Now available: Solaris 10 10/09 Operating System

Today we announced the availability of the Solaris 10 10/09 Operating System. In this update, Solaris 10 has been extended with new performance and power efficiency enhancements, more streamlined management of system installations, updates and fixes, new updates for ZFS and advancements to further leverage the functionality of the latest SPARC(R) and x86 based systems.

Podcast: What is new in VirtualBox 3.0?

Today we announced VirtualBox 3.0 -- a major revision to our high performance, cross-platform virtualization software. VirtualBox 3.0 introduces the capability to create and run multi-processor virtual machines that can handle heavyweight server-class workloads. It also delivers enhanced graphics support for desktop-class workloads.

VirtualBox software has been rapidly growing in popularity, surpassing 14.5 million downloads worldwide and 4 million registrations since October 2007, with in excess of 25,000 downloads a day. A mere 50 megabyte download, VirtualBox software is incredibly compact and efficient and installs in less than five minutes.

MySQL 5.4 Announcement Details...


Today we announced MySQL 5.4 at the seventh annual MySQL Conference and Expo. The new version is designed to deliver up to 90% faster response times and scalability. The InnoDB storage engine can now scale up to 16-way x86 servers and 64-way CMT servers.

Lin Lee on Education and Global Communities

Yesterday it was my pleasure to talk with Lin Lee, who is the vice president of Sun's Global Communities group. We announced the new GlassFish Tools Bundle for Eclipse at the EclipseCon conference this week. This new bundle provides Eclipse developers the same easy-to-use, out-of-the-box Java EE developer experience that NetBeans developers have already been leveraging through the GlassFish Plugin for the NetBeans IDE.

International Earth Day and Sun's CSR

We at Sun always pay close attention to the mark we make -- whether it's innovations that change the industry or our footprint on the planet.

Since formalizing our Sustainability strategy three years ago, we've had many dramatic proof points of our open source philosophy, commitment to the environment, social responsibility and making technology accessible to everyone.

Some examples include publishing our annual CSR report, winning the EPA's Climate Protection Award, and opening the new eco friendly data center in Colorado, to name a few.

We are observing International Earth Day today, and I sat down with Marcy Scott Lynn, Director of Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility at Sun Microsystems, to talk about environmental accountability for a sustainable earth.
