Java SE 8 certification upgrade exams retire tomorrow, February 28, 2020. You want to update your skills, but are not sure what to do.

Before panic sets in, take heart - we haven't left you hanging! Helping you get your Java skills and knowledge up-to-date is important to us. You may have seen that Java Developer Ranks 2nd in Glassdoor's 'Best Jobs in America' list for 2020 and we want to get you upskilled to take advantage of this boon for Java Developers!

As a Java Developer who holds a professional certification on Java SE 5 or earlier, you can upgrade your certification to the new Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 11 Developer in two easy steps.

  1. Pass exam: Java SE 11 Programmer I 1Z0-815
  2. Pass exam: Java SE 11 Programmer II 1Z0-816

If that looks suspiciously like the standard path to Java SE 11 OCP certification, it is. The uptake of Java SE 11 and modularity is underway. If your certification is on an early version of Java, you may have a little more catching up to do than just learning and practicing the newest features in Java SE 11.

Java SE 8 brought the benefits of functional programming through lambda expressions and streams. Now, Java ushers in the additional benefits of modularity. Modularity adds a higher level of aggregation above packages, with mechanisms to address reuse, reliability, maintainability, and security. Java SE 11 provides other convenient API enhancements. There has also been a recent addition of JShell which allows you to quickly run code experiments and test unfamiliar APIs.

If you want your expertise at the forefront of Java technology, you can get there by preparing for and passing these exams. The standard recommended training for these exams are the courses Java SE Programming I and Java SE Programming II.  However, you may have been working on and keeping up with the latest Java technologies as they've been released over the years. In this case, we recommend that you review the exam topics on the exam pages linked above and do a gap analysis. What skills do you feel strong in and what skills do you need to brush up on? Maybe you don't need the full training - you decide what training you need based on your current skills and experience

Other training options include a couple of Java Learning Subscription options that give you access to continuously updated digital training for 12 months as well as certification exams at no additional cost.

These learning subscriptions allow you to access the training the you need at your own pace - perfect for the experienced Java Developer wanting to upgrade to the latest technology.

So, if you were afraid that your path to a current certification was blocked, don't worry. We've got your back! Experienced Java Developers are in demand, and we want to help you meet that demand. Position yourself to take advantage of this trend by updating your skills and validating those skills with an updated certification. Let us know how we can help!
