Applications and use cases continue to evolve around data and enhanced storage needs in the cloud. Organizations building their own infrastructure and storage solutions to address the variable demands of their applications is more expensive and complex. Oracle makes storage seamless, inexpensive, high-performing, and flexible to support a wide range of use cases without sacrificing enterprise capabilities.

We believe that simplifying complicated processes around data is achievable and worthwhile. Legacy data storage platforms often obstruct use cases, such as reporting and analytics, and no one-size-fits-all storage solution exists. Oracle has built multiple storage options in the cloud to address any application. As Executive Vice President, Clay Magouyrk described in his post, applications across many industries require low-latency data processing and analytics or data collection and migration of large sets data.

So, we have enabled you to effortlessly store, monitor, analyze, and manage your data hassle-free in Oracle Cloud. In this post, I provide an update on our recent and future improvements to our storage offering.

Reduce storage costs

As data collection grows, storage costs increase in importance. The recent release of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Object Storage Infrequent Access tier enables you to store objects at a lower cost than the standard tier while these objects remain available for immediate access. Now the cost of storing backups as objects is cut in half without impacting your recovery time objective (RTO), so you don’t have to make any compromises. Today, we also released Object Storage auto-tiering, enabling you to automatically move rarely accessed objects from the standard to infrequent access tier.

Block Storage behaves similarly by auto-tuning detached block volumes to the low-cost setting. When the volumes are reattached, the performance for the volume is automatically restored to its previous setting to deliver needed performance seamlessly.

Finally, with the introduction of File Storage Service clones, you can turn any read-only snapshot into an independent live filesystem instantaneously and access it immediately. This process saves you not only time but also capacity, because creating a clone doesn’t replicate or move any data from the parent filesystem to its descendant clones. Instead, the clone references the parent filesystem for any data that they both share, which mean you pay for less capacity. Clone capabilities in our storage services significantly expedite test and developer use cases by enabling the creation of copies instantaneously whether it’s a filesystem or a block volume. No other cloud provides this feature, leaving their customers with tedious manual operations to duplicate volumes or copy over file by file to create a copy, which isn’t cheap to their operations.

Higher performance for flexible infrastructure

Oracle continues to innovate by offering unmatched performance. With the introduction of ultra-high performance (UHP), OCI Block Volumes provide up to 300,000 IOPS per volume, while retaining the flexibility of current block volumes, which you can reconfigure for performance and cost at any time while they’re attached or in-use without any impact to active workloads using these volumes. We’re proud to bring the experience and performance that our customers expect from us for their enterprise applications.

Business continuity and disaster recovery

Block Volumes recently introduced cross-region replication to help with business continuity and data protection in an event of disaster recovery. Block storage failover satisfies recovery point objective (RPO) for as low as 60 minutes and RTO that only takes few minutes to complete.

Current features such as policy-based volume group backup further simplify recovery after disasters. Built-in automation for backup volume groups provides crash-consistent backups across all the volumes in a group. Optionally, you can also configure your backup policy to copy those volume groups to another region for seamless data mobility.

Object Storage Infrequent Access Tier by Object Storage also contributes to disaster recovery because accessing objects is immediate, to help satisfy your recovery objectives.

How our customers are optimizing their storage costs

The complexity of enterprise applications demands expensive care and attention. Managing the thing that was supposed to simplify managing your data becomes a chore itself. We’ve seen our enterprise customers on-premises spending a lot of time planning, sizing, deploying, and provisioning their storage to get a new application up and running. But our customers who run their enterprise applications such as Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, and Siebel on OCI can easily rely on native storage offering that’s modern and simple to use.

Patching and maintaining Oracle E-Business Suite environments, for example, benefits significantly from clones. The time to create these copies is drastically reduced, giving customers more time to focus on their business free of hassle than managing underlying storage that supports their operations. For example, customers can take a snapshot before applying a patch to their Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack to have a point-in-time recovery. If unexpected results occur, the snapshot can turn into a live filesystem instantaneously to go back to the previous state and resume.

Alternatively, with Block Storage, clones enable customers to create an identical copy of any block volume without the associated cost and hassle, often linked to the backup and restore process. We know that backup-based solutions involve the cost of backups and the cost for the volumes. With direct disk-to-disk volume clone, it’s easier and cheaper for you because no backup time and unnecessary cost overhead are involved.

I often hear that managing and upgrading storage on-premises is challenging. Predicting the future based on today’s conditions is also difficult especially for e-commerce customers with highly variable demands. During seasonal events when sales spike, their site traffic can increase by 80–200%, demanding for a flexible infrastructure. But for a simple storage experience without surprising costs, sit back and enjoy the drive. Our customers benefit from the flexibility that OCI Block Storage offers with APIs by dynamically adjust for their spikes and dialing up the performance of their block volumes temporarily. Our customers only pay for the extra performance when they need it without any need for planning ahead, and they can go back to their lower level immediately to reduce their storage costs.

Thank you for letting me share our storage moment with you today. These features are just a taste of some of the exciting news coming out of this year. We’re laser-focused on you, our valuable customers, because without you on this journey, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Our roadmap to the future is exciting, and together we can build more performance and even more flexibility around storing data.
