Oracle Certification To Retire "SOA Foundations" Exam (1Z0-114)

Guest Author

Effective October 1, 2010, the "SOA Foundations" exam (1Z0-114) will be retired.

Exam 1Z0-114 is a single exam required to earn the Oracle SOA Architect Certified Expert (OCE) certification. The exam will remain available for registration and testing at Pearson VUE Testing Centers through September 30, 2010.

CREDENTIAL VALIDITY

Please note that that the credential remains valid indefinitely for those holding the Oracle SOA Architect Certified Expert certification. This retirement therefore has no effect on those who complete the certification requirements before October 1, 2010.

So I'm curious, Paul, what the replacement Certification is going to be. Surely Oracle will have some type of SOA Architect certification? Something that focusses on AIA and the SOA Suite products?
    Please let me know!
    Thanks!

    Hi Paul,
What about exam retake policy for this exam. If a person attend this exam in Sept' 10 but not able to pass. So he will never be able to take that exam again, right?
    Shankar.

Right - the exam will not be available after September 30, 2010.
  • Santosh Tuesday, September 21, 2010
I'm curious to know why certifications will be retired. Could you please explain?
  • Abhi Monday, October 4, 2010
    Hi Paul,
I looked at the 451 - Oracle SOA Infrastructure Implementation Certified Expert (OCE) certification which you have mentioned above.
This one earlier coexisted along with the 114 - Oracle SOA Architect Certified Expert (OCE) certification.
While 451 was more specific to those involved in maintenance and administration of SOA architectures and 114 was leaning towards architects who define the architecture itself. So if 114 is retiring does it mean that the scope of 451 is being changed?
The description of 451 does not concur with that(yet).
    Thanks,
    Abhi

what is the the replacement of this exam
  • Brandye Barrington Thursday, October 21, 2010
    Hi Amir,
There is not a direct replacement for this certification. However, we do have another SOA certification "Oracle Service Oriented Architecture Infrastructure Implementation Specialist" http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=352.
The difference between these two certifications is that Oracle SOA Infrastructure Implementation Specialist is more focused on the Oracle SOA Suite 11g product and validates a candidate's technical skills on Oracle SOA Suite 11g, its concepts and components. Whereas Oracle SOA Architect Certified Expert focused more on the high-level SOA Concepts, Methodology and Design Patterns and Principals, rather than on a specific product.
    I hope this helps.

    Hi Abhi,
This is a good question. The scope of the 451 exam is not being changed. The retirment oft he 114 exam has no effect on the 451 exam.

    Brandye

    Hi Santosh,
Let me clarify - certifications do not retire. If a candidate holds this certification, it remains a valid certification. However, exams and certifications paths retire. Certification paths retire for many reasons. Maybe the technology is out of date or has changed drastically, a certification exam may become irrelevant in the marketplace or an exam no longer generates enough volume to support its maintenance, which means that the field is no longer interested in this path. Many factors go into making a decision to retire an exam and/or a certification path.

Hi Brnadye, Thanks for the answer. Although your comment to Santosh and Amir raises a follow up question.
"Whereas Oracle SOA Architect Certified Expert focused more on the high-level SOA Concepts, Methodology and Design Patterns and Principals, rather than on a specific product.
    "
You gave various reasons to Santosh about the decision making process of retiring a certification/path.
So is Oracle focussed only on Oracle SOA Suite specific learning paths and will not have any certification/path for the principles and coneptual learning of SOA?
If that is true then in my opinion it will be a critical gap as the conceptual learning of SOA and practical learning(on Oracle SOA Suite) complement each other and a person developing SOA components on Oracle SOA Suite without the conceptual understanding might in fact create more problems than he solves.
    Thanks and Regards
    Abhi

    Abhi,
That is a good question. While I cannot speak for Oracle's focus, and the focus of Oracle University regarding learning paths. At this time, the only certification that will be offered is on Oracle SOA Suite. However, that does not mean that training and learning paths will not be available on high-level SOA concepts, methodology and design, there is just not a certification available in that area. Students who wish to have a higher-level view of SOA should check with Oracle University to determine what training and/or learning paths are available http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=402&p_nl=ORMS.
