We’re excited to announce the general availability of preference management for email announcements sent to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) tenancy administrators. In this blog post, we provide a brief overview of the announcement service, explain the details of the feature, and provide a summary of the improvements that we’re making to the service.

The Announcement service in OCI distributes information to customers of potentially instance-impacting actions that OCI performs, such as live migrations, instance restarts, or memory-preserving maintenance. We also send information about outages and informational announcements. To receive email for informational announcements, customers have to opt in. Announcements are distributed to the customers by email to the tenancy administrator email address and are accessible from the OCI Console.

As part of our service agreement, OCI contacts tenancy administrators with service status announcements through email. These emails alert customers to upcoming changes that impact their tenancy, such as those involving data centers or instances they use, or about required action on their part. Currently, Oracle sends these email announcements to the default tenancy administrator email address on record.

Console announcement

Console announcements provide a conduit to communicate timely, important information about service status. Customers can see the summary of most recent announcement for their tenancy and get detailed information about an announcement, such as description of the issue, severity, and the list of impacted resources. OCI permission management maintains access control for Console announcements. As part of this release, we’re providing the option for administrators to manage their email preference through the Console.

With this release, we’re introducing the following fine-grained choices for opting in or out of email announcements for the tenancy administrators:

  • By default, we send announcements pertaining to the customer environment and outage information for the regions or data centers, if any.

  • You can opt in to receive informational announcements, which aren’t specific to your tenancy but relate to product and service announcements.

  • You also have the option of completely opting out of receiving email announcements. We don’t recommend it, but if you make this choice, Console announcements continue to appear to ensure that we inform you of critical tenancy-impacting information.

What’s next?

We understand the current limitations of sending email announcements only to the tenancy administrator. We’re working on a public-facing feature for adding non-tenancy admins to receive tenancy-wide email announcements. To learn more about the Announcement service, see the Announcement service documentation.
