Oracle Database 12c Upgrade: Answering Your Questions

Oracle Certification recently sponsored a free webinar with master instructor Gwen Lazenby on upgrading your Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional certification to Oracle Database 12c. A number of very good questions came up during this webinar that we'd like to address.

How can Oracle justify allowing people to upgrade to the 12c certification from versions prior to 11g via the same path, with a single exam? And doesn't this upgrade path diminish the value of the certification or discriminate against candidates who have worked hard to maintain certification through all prior versions?

We are always striving to not only design our certifications for technical accuracy and focus on real-world skills and knowledge, but we also continue seeking ways to make earning them as easy as possible for you. We now have a new way for candidates to 'jump' versions to 12c with a single exam. If you have upgraded in the past, you were also earning those prior version certifications (i.e. DBA OCP 10g, DBA OCP 11g, DBA OCP 12c), whereas the single exam upgrade option only awards the 12c credential (i.e. does NOT also earn the previous-version credentials).

What is the process to upgrade to Oracle Database 12c Administrator Certified Professional from a version earlier than 11g? Do I have to upgrade to 10g or 11g first and then upgrade to 12c?

This is a single exam upgrade path. If you hold an Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional certification on any version (Oracle7.3, Oracle8, Oracle8i, Oracle9i, Oracle Database 10g or Oracle Database 11g), you can upgrade to Oracle Database 12c Administrator Certified Professional by passing a single exam - Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c (1Z0-060).

Is training required to upgrade?

If you hold an Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional certification, training is not required to upgrade to Oracle Database 12c Administrator Certified Professional. Simply pass the exam Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c (1Z0-060). You have already met the prior certification requirement with your current Oracle Database Admin Certified Professional credential.

Can you still upgrade to versions other than 12c? For example, can we upgrade from 9i to 10g, or from 8i to 9i?

For now, you can still upgrade to any version for which there is still an upgrade path. For example, 7.3, 8 and 8i certified professionals can still upgrade to Oracle9i Database Administrator Certified Professional. Oracle 9i Database and Oracle Database 10g Certified Professionals can still upgrade to Oracle Database 11g. The 12c upgrade path simply streamlines the upgrade process for candidates certified on very old versions of the Oracle Database.

I missed the Oracle Database 12c Upgrade webinar, or missed parts of it. Will it be made available for replay?

The Oracle Database 12c Upgrade webinar with Gwen Lanzenby that was originally held on March 17, 2014 is now available for replay.

When I did 11g OCP, if I remember correctly I didn't encounter RealApplicationTesting and VLDB...There is a whole guide for VLDB. Do I need to revisit all of those?

You can see the list of exam topics on the Oracle Certification website. This is the best source for what is covered on the exam.

If I fail one section of the exam, will I need to take the whole exam again, or can I just retake the failed section?

Though there are 2 sections to pass, the exam is a single entity. You will either pass the exam or not. If you fail the exam, you will need to retake the entire exam.

Will I need to pay full price for my 2nd exam attempt should I fail the first attempt?

Each exam attempt costs the same.

If I fail the exam, how soon can I retake it?

Candidates must wait 14 days to retake a failed exam. You can view the full retake policy on the Oracle Certification website.

Are the questions multiple choice?

Exam questions on this exam are multiple choice.

Are there questions with multiple answers?

Answers to the multiple choice questions may take the form of 'choose one,' 'choose two,' 'choose all that apply,' or some other form of single or multiple answers.

Are there unscored questions on the Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c exam 1Z0-060?

It is a typical practice to include unscored items in a production exam. Including unscored items allows us to test new items without sending an exam back through a beta process. With this process we can seamlessly revise and update our exams without an inconvenience to candidates.

Are the Key DBA Skills version-specific, or would they be the same across versions?

The goal is to test skills that are relevant regardless of database version but we can't guarantee that all questions/answers in that section are version-agnostic; candidates should be prepared to demonstrate their key DBA skills in the context of the 12c product.

Are the Key DBA Skills topics on the 1Z0-060 exam covered in the New Features training?

