Today, we’re excited to announce the addition of metric values to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Alarm notifications, which cause the alarm threshold to breach.

The inclusion of metric values gives our customers more visibility into the health of their resources. Enhanced visibility to the cloud infrastructure's performance means that you can proactively address issues before they become critical. You can now use the metric values in Alarm notifications to determine if an alarm warrants urgent attention. For example, a Site Reliability Engineer may treat an Alarm configured to trigger at 70% CPU utilization as a lower priority when the CPU utilization metric is 71% versus when it is 95%.

Introducing metric values in Notifications

As part of the change, the alarm notification includes a new section called “Metric values.” Under this section, the metric values of the resources and the query are displayed from the time of alarm evaluations. For monitoring query language (MQL) with multiple joins, each subquery with its respective value is listed, providing more insights on what caused the alarm to fire.

The metric value is part of the three different message formats—formatted messages, pretty JSON, and raw messages—and is available in all notification destinations, except SMS.

When notifications are grouped using the “Group notifications across metric streams” option, the message lists all the metric values in order of metric stream by dimension. For example, the first metric value corresponds to the first dimension. The following example is from an email message.

When notifications are split using the “Split notifications per metric stream” option, the message lists a single metric value, corresponding to the single metric stream by dimension. The following example is from an email message.

Getting started

This feature is now available in all commercial regions. The alarm notification automatically contains the new metric value section added to notifications triggered by existing and new alarms without requiring any further action from our customers.
