In a chat with Oracle Academy program manager Britta Wolf, Marc shared his testing experience, his motivation, and his future plans around certification. Read Britta's chat with Marc. Marc always had a passion for computers, so the leap to earning certification while gaining his education was an easy one. Showing his dedication to his craft, Marc spent 6 months of intensive study for his first certification exam, while still attending school and working. Presenting his certification exam project to a large audience at a graduation school event in July, earned Marc a large round of applause. An In-Depth Look at The Kaplan Way for Learning

contributed by Kaplan IT Training   To understand how Kaplan IT Training’s exam preparation product fits into your study schedule, you should first understand the Kaplan Way. The Kaplan Way is a comprehensive learning strategy that combines scientific, evidence-based design philosophy with a straightforward educational approach to learning. Learning science is grounded in research that provides evidence on how people learn. So to help candidates reach their outcomes efficiently and effectively, we employ a three-phase learning strategy: Prepare • Practice • Perform®.   When thinking of certification, the Prepare phase introduces the knowledge and skills needed through real-world work experience and/or classroom environment (whether traditional or virtual). This could also include projects, readings, video recordings, or labs.   The Perform phase is the actual certification exam, where you are tested to verify that you are qualified for that technology and/or job role. The certification exam is composed of objectives, subobjectives, and tasks on which you must demonstrate competence by meeting or exceeding the passing score published by Oracle.   But our focus is on the in-between Practice stage, which bridges the gap between the education in the Prepare phase and the high-stakes testing of the Perform phase. In Kaplan IT Training’s exam preparation, you apply knowledge and skills through reinforcing what you've learned well and identifying gaps in what you haven't mastered yet. And throughout this process, you are given constant feedback to help you refine your study plan and build brain muscle for exam day.   In a nutshell, Kaplan IT Training provides an unflinching and honest assessment of where you're at, so that you know how to prepare and gain the confidence you need to be successful on exam day.   More than Questions   At the core of our product is the question bank, which we call the QBank. Depending on which certification exam you study for, you may see anything from standard multiple-choice questions to advanced items with hotspot and list/reorder options. But at the core, there is a question stem, usually couched in some kind of real-world scenario, a set of choices or fill-in-the-blank, and a correct answer. The QBank is weighted the same way as the certification objectives, so the number of questions you'll see is an accurate representation of what you'll see on the live exam.   If you use the Quick Quiz mode, then you can go through the QBank as a simulated exam. It will be timed like the live exam, and you won't be able to see which answers you got correct or incorrect until you go through the whole exam or run out of time. Although drilling through the QBank in this way helps you gain experience on how to take an exam, it does not delve below the surface of the questions.   For learning retention, the preferred mode is Custom Quiz. In this mode, you can choose the objectives and/or subobjectives you would like to pull questions from, and whether you would like to grade and see explanations as you go. At this you point, you'll come to realize that there is a lot more going on than just question and answer. Our detailed explanations include not only the rationale behind the right and wrong choices, but also in which situations those wrong choices could become correct answers. This technique allows us to cover multiple concepts that you'll see on the exam through only a single question! And of course, you will also find our official Oracle references for further information and study, if needed (see below).   Custom Quiz Screen from the 1Z0-808 Exam Preparation product.   But there's more than simply a QBank in our exam preparation product. It also includes the following tools. Performance Tracker: Track your personal progress and timings, and compare them to others using the same product. Flashcards: Memorize critical concepts, commands, and configurations that you will need to know for exam day. Study Calendar: Organize and optimize your study time. DIscussion Board: Share study tips with other candidates and set up informal study groups to keep you motivated.   And of course, you can download and print the QBank if you want to study offline. Think of our exam prep product as the Swiss Army knife—it fits any type of learner and any study schedule.   If you have a question on any of our content, we have dedicated subject matter experts that are only an email away. Don't go into an Oracle certification exam cold. Go in prepared and confident with Kaplan IT Training!