Key DBA Skills are not covered in the New Features training, but they are covered in the Certification Exam Prep Seminar: Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c for exam 1Z0-060.

Will there be a practice test available for this upgrade exam?

Kaplan SelfTest has released an Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c Administrator 1Z0-060 practice test

What other preparation materials are available?

There is a very good blog post that has been released by the Oracle Certification team on upgrading to Oracle Database 12c.

What is the difference between SelfTest Software and Transcender?

The Oracle Authorized practice exams from Kaplan IT Learning (Kaplan SelfTest and Transcender) are variants of the same product and exam candidates should purchase only one. The products share some of the same content but are targeted toward different segments of Oracle certification candidates.

Transcender practice exams are meant to cover all the information a candidate needs to know to become certified. There are more practice questions and the Transcender test engine offers multiple preset exams that prepare the candidate for the live exam.

Kaplan SelfTest practice exams have the same quality content, but contain fewer practice questions and offer one certification-mode practice test. This is because not everyone who aspires to Oracle certification is new to the technology and experienced technologists may wish to review only specific topics in preparation for the exam.

What books are available to prepare?

Oracle Press does have an OCP Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-060).  You can also get book recommendations on our Oracle Certification Forum

Are there any free training courses?

There are no free Oracle University training courses to prepare for this exam.

Do you have to pay for an Oracle class or can you just study on your own?

Since training is not required for this certification upgrade, you can study on your own without attending a class. However, the Oracle Database 12c: New Features for Administrators course would be very beneficial in helping to prepare for this exam.

How can I search existing courses by location?

You can find training locations on the Oracle University website.

Does self study material cover both exam sections?

There are self-study resources that will cover both exam sections. The Oracle Database 12c: New Features for Administrators course is available as Training On Demand (TOD) or as a Self-Study Course (SSC). This New Features course covers only the new features section of the exam. The Certification Exam Prep Seminar: Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c (1Z0-060) covers the key database topics for this exam.

How much is the upgrade exam?

You can find the cost of the exam in your region by accessing the exam page.

Do you have any discounts available for exam fee only?

There are several ways that candidates can get discounts on exams:

Certification Value Packages - If you are planning to take an Oracle University course as part of a certification path that contains a training requirement, a Certification Value Package may be a good option. The value package includes the course fee, a certification exam voucher and exam preparation material such as practice test or exam prep seminar where these items are available. When purchased in a package, candidates can receive up to 20% off these items.

Exam Prep Value Packages - A valuable asset to helping you prepare for your certification exam, exam prep value packages include the exam prep seminar, a certification exam voucher and exam preparation material such as practice test or exam prep seminar where these items are available. When purchased in a package, candidates can receive up to 20% off these items.

Workforce Development Program (WDP) - which allows education institutions to deliver Oracle training as part of certificate and non-degree programs offered via Continuing Education.

Oracle Academy Program - is a program specifically for students seeking a career in Oracle technologies. This program is designed to be offered through high schools, as well as technical and vocational schools.

Are there any discounts for OPN members for the 12c upgrade exam?

Please check with your program coordinator in your company.

What's the reason for the price increase for the testing?  Earlier it's $150 and now it shows $245?

Earlier in 2013, Oracle went through a process to align all Oracle Certifcation exam prices at $245. Some exam prices went up a litte and some came down. Oracle exam prices are competitive with industry standards.

Should I study for and take the Oracle 11g or Oracle 12c exams ?

I got my certification for 8i in 2002 as an Application Developer but would like to do the Database Administrator exams.

Please advice.

This is a decision that you have to make based on your interest, current training and skills and the available opportunities in your area. While we always recommend the latest certification, the companies in your area may not have upgraded to 12c yet. It will take some research on your part. One option would be to do both - obtain 11g and then upgrade to 12c. Even if the company you work for does not yet have 12c, having the 12c certification can help you guide your company on when and whether to upgrade to 12c.

This is probably not the type of answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps.

Using IE 11 or Google Chrome cannot bring up most of the training course description pages - error is:

I would like to look at the available training resources for upgrade to 12c DBA

It was a very good discussion just needed to find out though is can i writ even if i had just the 11g OCA?

