New Date for Implementation of Sun Hands-On Course Requirement

As announced on the Oracle Certification website, Java Architect, Java Developer, Solaris System Administrator and Solaris Security Administrator certification tracks will include a new mandatory course attendance requirement. Because of unforeseen disaster and subsequent recovery efforts underway in Japan, Oracle has extended the start date of this new requirement to October 1, 2011. Candidates may earn their certifications using the current track requirements (found on the Oracle Certification website) through September 30, 2011.
Comments:

Does the tsunami in Japan have anything to do with the extended start date of the new mandatory course attendance requirement? I just don't get it...

Posted by guest on June 29, 2011 at 07:40 AM PDT #

Yes, Due to the tsunami in Japan, we decided to extend this requirement date. This will give Japanese candidates a little leeway in completing these paths and preparing for the training requirement.

Is Japan the only country affected? or is it a worldwide change?

It is a worldwide change.

Hi, what happens if I buy a voucher for those certification tracks now(July)? I'm supposed to be under the current track, but on the other hand It's virtually impossible to complete the submission before October, what could lead me to take the mandatory course(or not ???). I'm really confused. If so, I think Oracle should put those tracks "on standby" until October.

Posted by guest on July 05, 2011 at 12:28 AM PDT #

Your voucher purchase is separate from the training requirement. The important thing here is when you complete your certification. If you complete (and pass) all certification requirements before September 30, you will not have to complete a training requirment. If you do not complete (and pass) all certification requirements by September 30, you will be required to complete training in order to become certified.

If you fail the SCEA assignment, you must resend it and be graded BEFORE Oct. 1st to get certified without course attendance?

Posted by guest on July 05, 2011 at 01:35 PM PDT #

This is correct. This is why we recommend that you submit your assignment and complete your essay at least 5 weeks before the September 30 deadline. This will give the team 4 weeks to grade and will allow you a week to resubmit should you fail. Everyone should keep in mind that grading takes up to 4 weeks. We will probably be receiving an influx of assignments at that time too, so it will probably take the full 4 weeks to receive a grade. The earlier you can submit your assignment, the better!

I'm thinking in taking the SCEA and I haven't found answers to this questions on the FAQ. This will help me to decide to start the certification or wait.

Maybe they are easy to understand from the Oracle certification word but I don't find the answers.

Will be necessary to attend the course first or during a time limit after passing the exams with the new program in October?

Will be possible to take the course after passing the exams at any time and receive the certification if we start the current path?

If you have done the course and the time limit to pass the exams expire you keep the course or you need to do it again?

Best,
JuanMa

JuanMa,
Please see the answers to your questions below:

QUESTION: Will be necessary to attend the course first or during a time limit after passing the exams with the new program in October?
RESPONSE: Once the new training requirement is implemented on October 1, you can complete the certification steps in any order. You do not have to complete the training first. There is not a specified time limit for completing the training after passing the exam. HOWEVER, if you pass the exams on OS10 and OS11 is released and OS10 retires, you may not be able to use the OS11 training for OS10 certification. Be careful of waiting too long until the appropriate training is no longer available.

QUESTION: Will be possible to take the course after passing the exams at any time and receive the certification if we start the current path?
RESPONSE: Yes, but read the response above regarding the possibility of a retirement. That said, there are no current plans to retire OS10, and we do not yet have any information about releasing OS11 certification. You should subscribe to this blog to stay up-to-date on such announcements. At this time, retirements will probably not affect you.

QUESTION:If you have done the course and the time limit to pass the exams expire you keep the course or you need to do it again?
RESPONSE: There is no time limit to take the exams after completing the course but, as mentioned above, if you complete an OS10 course and the OS10 exams retire before you take them, the OS10 course will not count toward OS11 certification, you would need to take an OS11 course. We typically give 3 months notice for retirements, so if you subscribe to this blog, you should have plenty of notice to complete your certification path before any exams retire.

