Java Programmer Credential Questions Addressed

Hi Everyone,

Recently I have received a few specific questions from our Java certification audience that I would like to quickly address.

Question:  I earned a Java programmer credential previously from Sun, what are the next steps for me?

Answer: I encourage you to look at upgrading your Java Programmer credential to the latest version, Java SE 7. We have tried to lay out a straight-forward and convenient path for those wishing to upgrade their credential. The only requirement is that you pass exam number 1Z0-805, (Upgrade to Java SE 7 Programmer). No matter what previous version of Java programmer credential you hold, passing this single exam will allow you to upgrade to Jave SE 7 Programmer OCP. Please note that when I say convenient I do not mean that this exam is easy. Be be sure to review the objectives, study and prepare. Once you are ready you can register to take your exam through Pearson VUE

Question: I earned a Java programmer credential from Oracle (OCP level), but what do I call it? Is there a shorter name that I can use?

Answer:  The official credential names are a lot longer than is convenient to use in casual conversation. For example "Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 7 Programmer" is a real mouthful. We don't really take an official position on credential acronyms, but I've seen many folks refer to their Java programmer credential as "OCPJP" which make a lot of sense to me. This also nicely separates the Professional level from the Associate level for Java SE 7.

I hope that this helps clarify things a bit for those of you with these questions.

Please address the *real* problems concerning certification. My example: I earned the SCJP6 credential from Sun (through Prometric). And now, Pearson VUE can't retrieve my datas, so I just have the piece of paper to prove it. I phoned Pearson VUE several times, but people keep saying "OK, we'll fix it ! Wait for a week !" and nothing happens. Mailing gave the same result. And now I'd like to pass other certifications (Web Component Developer), I'd like to put the logos on my site, but I can't... So Oracle has to put some pressure on Pearson so that they fix this kind of problem !

@Onur, I would suggest that you have a look at the exam topics for the exam you will be taking. If you want Java SE 6 Programmer, you'll need to take exam 1Z0-851. You can find exam topics here There is also an SE 7 version of Java Programmer available now. You can find the details here

@Jocelyn, Pearson VUE will not have a record of exams not taken through their training centers. You can view your certification history and download logos through Oracle Certification's self-service site

Very observant, Nicholas! Paul will often write the blog posts and Harold will actually update the blog.
