NEW CERTIFICATION: Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Oracle Solaris 11 System Administrator

Oracle Certification announces the release of the new "Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Solaris 11 System Administrator" certification. This certification is for experienced Oracle Solaris system administrators with a solid understanding of the UNIX operating system, commands, and utilities and are proficient in key operations such as configuring network interfaces, managing swap configurations, crash dumps, and core files.

Existing Oracle Solaris Professional-level (OCP, SCSA) certification holders (any version) can now upgrade their credentials to Oracle Solaris 11 with a single exam. The "Upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 System Administrator" exam (1Z0-820) is currently in beta and thus is available at the greatly discounted rate of $50 USD. Exam appointments are available now to take the "Upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 System Administrator" exam at Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide. Visit pearsonvue.com/oracle and register for exam 1Z0-820.

We will soon be releasing exam 1Z0-822 (Oracle Solaris 11 Advanced System Administration) for new/initial OCP certification candidates and will post updates here on the Oracle Certification Blog.

You can get all preparation details on the Oracle Certification website, including exam objectives, number of questions, time allotments, and pricing.

I took this Solaris 11 Upgrade beta exam today. It was the most tricky and difficult certificate exam among what I've taken so far, including any other beta exams I took and passed/failed.

Neither I prepared much for this exam nor used Solaris 11 heavily but am a seasoned Solaris admin for a long time.

It was long and difficult (164 questions for 3.5 hrs), and the questions were describing very detailed situations and asking what you need to do. I guess 70+% of the questions were asking to choose 2 or more answers, many of which for 3-4 and some for even 5-7 answers! Running out of time, I guessed many of them. I don't expect that I get a passing score on this and I will aim at passing the official exam when it's available. Regardless, Solaris 11 Upgrade Exam coverage seems to be a lot more advanced than Solaris 10 or prior certification exams.

Posted by guest on January 28, 2012 at 12:03 AM PST #

There are a couple of comments I'd like to make here. First is to take heart. You may not have done as poorly as you think on this exam. Beta exams are tricky because they contain SO MANY questions and none of these questions have been vetted with the public yet, so we may discover that some of them are not very good questions. Remember though, that you are only grade on the questions that are selected for the production exam.

If, by chance, you did not pass the beta exam, you have a much better chance of passing the production exam. You've see the types of questions asked on the exam and have time to better prepare yourself for a retake. Hopefully that won't be necessary!

The 2nd comment I'd like to make is that your comments are better testament than any announcements we've made about "raising the bar" on these exams. We have been communicating that we've really revamped these 11 exams, raising the level and also raising the value of the certification. Your testimony on this exam really lets other candidates know that there is truth to what we're saying.

I do hope that you find you've passed the beta when beta scores are released. Thank you for your comments.

I need complete information about OCP.

Posted by Adnan Jamshed Siddiqui on March 24, 2012 at 02:50 AM PDT #

How can I become an OCP or OCM in Oracle Primavera?

Posted by guest on March 27, 2012 at 10:19 AM PDT #

@Adnan, In the blog post above, if you'll click on "Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Solaris 11 System Administrator (OCP)" under "Quick Links," you will be taken to a page that will give you the OCP information for this certification.

@Guest, there are no OCA or OCP certifications in Primavara. You can go to this page http://bit.ly/He4OVI and select "Applications" under #2, and "Primavera" under #3 and you will see the Primavera certifications available.

Thanks,
Brandye

Is the "Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Solaris 11 System Administrator" available for online test? Or, do I have to go to a test center?

Thanks.

Posted by Teck on April 04, 2012 at 09:19 AM PDT #

Hi Teck,
This exam is not available online. You must take it at a test center. Typically, very few exams are available online. And it is usually only exams that are the very first step in a multi-exam path that are available online.

(I posted above and am the one who didn't pass the Solaris 11 Upgrade Beta Exam. I'm currently studying Solaris 11 to challenge the regular version of the Upgrade exam in couple of months.)

I'd like to request that Oracle Corporation maintains confidentiality of the certification exam questions.

Some Web sites on the Internet sell certification exam questions and make the value of passing those exams useless and valueless.

I hope Oracle maintains a super strict integrity of the exam questions so that only a small number of real qualified Solaris administrators could pass such exams so that they get respect on competency from employers and in the industry.

Thanks.

Kindly provide me Authorised Institute of OCA & OCP certification in Mumbai& Pune.
If Possible provide those in terms of rating for all the Institute in Mumbai And Pune.

Posted by Shriram on April 30, 2012 at 02:21 AM PDT #

Hi Shriram,
You can find authorized training institutes in your area on the Oracle University website here http://bit.ly/dspqdH. Oracle does not rate institutes.