Wait a minute... if you must be RE-graded BEFORE Oct. 1st (in case you failed in your assigment) and the team need 4 weeks to grad any assignment, then you have to RE-send your assigment 5 weeks PRIOR to the deadline (by the end of Aug.)... Am I wrong?

Hi.. i have completed Solaris System admin-part 1 exam in prometric centre when it was offered by Sun Microsystems. Now i have completed Part 2 of the Solaris System admin on 1st week of June. i have not yet received my success kit. When will i receive my success kit...? Please advise!!!

Posted by guest on July 07, 2011 at 04:23 AM PDT #

If you want to ensure that you do not have to complete a training course for your certification, your certification track must be completed by October 1, 2011. Here is what this means:

- If you submit your assignment and essay and you fail, you will need to resubmit before Oct 1.
- When you send your first submission, you should submit (both assignment and essay) by August 27. This will allow 4 weeks for grading and 1 week to resubmit the assignment if you fail.
- If you fail and need to resubmit the assignment, as long as you resubmit by COB on Sept 30, if you receive your score after Oct 1 and you PASS, you will not be required to complete the training requirement.
- If you send your FIRST submission after August 27, and you receive a failing score on or after Oct 1, you will need to complete the training requirement.

Re: Solaris kit question:
1) Did you register for your Part II exam at Pearson VUE under the same ID you used at Prometric for Part I.
2) You should check your account at certview.oracle.com to ensure that both exams show up under the same account and that CertView shows you as holding this certification.
3) AFTER checking CertView, if you need assistance, or need to check the status of your kit, please contact suncert_ww@oracle.com.

Hi:

0. I've downloaded my SCEA/OCMJEA assignment last December (2010). Only a "minimum score to pass the exam" was stated in the text.

1. Do you know about any changes (from January, 2011 to July, 2011) that stated not only a "minimum score to pass the exam" but a "minimum section score" too?

Thx in advance!

can u pls tell me whether any fee to be paid to do these trainigs?

Posted by guest on July 18, 2011 at 11:26 PM PDT #

Yes, there are fees associated with the training. If you'll click on the link in the blog post that takes you to the announcement page, each training title is linked to the course description where you will be able to view the cost of the course in your local currency.

"late June to early July"
"few weeks"
"6-8 weeks"

few months ?
few years ?

Honestly, what's wrong at Oracle ?

Posted by guest on July 26, 2011 at 07:18 AM PDT #

I purchased the Assignment from Prometric, but I haven’t returned my completed project to Oracle yet. How do I upload my Assignment?

I registered into PearsonVUE and got my new account using my existing Prometric Testing ID, but the 1Z0-865 for submitting my essay is not there!!! Why not? In the meantime I'm suppossed to wait 5 working days until somebody from suncert_ww@oracle.com gives me a voucher...

Will the 1Z0-865 be activated in the moment I receive such voucher?

Thanks,
Carlos.

Posted by guest on July 28, 2011 at 04:56 PM PDT #

Carlos,
Actually, you will not purchase the 865 exam at Pearson VUE. You will obtain the voucher from suncert. Have a look at this page http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=451#3a for more specific instructions, under the question: I purchased the Assignment from Prometric, but I haven’t returned my completed project to Oracle yet. How do I upload my Assignment?.

Once you obtain the voucher from suncert, you will purchase 1Z0-848. This is a non-proctored item, so at pearsonvue.com/oracle, when you select the option to 'Schedule an Exam,' you will then select 'Non-Proctored' on the next screen. When you have completed the process of 'purchasing' this assignment, you will be on a screen that asks if you'd like to download the assignment - I mention this because it is a bit confusing. You don't need to download anything. Go back to your list of exams in your Pearson VUE account and you will find the option to upload the assignment you have.

Hello,
i think that Oracle Certification is doing wrong when I purchased the assigment I don't know nothing about the mandatory course, I had 1 year for complete the certification without spend more money and now after 4 months since I bought the assigment I have to take this course if I want this certification.