Java Magazine Columnist Simon Roberts on the Value of Java Certification

Java Magazine subscribers, are likely familiar with the Fix This column created and maintained by Simon Roberts and Mikalai Zaikin. This regular column presents a short list of exam-level questions along with detailed answers. Simon and Mikalai have a long history with the Java technology and Java certification exams.  I recently caught up with Simon via email and he was gracious enough to give his thoughts on Java skills and certification. Read the interview below to get valuable insight from a true Java insider. Oracle: You created the early Java Certifications - what value do you see in earning a Java certification today?  Simon: I think the benefits are the same today as they were back in 1996. One, of course, is that employers need effective ways to filter job applicants. Twenty years ago we used to joke that the qualification test for getting an interview as a Java programmer was whether you could fog a mirror held up to your face. But even when there are more jobs than applicants, employers and their HR departments need to slim down piles of applications to a level they can practically interview, and just like a degree, a recognized certification can be a useful tool for HR to achieve that. On that point, while many applicants will bring CS [computer science] degrees, it's common to want someone who can hit the ground running using Java with a level of competence that isn't assured simply by that degree. The second benefit might be less obvious; different people have different attitudes to what I might broadly call "third party evaluation" of their skills. Some might find it threatening or perhaps even take offense at the idea of being asked to jump through a hoop. Others (and I think it's probably obvious that I think this is a far healthier attitude) are intrigued at the opportunity to find out how they measure up to an objective, consistent, and widely recognized bar. They see it as a chance to find out how good they are, and to expose their own weaknesses with the deliberate intention of improving further. Often I can tell far more about a person's work ethic and how they will work in a team from how they feel about challenges of this kind than from more direct questions, and in particular from questions about the technical knowledge that are otherwise core to an interview. RELATED: Your Guide to Getting Started With Java Certification Oracle: What do you believe is the value in keeping your Java Certifications current? ". . . the deliberate intention to take a certification motivates us to put the study in, and that in turn avoids us simply muddling-through writing our solutions "the old way" even though that old way still works." Simon: Each major release of Java brings significant new features. Sometimes to the language, sometimes to the APIs, and often to both. While library features are often learned when the particular library is used, it's best if programming team members are fully conversant with all the language features of the version their companies use. And again, the deliberate intention to take a certification motivates us to put the study in, and that in turn avoids us simply muddling-through writing our solutions "the old way" even though that old way still works. Where frameworks are concerned, there's often a lot of concepts at the heart of those frameworks, and understanding them properly is typically key to getting good performance and creating a system that's as readable and maintainable as possible. So, again, programmers who plan to use these frameworks do well to look at the objectives of a relevant certification and spend the time studying that would be the normal precursor to actually taking the exam. Oracle: How do you think recent changes in the Java language will affect employers’ demand for skills? Simon: The changes in Java 8 open the possibilities of making clean, practical, use of some very exciting, and very effective, paradigms drawn from functional programming. Most organizations that I get to interact with are still struggling to get their entire staff base up to speed on these. From Java 9, it seems reasonable to expect that anyone involved in building libraries will need a good understanding of the module system, and there are of course more new features since then too, though the type inferencing possibilities for "var" might fairly be viewed as less dramatic than the lambda and modules ecosystems. But of course, all new hiring will result in one of two situations; the employer can either add more "seeds" with people who know the new features, or can create more demand for internal training with people who must also be trained up on these new features. As a result, it's reasonable to expect that an employer will be more impressed by, and more interested in, the candidate who already has the new skills.   RELATED: Boost Your Career Opportunities as a Java Developer Oracle: As the demands for enterprise-level skills become more diverse and mixed — beyond just Java — how do you see the value of more advanced certifications changing? Simon: New technologies; new frameworks, new language features, and new libraries, seem to be becoming increasingly complex (there are exceptions of course), and it's probably fair to expect this trend to continue. They bring more and more foundation concepts, and bigger and bigger capabilities spread across more classes and methods. Demonstrating a breadth of knowledge against a recognized certification must surely be a more convincing way of claiming competence rather than building a couple of simple tests at home and then simply writing "experience with Xyz framework" on your resume. The Top Way to Keep Your Best Employees

Want to keep your best talent? Invest in their learning and development. I read an article recently about recession proofing your organization with digital badging. The article made some great points about how the record low unemployment rate (3.9% in December 2018) may not last, with some analysts predicting a slow down in growth as early as 2020. The article went on to point out that during the 'Great Recession of 2008,' employers who focused on training and developing their workforce over cutting jobs and focusing solely on the bottom line actually made financial gains. "On average, those top 10% of engaged employers posted profit gains of 26% through the last recession, compared with a 14% decline at comparable employers, says Jim Harter, Chief Workplace Scientist at Gallup." The author wrapped up the article with a compelling finding supporting training and digital credentialing. "When employees are trained on the job, an organization can save an average of $70,000 annually and receive a 10% increase in productivity, according to Forbes." This got me thinking. . . Certification is a sound investment in any economy! Oracle Certification has a well-established digital credentialing program. Surveys consistently show that having certified individuals in your organization increases productivity, customer satisfaction, and job satisfaction. It would stand to reason that if a focus on training and development could help to recession-proof your business by keeping your best talent and making them more productive, the same training and development could help keep your best talent during a time of economic growth.   Related:  Digital Badges Are Now an Essential Tool for Employers and Candidates Alike According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics' Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, published January 9, 2019, the ratio of unemployed persons per job opening was 0.9 in November 2018. This means that there is more than one job opening for every unemployed person, which shows a dramatic decrease from Great Recession numbers, when there were more than six unemployed people for every job opening. Related:  European Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Jobs are Booming, but... Employment experts say that this is an excellent time to look for a new job. So, how do you keep your talent? Invest in them! Oracle Certification is No Joke for Wang Haizhou - It Led Him to a Career He Loves

