The Top Tip to Build a Lasting Java Career

Brandye Barrington
Sr. Program Manager

Building a Java career is simple - continue to learn.

Maybe you want something more than a new job every 3-5 years, trading up for a small salary hike and a newer chair. Maybe you want to build a Java career.

Are you looking for a career that keeps changing and growing and challenging you, a career that continues to lead you down an enriching path. As you grow and expand in this career, maybe you become known as somewhat of an expert in your field, perhaps you begin to write or teach, or mentor.

You know the statistics around the Java programming language by now. We don't need to tell you that it continues to perform well on the Tiobe index, or that it ranks high in the Stack Overflow surveys, or that there are tens of thousands of jobs asking for Java skills on Indeed.com. We also don't need to tell you that, depending on who you read Java is typically in the top 10 of programming languages, or that the salary is pretty good worldwide. Learning Java can open up many doors for a developer.

You know all this, but there is more to building a Java career than getting your foot in the door with a few foundational Java skills. Java remains popular heading into its 25th year. How do you continue to grow with Java for the next 25?

Keep your Java skills and knowledge sharp. Take Java training. Prove your Java skills and knowledge through Oracle Certification.

In an article a few years ago on Java Code Geeks, Jason Shapiro pontificated on the question "Java Certification: To Cert or Not to Cert." He provided the opinion in the article that there are two groups of developers who should pursue certification - those who are starting a career in software, and those who are looking to learn new skills, or to get an objective verification of their subject matter expertise. In my opinion, all Java Developers really fall into these two categories. If you're not a beginner developer, you should always be looking to learn new skills.

Certification facilitates and maybe even forces learning new skills. Over and over again we hear from certified individuals that the real value of certification is the learning that goes on while preparing for the exams. As a matter of fact, the recent Value of IT Certification Survey published by Pearson VUE tells that the top 3 benefits candidates reported from earning certification are:

  • Greater self-confidence in abilities (67%)
  • Knowledge has been transferrable to real work situations (55%)
  • Higher quality work output (44%)

How do you prepare for Java Certification and take advantage of these benefits? The tables below offer guidance on the training and certification exams you need.