I currently hold a 'Sun Certified Enterprise Architect (SCEA)' certification and would like to upgrade to 'Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 5 Enterprise Architect' by taking the exam 1Z0-868.

Does the mandatory course attendance requirement and 30 Sep 2011 deadline apply to this exam as well?

Regards,
Vani.

Posted by Vani on August 02, 2011 at 10:05 PM PDT #

David, you still have until October 1, 2011 to complete your certifiation path without having to complete training. Oracle reserves the right to update certification paths at any time. Since this path is a 'Master' level path, we needed to bring it in line with Oracle's Master Certification guidelines, thereby adding value to the certification. We do understand that this has caused some hardship for some candidates and that was not our intention. This move will actually add value to your Java Master certification.

Hi,

I have been preparing for months and shocker for me. I am surprise with the mandatory requirement from Oracle. The cost of all the courses very high and unaffordable.
I really don't understand how Oracle thinks taking courses alone can raise standard. Good way of making money. Look like i need to drop of my plans to give SCEA exams. Need to look other options.

Thanks to Oracle

Hi,
I am thinking of taking exam with code 1Z0-862. Will it also need training if taken after October 1st?
Can you please add a list of all exam's(with codes) affected with this training requiremet? This will help.

Posted by kotesh on August 12, 2011 at 12:11 AM PDT #

Kotesh,
It is not the *exam* that requires training after October 1, it is the *certification* that requires training. You can read the announcement on our website at http://bit.ly/gdADK9. All 4 of the affected certifications are listed there. The Oracle Certified Professional, Java EE 5 Web Services Developer is not in this list and will not require training at this time.

In June and July of 2010, I have taken two courses, Developing Web Services using Java Technology, Java EE6 (DWS-4050-EE6)and Developing Architectures for Enterprise Java Applications (SL-425). I have a certificate of completion by Oracle University.
1. Can I use these courses towards my OCMJEA certification after October 1?
2. How do I get these recorded into CertView?
3. Can I send the scans of these certificates to an email address?

Srini

Posted by Srini on August 23, 2011 at 02:35 AM PDT #

Hi Srini,
Please find answers to your questions below:

1. Can I use these courses towards my OCMJEA certification after October 1?
A: If the courses are in the approved list on http://bit.ly/gdADK9, they will count towards your training requirement which the requirement goes into effect Oct 1. There are some new courses being added to this list. If your courses are not on there now, check back in about 2-3 weeks to see if they've been added.

2. How do I get these recorded into CertView?
A: Once you have completed the certification path, you will need to submit your courses for verification. You can find more information about this on our website at http://bit.ly/fuDTrg.

3. Can I send the scans of these certificates to an email address?
A: That is not necessary if you took the courses from OU. They should be in OUs database and we will be able to verify them when you submit the details. If the team is unable to verify the training, they will contact you and request the course completion certificates.

Thanks Brandye.

One more question: Do I have to wait till I complete all three parts of the OCMJEA before I submit the course form? Or can I do it in advance?

Posted by Srini on August 23, 2011 at 10:18 AM PDT #

You can submit it at any time. However, the course form for this certification may not yet be available since the training requirement is not implemented until October 1. Once the form is avaialble, you may submit it at any time. Keep in mind that you only need to submit one course for this certification.

Hi,

There are 6 training courses in the SCEA/OCMJEA list:
* Java Programming Language, Java SE 6
* Object-Oriented Analysis and Design Using UML
* Developing Applications for the Java EE 6 Platform
* Developing Architectures for Enterprise Java Applications
* Developing Applications for the Java EE 5 Platform

My question is... if I plan to certify before October 1, all the courses in the list must be taken or only one course is enought to fulfill the new requirements?

Thanks,
Jorge

Posted by Jorge on September 14, 2011 at 12:49 AM PDT #

Only one course from the list is required for certification.

the training cost are so high and are almost 10 times than the voucher itself, difficult to afford ,cant even get reimbursed so much.

however,seen all your replies above.

