In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CIOs and CTOs have been the changemakers of their organizations, wearing more hats and taking on more responsibility than ever before. This new normal has demanded that they focus on employees, security, and budgets while still maintaining business continuity. The need for social distancing and working remotely has presented challenges when it comes to migrating workloads; and having the right cloud infrastructure that is adaptable to your needs can make all the difference.

In this series, titled “Designed for Change”, we’ll highlight the ways in which IT leaders have pivoted to make their business succeed and grow in this new, constantly changing world.

The post pandemic world will likely be very different, and no two industries or geographies will look alike. This will be a time where bold innovation and change will make all the difference. Every industry is adapting and reshaping their operations. And the pandemic has only accelerated the need for cloud innovations like AI and ML as a way to evolve for what’s next.

Organizations are thinking about the long-term effect the pandemic will have on their industry, and the best way to use technology at scale.

New trends are emerging across industries, such as:

  • Omni-channel services are on the rise as buying patterns shift for consumer goods, with the need for delivery, chat, and virtual services. Leveraging AI-powered algorithms can sift through terabytes of data to produce insights in minutes rather than weeks
  • Digital communications and virtualization of patient healthcare due to stay-at-home orders have become increasingly important. The implementation of AI to modernize healthcare systems provides a more agile approach to analyzing data and assessing health issues.
  • Supply chains are seeing a dramatic rise in demand disrupting order fulfillment while also enabling new technology to emerge for end-to-end visibility across the supply chain model.
  • The seamless digitization and automation of finance processes are key to helping operationalize these new business models.

Many IT leaders are now at the center of the conversation for how to refine business processes and redefine the future of how work gets done. There’s a new expectation to rapidly advance an organization to meet all of the new industry changes.

Today’s leaders are expected to take on strategic initiatives, such as:

  • Making Change – IT has been rethinking their next steps, both short- and long-term. They not only want to make an impact on their business, but also set an industry standard for operating their entire IT organization—all while tracking progress closely. Transforming applications that have been traditionally left behind on-premises is an important step in becoming that change maker. Whether it’s new levels of automation, performance tuning, scaling, or security – it’s possible for a IT leader to be that driver of change across an entire organization
  • Cultivating Innovation – IT has always been focused on driving innovation—and that’s no different during a global pandemic. As organizations look for more stability, data has been a lifeline. Sr. IT leaders can create an ecosystem of innovation with new technologies that increase speed, as well as new ways to answer problems
  • Building Resiliency – IT has been dealing with change that’s happening by the minute, rather than by the week or month. This includes new ways of engaging with customers, dealing with different work behaviors, and stabilizing core infrastructure to handle remote work. IT leaders have to take a hard look at where they can optimize business processes, expedite collaboration, and ensure data accuracy.

Transforming your business for what’s next

As organizations are finding new ways to transform the way they approach business, the cloud remains a key necessity in helping drive new “digital-first” strategies. The ever-growing need for remote working and social distancing has placed priority on making products and services available to anyone anywhere - making the increased capacity with cloud-based solutions so critical. And while there are many cloud providers to turn to, it can be difficult to find one with the right combination of robust hardware, automation, and support needed for moving on-premises workloads to cloud.

A common issue for many IT departments is maintaining a now decade-old cloud technology, where performance, security, and migration options were often afterthoughts. These initial clouds were mainly built for two types of customers: those building new businesses on a cloud-native foundation and those shifting non-essential workloads from on-premises. But maintaining this aging infrastructure not only costs money, it also takes away valuable personnel from important projects.

The cloud has become the default that runs nearly every new enterprise software application, while also being the first choice for production workloads. Rising critical demands have compelled the creation of a next-generation cloud, built and optimized specifically for enterprises that need to run their most demanding workloads predictably and securely. The use of a second-generation cloud and a digital-first strategy enables enterprises to focus on managing their business rather than their IT infrastructure. It brings the benefits of automation, intelligence, and massive scalability to ensure high levels of reliability, security, and operational efficiency. Coupled together, these traits unlock expansive business opportunities for innovation and change.

As companies seek stability in face of the global crisis, the cloud serves as a lifeline.

Cloud computing is creating an ecosystem of innovation with new technologies that increase speed and provide new ways to answer problems. As a result, it’s creating an entirely new class of enterprises that are based on innovative uses of data and creative solutions at scale.

The right cloud can make all the difference – one that works hard and adapts as quickly as you do. Oracle provides the only cloud platform that delivers the agility, scalability, security, and performance required for businesses to continually innovate and transform.
