Brandye Barrington
Sr. Program Manager

Java SE 8 significantly changes the way you write code. Java SE 8 Certification gives you the tools to make the most of new features. The Java SE 8 Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) certification provides a foundational understanding of Java as well as programming in general.

Beta testing is now under way for the new Java SE 8 Programmer I exam (1Z1-808) at the greatly discounted rate of USD$50. Passing this exam results in the Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 8 Programmer certification.

Preparing for this certification exam introduces you to the most significantly updated version of Java yet.  Learn to use lambdas in your day-to-day programming – thus reducing your development time and allowing for greater flexibility in your programming.

While training is not required for this certification, we strongly urge you to complete the recommended training course Java SE 8 Fundamentals. This instructor-led training takes what you learn from reading the materials and teaches you to use the concepts effectively in real-world scenarios.

Visit pearsonvue.com/oracle and register for exam 1Z1-808. You can get all preparation details, including exam objectives, number of questions, time allotments, and pricing on the Oracle Certification Website.

Does this mean that there will be a new beta OCP as well? Possibly beginning next year?

  • Brandye Barrington Tuesday, October 21, 2014

Yes, the OCP will be released in beta later - probably early 2015.

  • Brandye Barrington Thursday, October 30, 2014

There will be an upgrade exam. That beta exam is the next one on the release list. I hope that it will be released before the end of the year.

I don't have a date on those beta exams. They are currently in development. Stay tuned!

    Hi Balazs,

The Java SE 8 OCA exam is out of beta and should be released in profuction in a few weeks. The Java SE 8 Upgrade exam should be released in beta soon. I'm sorry, but I don't have further information on other Java SE 8 exams.

  • Brandye Barrington Thursday, December 4, 2014

Hi, I am going to pass OCA 7 soon (only this version, not the newest one due to my company policy) but I've got a question, could I then pass OCP 8 once it will be out?

  • guest Tuesday, January 20, 2015

So I see that Java SE 8 Programmer exam (1Z1-810) is in beta.

But to qualify for this exam you must be firstly certified to Java 7??

Previously you could upgrade any version of Java Programmer cert to the new version, but now you would need to upgrade to Java 7 first and then take a second exam to go to Java 8?? Why would I do that? Why would anyone be incentivized to work for the beta exam when needing to clear previous version first?

The majority of Java Certified programmers are definately not certified at Java 7 so this really makes no sense for Oracle or the aspiring candidate.

To make this work you would need to become consistent with previous guidelines and relax the requirement for the new Java 8 SE programmer exam. Would Oracle do that?

  • Brandye Barrington Monday, January 26, 2015

We evaluate each upgarde path on its own merits, so I cannot say that for every upgrade path, there will be a path for all the previous versions to upgrade with one exam. At some point, there is simply too much of a gap.

That said, there are tentative plans to release an upgrade exam that allows Java SE 6 and below certified programmers to upgrade to 8 with a single exam.

Regarding Java SE 7 OCA and Java SE 8 OCP, you cannot go from Java SE 7 OCA to Java SE 8 OCP directly. You will first need to get Java SE 7 OCP and then upgrade to Java SE 8 OCP.

1Z1-810 (Upgrade to Java SE 8 Programmer) is for upgrade Java SE 7 OCP to Java SE 8 OCP.

Can I upgrade my Java SE 8 OCA to Java SE 8 OCP passing 1Z1-810 or I must wait another new beta exam (1Z1-809??)?

When it will be released the new exam in beta?

  • Brandye Barrington Tuesday, February 3, 2015

    Hi Ken,

We expect this exam to be released in beta in the next few months, but I don't have an estimated date yet. Stay tuned!

Regarding the 810 upgrade exam question, to go from Java SE 8 OCA to OCP, you'll need to wait for the 809 exam. The 810 exam will not get you from OCA to OCP.

I would strongly recommend going for the latest version of Java certificaiton - Java SE 8.

You can do a quick search on the Oracle Certification Fourm http://bit.ly/Lt5vhm and see a recent discussion on this topic.

Actually, it was a mistake. There was an error in the training under the Quick Links section and I fixed it and forgot to republish. It should be available now.

I have the OCA Java 7 and I am thinking now to take the OCP exam. But I see that the condition for doing the OCP Java 8 is having the OCA Java 8. What is the path to follow now if in the end I would like to have the latest version? First take the OCP 7 and then upgrade to 8? Or is there a better way to do it?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Brandye Barrington Wednesday, October 14, 2015

There is not a path to upgrade from Java 7 OCA to Java 8 OCP. You'll need to either:

    - Pass Java 7 OCP exam, 1Z0-804 and

    - Pass Java 8 OCP Upgrade exam, 1Z0-810

    - Pass Java 8 OCA exam, 1Z0-808 and

    - Pass Java 8 OCP exam, 1Z0-809

Is OCA 7 a subset of OCA 8?

meaning could I do a OCP 7 with just having the OCA 8? Would make sence to me, because the content of Java 7 is implicitly included in Java 8

  • guest Friday, November 6, 2015

OCA 7 is not a subset of OCA 8. If you have Java SE 8 OCA, you can earn Java SE 7 OCP by passing exam 1Z0-804.
