A few months ago, we published a blog announcing the availability of WEKA on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). We ran a Flexible IO (FIO) benchmark performance test on a 373-node cluster and achieved 2-TB-per-second throughput for large-block (1-MB) IO and 17.4 million IOPS for small blocks (4 KB). For more details, see WEKA on OCI delivers 2 terabytes per second performance.

In this blog, we discuss how OCI is a clear leader in cost-performance for high-performance file systems in the public cloud based on IO500 benchmarks results published during International Super Computing 2022 (ISC22).

OCI leading the pack

The IO500 benchmark developed by the community is an IO benchmark suite that covers many different IO patterns and computes a single score for comparison, called the IO500 score. A new ranked list is published during Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions at SC and ISC conferences.

During ISC22, a new IO500 list of the fastest file systems was published, and it includes submissions from supercomputing and research labs, on-premises, and public cloud deployments. For comparison, we considered major cloud providers with services worldwide and providers with IO500 score like OCI or higher. WEKA on Amazon Web Services (AWS) used i3en.24xlarge for file servers and c5.24xlarge and c5.18xlarge for client nodes on AWS. WEKA on OCI used BM.Optimized3.36 Compute shape for file servers and client nodes.

Among public cloud submissions, the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cost of cutting-edge WEKA file system on OCI was 75% lower per unit of performance, as measured by the IO500 score, than on AWS, making them a clear leader in cost-performance for high-performance file systems in the public cloud.