Hi,

I have already
cleared "System Administration for the Solaris 10 OS Part 1"
under
"Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Solaris 10 System Administrator"

That means I have already taken one under this certification path

If I want to take now"System Administration for the Solaris 10 OS Part 2"
which falls under same path, after october 1st then should I need to fulfill the new requirement?

Thanks
--Raghu

Posted by guest on September 21, 2011 at 09:28 AM PDT #

Hi all,
The deadline has already been extended once and will not be extended again. Go ahead and submit your assignment and essay. You will not receive your grade by the deadline, but if you pass, you will receive your certification without having to complete the training requirmenet - IF all the requirements were submitted prior to Oct. 1.

@Raghu - you need to complete ALL requirements by Sept. 30. If you have not passed both exams on or before Sept 30, you will be required to complete the training requirement. This is indicated in the FAQ on our website about this training requirement http://bit.ly/gdADK9.

Hi

Probably, I can't finish my assigment and upload before deadline Sept 30.
Can I upload after deadline ? I bought my assigment of 15 June 2011 by Pearson VUE and I've a finish date at 14 Dec 2011.
If I upload assigment after Sept 30, Will I schedule essay exam ?

Hi,

The FAQ makes it sound like if you have received the Solaris 10 Admin Certification before the deadline, ANY hands-on course requirement for the Security Admin Certification would be waved (i.e. As long as you had the Admin Certification before the deadline, taking the Security Admin test after the deadline would be enough. You could get the Security Admin certification even though you never took any hands-on course):

=== from the FAQ
If I would like to pursue both Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Solaris 10 System Administrator and Oracle Certified Expert, Oracle Solaris 10 Security Administrator, do I need to complete 2 courses?

No. If you are an OCP, Oracle Solaris 10 System Administrator, you may obtain the OCE, Oracle Solaris 10 Security Administrator certification by passing the required exam. Additional training is not required.

Also, if you are an OCE, Oracle Solaris 10 Security Administrator, you may obtain the OCP, Oracle Solaris 10 System Administrator certification by passing the required exam. Additional training is not required.
===

Is this correct?

Regards,
-me

Posted by guest on September 27, 2011 at 08:50 AM PDT #

@Dill, you may submit your assignment and complete your essay after September 30, 2011. However, after this date, you will need to complete the training requirement.

@Guest, you are correct. If you have completed the Oracle Solaris 10 Sys Admin, you may obtain the Oracle Solaris 10 Sec Admin without completing training.

I did the two exams for oracle professional certified solaris administrator two weeks ago (in Nigeria) but am yet to collect my success kit and i tried verifying my authorization @ certview.oracle.com but its authorization invalid. If am yet to collect my success kit before this deadline, what will happen?

Posted by Sedow on September 29, 2011 at 01:34 AM PDT #

Sedow,
It can take 4-6 weeks to receive your success kit after you've completed all certification requirements. As long as you've compeleted all the requirements by Oct 1, you're fine. If you're having trouble authorizing your CertView account to view your certification, go ahead and try 3 times. After 3 failed attempts to authorize your account, your account will be referred to our team for manual processing. You should hear back from them within 72 hours.

You do not necessarily need to do the training before you take the exam, but you'll need to do the training before you can obtain the certification. The training is now required.

Hi Brandye,

is the delay of end of october always the goal?
Because we are already end of october and no news from Oracle ... it would be very difficult now to be informed of a "no pass", after 3 month of waiting for a result!

Thanks for your support and hoping that this situation will once be cleared ...

Best reards,
Pom

Posted by Pom on October 28, 2011 at 11:32 AM PDT #

Pom, I assume you are referring to an assignment for which you are awaiting a grade. If you receive a failing grade on your assignment and you had submitted everything on or before the deadline of Sept 30, then you will have the opportunity to resubmit your assignment within 30 days. If you pass on the 2nd attempt, you will not be required to complete the training to become certified - since the delay has been on Oracle's side.
