I need to visit a customer in Milan on Monday and Tuesday at short notice (found out at 5 pm on Friday). For a number of reasons I investigated using the sleeper train. Times worked out OK, cost was far less than plane. The seat 61 web sites gives details of the possible routes, times and how to book. I then found out that the web site won't sell me a ticket because it can't post them to me and the various agents can't sell a ticket either unless I can pick it up from London on saturday. Seems you need to plan at least 5 days ahead unless you live in London.
So I am forced to use a flight (0.224 tonnes of CO2), the air journey is 3 times the cost when you add in Hotel costs and only 4 hours shorter (I subtract the 8 hours for being asleep). Pah.
