrating your on-premise Oracle applications to the cloud is a good business strategy in the current context and how IBM can help you accelerate your transition while keeping costs low.

This article explains why you should move your PeopleSoft application on the cloud and what’s the best way to get there without adding complexity or costs.

The value of Oracle cloud for mission-critical applications

It might be early to draw conclusions, but 2020 will probably go down in history as one of the most challenging and transformational years for businesses everywhere. With the rise of cloud computing, organizations are increasingly searching for reliable strategies to modernize their on-premises enterprise resource planning (ERP) software with minimal disruption and costs.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) includes robust compute, storage and networking capabilities.  It features a set of platform cloud tools and services (including integration, containers, microservices, blockchain, and support for AI and IoT deployments) that are optimized for all Oracle software.

How PeopleSoft ERP is better on OCI

Each on-premises PeopleSoft implementation is unique, yet they have a lot in common when it comes to routine patching, enhancing, extending and integrating applications. Maintenance tasks like backup and restore, refresh, and migration are often plagued with inconsistencies, lack of automation and more.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure enables PeopleSoft customers to automate routine activities while reducing administrative overheads, improving response times and reducing manual errors with on-demand capacity and performance.

Many PeopleSoft customers have shifted their PeopleSoft deployments to OCI.  It’s normal for them to see performance and cost benefits immediately.  Using the PeopleSoft Cloud Manager time consuming administrative and lifecycle tasks are automated, adding even more benefit.  As a result, the adoption of OCI by PeopleSoft customers is growing rapidly.

Migrating PeopleSoft to OCI can be a strategic business move with beneficial results:

  • Organizations running PeopleSoft on Oracle cloud have 38% less estimated total cost of ownership(TCO) than running PeopleSoft on-premises and 52% less than running it on another cloud
  • Running PeopleSoft on OCI enables companies to implement with speed and agility, delivering, upgrading and updating projects with 40 to 70 percent savings.
  • Moving PeopleSoft to the cloud enables a new level of performance, backed by industry-leading service-level agreements (SLAs)
  • OCI enables organizations to automate PeopleSoft lifecycle management tasks – such as instance deployment, cloning, tool patching and upgrade, monitoring, backup and much more.
  • Moving PeopleSoft in the cloud can help organizations keep application data secure at rest and in motion and enhance the availability, control and overall security of their infrastructure.

Moving to the cloud is a big decision and needs a well thought out business case. This flyer investigates what the journey to the cloud could look like and lists the scope and receivables from an assessment: Cloud Impact Assessment for Oracle IaaS & PaaS.

How IBM can help optimize your Oracle investment

IBM Services helps you operate mission critical applications like PeopleSoft with confidence and certainty. It delivers a combination of business and technology skills to help organizations modernize, run and manage mission-critical applications on OCI in a security-rich environment.

With IBM Services, it’s possible to migrate faster to production-readiness using IBM automation for all Oracle ERP systems. The reduction of manual tasks can contribute to a dramatic increase in efficiency. IBM leverages powerful built-in security services to help mitigate data safety concerns. Complexity is addressed with a single, unified service portal for all Oracle needs. Organizations can transform and scale solutions to fit their individual business needs with the IBM integrated innovation platform.

Customized solutions for complex business needs

A leading equipment and service provider for the electric utility, telecommunications, contractor, lights and signs, and tree-care markets, has a legacy system that includes installations for Oracle E-business Suite (EBS), PeopleSoft and Art Technology Group (ATG). The system is hosted on various servers, in the cloud and on-premises.

The company needed a solution that could address performance issues with both Oracle Advanced Supply Chain Planning (ASCP) and EBS, as well as address the lack of flexibility in the existing infrastructure to respond to its changing business needs.

IBM Services provided a proof of concept (POC), using Oracle Database Exadata Cloud Service, to prove that the client could achieve the required performance improvements. After a successful POC, IBM responded and teamed with Oracle to deliver an end-to-end solution that addressed the client’s performance needs and included the service continuity and expertise required for this complex environment. IBM is migrating the client’s EBS and PeopleSoft environments from an Oracle SuperCluster in a proprietary data center to OCI Exadata Cloud Service. It’s also migrating the ATG Web Commerce environment from Oracle’s hosting facility to the same OCI platform, and delivering operating system, database and application management for all three Oracle applications.

What will all the previously mentioned actions do for the client? It means that the client will be able to:

  • Cut supply chain run time each night in half.
  • Realize performance improvements for biweekly payroll.
  • Streamline interactions and transactions with a single provider and agreement accountable for all Oracle applications and infrastructure.

IBM specializes in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. At the same time, IBM leverages a wide array of experience and depth of knowledge that can help organizations at each stage of their Oracle investment, from consulting to implementation and management.
