Furniture is a family-owned business that was founded in 1961, and
headquartered in Shreveport, Louisiana. The company operates 48 stores
and sells furniture, electronics, appliances, bedding, and accessories
from 60 vendors.
Ivan Smith Furniture needed an easy-to-use reporting tool to rapidly extract information employees needed to streamline operations. For years they used SQL Reports on "green screen" character-based terminals. The application was hard to use, slow, and expensive. Employees had to spend time filling out different parameter screens before running the report, which could take several minutes. Additionally, the SQL Reports did not integrate with the company's new intranet security and data control system.
Furniture wanted to find a web-based tool that was easy to
use, affordable, and secure. It found that nothing could compare
to the total value of JEvolution from MCM Software Solutions. The
new software configuration included the Solaris OS, MySQL database
software, and the Apache Tomcat Web server. The company decided
to deploy the solution on two existing Sun servers: the Sun Fire V250
and Sun Fire X4500.
It took less than a week to implement the entire solution. The reporting system was deployed in only two days, and all the staff was trained in three. One major benefit of the new solution is that Ivan Smith Furniture can reduce its recurring licensing costs. Christa Williams, network administrator at Ivan Smith Furniture enthuses that "just by downsizing one terminal per store, our company could save $127,000 per year; and these are not just one time savings; we will save a lot every year. This means JEvolution can pay for itself many times over in the first year."