Posted by guest on October 30, 2014 at 09:49 AM PDT #

Wally, I'm really not sure what the issue is there. Maybe you should contact Oracle University Sorry I can't be more helpful on this.

@Guest, If you have 11g OCA, you should have a look at this information You will not take the 060 exam. You will take the 067 exam and a relevant 12c training course.

I strongly discourage everybody to buy the Oracle Press book by Sam Alapati.
The quality of the 11g book was poor but this book should never have been printed.
There are so many mistakes in the book regarding pl/sql packages and code examples.

I am Oracle Certified Professional (Admin) for Oracle 10g. Could I take the upgrade exam for 12c directly? Or should I first get certified for 11g?

Kindly reply at the earliest.

I don't have any cerfication from oracle before can I just jump straight to oracle 12c by the way done training on oracle 11g but have not written exam before. Please what your advice

Posted by guest on January 19, 2015 at 10:17 AM PST #

You can start with 12c however, when you get ready to move to the OCP certification, you will need to take 12c training. You may want to consider going for the 11g certification and then upgrading to 12c if it is an issue for you to take additional training. The 11g course will not be accepted toward the 12c training requirement.

You can take the 060 exam to upgrade directly to 12c.

I have sat for the 12c 1Z0-060 twice!! Let me share my preparations: 1) took "12c New Features for Administrator" and studied material front to back numerous hours. 2) I bought Oracle recommend KAPLAN test package (passed it over & over)-don't waste your money, questions are nothing like the exam!! Filing for refund! 3) Went to Amazon and bought 4 VERY popular 1ZO-060 EXAM PREP BOOKS and READ THEM COVER TO COVER! 4) Sat for exam in December failed - waited a month studied and tested daily all practice exams pointed out I WAS READY PASSED 96-100% every time on all topics!! Restudied all the aforementioned materials another month. 6) Sat for the exam again today! Passed 1 section failed the other!! Thus a big fail again!! I studied all suggested materials, took $3000 course recommended by Oracle, Kaplan practice tests recommended by Oracle 99.00, 169.00 in all the top Oracle Press books from Amazon!! Which I will be rating poorly.

I AM HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED that Oracle does NOT provide ACCURATE study guides, and exam questions.

YES, I am an active dba in the field for many years. My certs back to 10G, practicing in 11g, which I might add they are expiring although I still am paying on loans for Oracles recommended courses to obtain prior certs. I've legitimately pursued, Raised an SR and they give me formatted responses!!

I got a respectable GPA in College 3.9. So, am I missing something?? Where's that 1 resource that will ACCURATELY AND ASSURADLY prepare me to pass this exam!!??? Having to pour over volumes of BROAD information and topics is guaranteed the student will fail, especially with different test material each time you sit for it and who studies for a continually moving target?

Good thing I'm tenacious. Any suggestions?? Thank you

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. Maybe you could discuss on the Oracle Certification Forum and get suggestions/recommendations from other test takers.

I would NOT recommend Kaplan SelfTesT practice test for the Oracle 12c Upgrade Exam (1Z0-060). After studing with Self test prep and oracle press materials, I passed the self test with 90% - 100% and I still failed the exam badly.

Do you have any statistics on what percentage of candidates pass the Oracle 12c Upgrade exam on the first attempt or on the second attempt?

Posted by Suzanne on June 04, 2015 at 02:51 PM PDT #

We are not able to release those statistics. I think that sometimes the practice tests are deceptive if you take the test more than once. The practice test is just one tool in your tool belt for exam preparation.

If you take the test more than once, you tend to know what's coming.

The practice test is also meant to be indicative of they types and difficulty of exam items. It is to help you identify knowledge gaps. I'm sorry you did not have a good experience with your practice test and exam.

To echo the comments of previous responders. I too bought numerous books and paid for the Kaplan 1Z0-060. DO NOT WASTE your time. The Kaplan guide is of absolute no use. I was getting very hight scores, and went into the exam with a lot of confidence - only to find it dented by the actual exam, which was way way different. This seems an Oracle and Kaplan money making vehicle. A lot of books of Amazon professing to help students prepare for the exam are also, in my opinion, not worth the money.
I bought a 12c Admin guide by a very popular author, and only one chapter, right at the very end of the book covers PDB's. There's no mention of new features of 12c either.