Regarding the issue of exam security. Exam security is extremely important to Oracle and we do all we can to protect our exams. However, despite our best efforts, there are still unscrupulous people who have taken the exam and post brain dumps on the web also people who work at the test centers who steal exam questions. Every entity to tests fights the same battle every day. It is unfortunate. This is where a training requirement comes in. Candidates who cheat on their exams cannot become certified without the training. As we say in the US also, "the proof is in the pudding." If a job candidate has cheated to obtain certification, he will eventually show his true colors when he cannot perform acceptably in his job. We continue to work to protect our exams and hope that pressure from the community will keep candidates from trying to cheat. Thank you for your honesty and concern. We want this to be the best program possible for our candidates!

Your best bet is to start with the Oracle Certification website at certification.oracle.com There are over 130 Oracle certifications to date, so you will first need to decide which path you'd like to follow and view the requirements on our website.

Posted by Brandye Barrington on May 02, 2012 at 01:14 PM PDT #

Thanks for your response and openness on the issue.

As soon as I find out that Oracle's Solaris 11 certification exam questions are available on any Internet sites, not only am I going to stop planning to take the exam for myself but also to make sure to let any and every IT administrator whom I know know of the valuelessness of taking that exam.

There can be reasons and justifications for anything but why don't you just change the training partner, if necessary after investigation, and revise the exams or take some strong action to resolve this kind of confidentiality issue? Adding a training requirement doesn't seem to me as a good way to address the original confidentiality issue. It rather appears to me that Oracle simply wants to make money out of the training requirement. Like other competent folks, I'm proud of putting my certifications by specifying that they have been passed "all by exams" on my resume. I want to avoid wasting my time and effort to pass such an easy exam that can be bought.

Posted by guest on May 25, 2012 at 03:28 PM PDT #

We do take all of the steps that you mention and others that you don't mention. The training requirement is a small piece of this and exam security is not the only reason for implementing a training requirement. Thanks for your comments.

I took upgrade certification but never received any update on that. Is the exam result announced? I never heard of it. I think that means, I didn't pass it. I think I wasted $50..

But I would love to get my score even if I am failed..

Posted by guest on July 18, 2012 at 05:46 PM PDT #

Everyone receives a score report. I thought that they were supposed to go out this week. If you do not receive by the end of the week, please contact Oracle Certification Support http://bit.ly/KMsuH3 for assistance.

Thank you Brandye,
haven't received it yet. I am expecting soon. I am not finger crossing since I am sure I am not going to pass. I felt so bad that Oracel extended the exam later once I took the test..

Anyway, I am happy that result will be available soon and will be ready to take a real test.. I hope this time I will pass.. This is going to be first time I will ever take certification 2nd time if I fail...

Hi

I have taken Solaris 11 certification exam , but I failed :(.
Can I get the second chance for re-writing the exam? or I need to pay the fee entirely and reappear.... As the exam is totally new I wish they could provide a second chance for me

Thanks & Regards
Raghav

Posted by guest on September 24, 2012 at 01:24 AM PDT #

Hi Raghav,
I'm sorry, but we do not have free retakes. The only way to get a free exam retake is to have purchased a value package that contains training, a certification exam, a free retake and a practice exam all at a discounted price.

You will need to pay for the exam again. Good luck.

Respected Sir,

I am Subhabrata Mondal, doing MCA(2nd Year). I want to know about global exam of OCA and OCP. For giving this exam, is it necessary to do the certificate course from reputed computer center?or i can give it by learning myself. If it is not possible, then suggest me about center where i can do it..

Thank You.

B4 Oracle Solaris Certification merge, you can study for Solaris with the text books for certification exams but I dont know how it is now.
Can I study for Oracle Solaris 11 system Adminstrator(OCA) on my own without going to all these Oracle Universities and boot camps.
And if yes, what materials do I need?

Subhabrata,

As I mentioned to Mankene, you do not have to complete training to take the OCA exam, but you will need to complete training in order to become an OCP. You can see the response to Snehal to see where to find training locations.

I appeared for 1Z0-820 exam around 2 months back & I failed to pass.
Extremely disappointed with following :-

- According to new Oracle policy, exam result is sent after 30 minutes of exam to registered e-mail address of candidate. Not convinced about this policy. This policy affects transparency indirectly. Candidate never knows how to result is declared.
- I am pretty confident that I was going to pass the exam as I am already working on Solaris 11.
- No material is available for upgrading certification for candidates in India region.
- I have already raised a question about 1500$ exam fee for candidates who are sitting for Oracle certificate track for 1st time from India region. It's not an affordable deal for an individual from Indian region. Training fee has to be reasonable region wise & not in US$.

I hope oracle will take above queries in consideration. Thank you for your most valuable time.

Regards,
Amey Abhyankar.

Posted by guest on March 27, 2013 at 03:31 AM PDT #

Arney,
Thank you for your feedback. Regarding delivery of the exam results, I can assure you that the exam results are exactly the same exam results that you'd receive from Pearson VUE if you received the results at the test center. There is no difference in scoring.

Regarding the exam fee, costs regionally have been taken into account.

I wish you the best of luck on your further attempts. Again, thank you for your feedback.
