A Year into the Oracle Cloud and Azure Interconnect Journey, Empowering Customers with an Enterprise Multicloud Offering

Last year, Oracle and Microsoft announced a first-of-its-kind partnership to provide a unified enterprise cloud experience by connecting Azure and Oracle Cloud. For the first time, customers could migrate and run mission-critical enterprise workloads across their Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud environments. Using a dedicated low-latency connection with an identity federation between Azure and Oracle Cloud, customers can now initiate migrations of on-premises Oracle and Microsoft workloads to cloud native solutions with millisecond latencies and without compromise.

Today, Oracle is pleased to announce the launch of our sixth interconnected region, Oracle Cloud Infrastruture US West (San Jose) to Azure US West.

This new region joins the previously available interconnect regions: Oracle Cloud Ashburn (North America) to Azure US East, Oracle Cloud UK South (London) to Azure UK South, Oracle Cloud Canada Southeast (Toronto) to Azure Canada Central, and Oracle Cloud Europe Netherlands Northwest (Amsterdam) to Azure West Europe, and Oracle Cloud Japan East (Tokyo) to Azure Japan East.

A New Region for Disaster Recovery

The addition of a second in-country region for US-based customers enables them to implement a disaster recovery plan fulfilling in-region data sovereignty and compliance requirements. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure was designed to include several building blocks to plan disaster recovery for customer applications. With the addition of the US West (San Jose) region, customers can choose a plan to recover quickly from disasters and continue to provide services to their users.

The Oracle and Microsoft partnership provides customers the ability to deploy in a true multicloud environment, which is usually a reflection of their on-premises data center topology. The partnership also offers the following benefits:

  • Flexibility and ability to accelerate cloud migration of applications that span technology stacks.

  • Ability to choose the best of both Oracle and Microsoft technologies.

  • Ability to capitalize on existing investments, without compromise, and unlock the potential of their distributed data estate.

The partnership gives customers a one-stop shop for all the cloud services that they need to run their entire business. The Oracle Cloud-Azure interconnect offers dedicated, consistent, secure network connectivity between the two clouds, while continuing to provide enterprise-level customer service and support. The interconnect provides interoperability for customers running Oracle software on Oracle Cloud connected to Microsoft software on Azure. Customers can now move to the cloud faster, without the need to rearchitect applications, reskill workforce, or replace IT best practices. Also, customers have access to innovative multicloud solutions, such as Autonomous Database in the Oracle Cloud connected to Azure cloud services, secured through enterprise identity management.

Use Case: SOHO Media Solutions

ISV SOHO Media Solutions has been a partner of Oracle for more than two decades. Headquartered in Luxembourg, they are the leader in real-time sports data publishing solutions, helping partners monetize their platforms, engaging their users, and saving valuable resources. The heart of their business is proprietary software enabling data collection from various providers ingested into a common database and exported for print production and digital publishing platforms. Originally SOHO Media ran their solution on the Oracle Database Appliance, hosted in two Luxembourg data centers, until realizing this setup limited their geographic reach and meant they weren’t seeing the innovation they were looking for from their hosting partners.

SOHO Media decided to migrate their Oracle Databases to the Oracle Cloud London region and take advantage of the Interconnect to run their multi-cloud solution. SOHO Media runs Azure Front Door and a Kubernetes Cluster on Azure UK South connected over the Interconnect to the OCI UK South (London) primary RAC database on Database Cloud Service (DBCS). The same Kubernetes cluster runs in Azure  West Europe (Amsterdam) connected over the Interconnect to the standby database on DBCS in OCI Netherlands Northwest (Amsterdam). Oracle Data Guard provides real-time data protection and availability by eliminating single points of failure between the two remotely peered VCN regions with the Fast-Start Failover (FSFO) Observer running in OCI Frankfurt.  Since its beginning, SOHO Media has prioritized delivering right on time. If late in sports data publishing, it impacts Soho Media’s customers print and deployment schedules. In the event of an outage, the solution is configured to automatically failover within 30 seconds, bringing up the Kubernetes cluster in Azure West Europe (Amsterdam) and the Database RAC cluster on DBCS in OCI Amsterdam.

Since migrating to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, SOHO Media's global platform has 100% uptime and uses an array of monitoring tools to monitor across OCI and Azure. The net result is SOHO Media have combined the wide technology choice both vendors bring to implement a highly performant, fully secure, agile and redundant .NET solution using an Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture RAC Database backend on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

“We sometimes receive messages with maintenance scheduled in the Oracle Cloud system. We have never seen failure as everything is redundant. Interconnect availability is 100%,” Guillaume Delannoy, CEO of SOHO Media Solutions.

On to the Future

We plan to add more interconnected regions for our customers to enable to the best enterprise and multicloud solutions using the Oracle Cloud-Azure interconnect.