It seems to me that is is a money making bandwagon for all and sundry.

Migrate and re-develop your skills on another emerging platforms.

I'm sorry that you've found these materials to be lacking. I strongly encourage you to contact the vendors with specific information that can help them improve the materials.

Dont attempt for this exam. I had appeared for this exam recently (this month) with lots of preparation (material & Dumps). But, I failed in this exam. I have done my OCP and Exadata certification before. This is first time I facing such issue. I feel there is a bug in the test :). One of my friend is also failed and his opinion is also same. At least as of now I wont recommend to write this exam.
One more thing I wanted to know is there any free exam retake policy for 1z0-060?

Posted by guest on August 10, 2015 at 11:49 PM PDT #

There is no free exam retake. I'm sorry that you've had difficulty with this exam. I will, however, caution you against using dumps - this is cheating. Dumps are also notoriously poor quality and often wrong.

I hope that you'll give this exam another try. I would suggest trying out the Exam Prep Seminar

I currently hold an Oracle 10G OCP certification. I recently received an email stating that unless I act by March 2016, my certification will become inactive. Does that mean I will no longer be able to upgrade to 12C if it is not complete by March 2016?

Posted by Wendy on September 11, 2015 at 11:53 AM PDT #

Hi Wendy,
You will still be able to upgrade after that date. If you do not upgrade by March 1, 2016, you will no longer be able to access your logo or certification and you will no longer be able to verify your certification through CertView to a 3rd party. You will regain all these benefits once you upgrade.

In respect to Wendy's question above, I am in a similar situation having an OCP 7.3 and should upgrade via 1Z1-060
Before November 1st. Are you saying that regardless of that date, it is possible to (re)take the exam even after that date?

I intend to do it before the end of October, but in case i fail the first attempt,'does it mean I can retake it even after the 1st of November??

Thanks, kind regards

Posted by Zarko on October 09, 2015 at 11:56 PM PDT #

Hi Zarko,
Yes, you can take the exam after November 1.

I have similar situation.I planned to upgrade from ocp 9i to 11g. But our center they are not operating until monday 2nd nov. Am i be able to upgrade after 1st nov the same exams or should i start all 4 exams again?

Posted by guest on October 30, 2015 at 05:22 AM PDT #

You are still able to upgrade after Nov 1 by passing only the single upgrade exam. However, on Nov 2, your 9i certification will show up as 'Inactive.' It will be reactivated once you upgrade.

If I am unable to take the test before March 1 2016, will my previous certification expire? and I have to take tests from scratch i.e. SQL,Admin 1, Admin 2?
Currently I am 10g OCP.

Posted by hamza on February 04, 2016 at 10:23 AM PST #

If you do not upgrade your certification by March 1 2016, your 10g OCP will become inactive. This means that you'll no longer have access to your eCertificate and logo in CertView and you won't be able to verify your credential to a third party. Once you upgrade, you'll regain access to those benefits.

I had cleared 4 out of 5 tests for 8i OCP, due to timing constraints i could not finish 5th one. At some point i also attended 9i new features course. what can i do now to get 12c ocp with minimum exams/courses?

e.g. take 12c one upgrade exam + one more ?

Posted by Mehul on April 24, 2016 at 08:13 AM PDT #

Did you earn the 9i OCA certification? If so, you can upgrade to 12c DBA OCP by passing exam 067 and completing a 12c Database training course.

If you did not earn 9i OCA, you'll need to start with 12c DBA OCA. You've likely passed the SQL exam requirement in the 12c OCA path if you passed exam 001 or 007.

Brandye, I did not get 8-ocp ( i passed 4, and for 5th one i did not get time to take. The one i did not take was sql)

Are you saying i have to start all over again for 12c?

Posted by Mehul on May 05, 2016 at 12:03 PM PDT #

I'm sorry, but yes. You'll need to start over again with 12c.
