Sun VDI 3.0 Demo Installation 2 1/2

Hi folks,

I started to go further with my demo setup and whoops, ran into the first obstacles.I have to realize that we must go through some painfull tasks.\*smile\*

There is NO WAY continuing to set up desktop providers and to configure VDI as long as we do not have installed LDAP ( or you can use AD )!
So, right now, I am downloading Sun Directory Server Enterprise Edition.

Meanwile you can check this and also download and setup the LDAP Server.

The tasks are:
The easiest ones are to check if all services are up and running and some if some parameters were set:
1. enable iscsi target SMF service
# svcadm enable svc:/system/iscsitgt:default

2. the webpage recommends to limit the ARC cache of ZFS, for example to 2 GB
set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 2147483648

3.check and - eventually - enable ssh:
bash-3.2# svcs svc:/network/ssh:default
STATE STIME FMRI
online 16:53:45 svc:/network/ssh:default

4. check your http service:
bash-3.2# svcs svc:/network/http:apache22
STATE STIME FMRI
online 16:53:49 svc:/network/http:apache22
bash-3.2#

5. check if the webservice for VirtualBox is enabled:
bash-3.2# svcs svc:/application/virtualbox/webservice:default
STATE STIME FMRI
disabled 16:53:25 svc:/application/virtualbox/webservice:default
bash-3.2#

If the service is not enabled, as in this case, enable it by using svcadm:
bash-3.2# svcadm enable svc:/application/virtualbox/webservice:default

check the state afterwards:
bash-3.2# svcs svc:/application/virtualbox/webservice:default
STATE STIME FMRI
online 17:24:02 svc:/application/virtualbox/webservice:default
bash-3.2#

and finally, we need to setup LDAP.
1. Get the Directory Server here at no cost, no kidding, as the webpage tells you:
http://www.sun.com/software/products/directory_srvr_ee/get.jsp
Select Directory Server Enterprise Edition
Select Version 6.3.1
Select Compressed Archive ( zip )
Select Solaris 10 64x86, if you use an x86 box, like me.

and download the full version of 384 MB................. and configure the Directory Server.
Installation instructions are:

cu tomorrow!

Wie kann ich ... den Sunray Service installieren und konfigurieren ???

- english version at the end -

Hallo mal wieder,

Happy Holidays and a very merry christmas!!

Claudia

This is a short installation guide for german customers which may support them, when installing and configuring Sun Ray services, especially when they are newbies.

Last week in Munich

Last week, I participated the "PTE Workshop VDA kit" in Munich initiated by my dear colleagues Thomas Assum, Thomas Spandoeck and Carsten Thalheimer. 18 participants and Sun partners came together to setup virtual desktops with VMs on an ESX 3.0.1 Server, Sun Secure Global Desktop Software and Sun Ray Software 4. This was fun!

We hastened through the cookbook: installation of the Virtual Infrastructure Software, installation of a Solaris10, a Windows 2003 Server and finally XP VM; installation and configuration of SSGD and finally setting up virtual desktops using the VDA kit.

I was really impressed how easy it ws to configure the software and to setup the components.

Now, on 11th of September 2007 Sun announced Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software 1.0 (Sun VDI).

Installed on Solaris 10 and in combination of VMWare Infrastructure 3 Software it enables you to setup virtual desktops and to consolidate them onto datacenter servers. This way users can own their  dedicated desktop evironment, customized to their needs and isolated from other users.

Virtual desktops can be cloned, copied, updated and maintained centralized. Critical data is kept in the datacenter and can be backuped and administrated by your IT Administrators easily.

Data is safe of lost and theft.

Virtual desktops replaces your traditional PCs such as Windows or Mac OS and makes the administration easier. Thin clients from Sun or other vendors can be used as well.

Organizations are able to create many desktop environments on one single Sun Fire x64 system and VMware ESX Server.