OCM Your Life by Wang Haizhou Six months ago, I was just an ordinary junior student, sitting in my dorm every day, writing Java programs or flipping through the pages of Bruce Eckel's “Thinking in Java,” sending out my resumé everywhere and chatting with my roommates. The only things I knew about databases were the basics of SQL and a rough idea of Oracle Database architecture. Although I had spent quite a bit of money learning Oracle, I really didn't pay much attention to it. My career plan was simply to be a conscientious programmer, or better said, a conscientious programmer with some basic understanding of Oracle Database architecture. My life was just like that: no Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) and no Oracle Certified Master (OCM). Oracle Certification is No Joke The change came on a day in April -- April 2, to be specific. Good that it was April 2! One day earlier (on April 1 - April Fool's Day) and I would have felt I was fooling myself. After all, I didn’t want to waste the 8000 yuan I spent registering for the OCP exam, which was not a small amount of money for a university student who was not yet financially independent. On that morning, I put aside all my Java-related study materials and focused my efforts on Oracle Database architecture. In the past, I had needed to take a break every hour when I was writing code. But that day, I was surprised to find that I managed to sit at my desk from 8 am to 11 pm -- and I did that every day for a whole week. After that, I made the bold assumption that this must be something I loved! At that time I had also been looking at various articles and videos about Steve Jobs and had found that he always said, “Do what you love.” What’s more, OCP training courses were added to the Oracle Workforce Development Program (WDP) I was in. That’s when I decided to give up Java and start learning databases. As a result, I didn’t touch Java for six months! Some days later, I happened to be invited to a lecture, and that’s where I met Teacher H. It occurred to me that I had read quite a few of his blogs on ITPUB, and I felt that I could trust him. As a result, I became the only attendee that day who registered for his OCM training courses. Related:  Oracle Certified Master - An Unforgettable Journey There were some interesting stories in the process of my registration for the training courses. I was told by the staff member in charge of the registration that they would call me in two weeks to make sure I would be attending the courses, but after a month I still hadn’t heard anything from them. I started to wonder whether they had forgotten me. If  they had, then the spark of interest in databases inside me would have been extinguished before it could even start burning! I was debating whether to get in touch with Teacher H when, to my amazement, Teacher H contacted me! Upon hearing that the induction session would be held in Beijing, I finally knew what had happened. I probably hadn’t gotten the call because I lived in Tianjin, and the staff members had likely assumed that I would not be interested in courses in Beijing. However, they had completely underestimated my enthusiasm -- they didn’t know I’d been studying Steve Jobs and that I was very motivated. My conversation with Teacher H was short but uplifting. Basically, it went: “Are you in?” “Of course!” “Then we’ll start this week!” Back then, Beijing was very new to me. I had only been there twice. Each time, I told people I was going to Beijing for a trip, but actually I was going to see my girlfriends. In Beijing, as far as I could remember, for two yuan you could take any metro train on any metro line. Amazing! You can go anywhere you want to go, for just two yuan! I’ve never viewed myself as smart, but I do think I have talent. By that I mean I am always clear about what I should do and uncompromisingly confident that I can do it best. Wherever I am, Tianjin or Beijing, it’s just not a problem at all. One Step at a Time to Oracle Certification Learning OCM was not easy, especially when I first started. I felt completely lost in topics like operating systems, databases and VMs. No one is able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and the only thing you can do is to walk one step further than others every day. Taking the advantage of my youth and my manageable workload, I kept on studying from 8 am to 10 pm every day, trying to figure out every exam objective, as well as tackling operating systems, VMs, OCP, etc. When I had questions, I didn’t like to ask other people right away, because I didn’t think it would help me remember the answers over the long term; I preferred to Google them first. Sometimes when I was reading the answer to a question on Google, I would have a new question and then I would Google the new one, and so on and so forth. It might take a day to solve a problem, but in the process my knowledge would have broadened. However, you can’t always trust the Internet. I would highly recommend hands-on practice as much as possible, because seeing is believing. If I found a really good answer, I would save it for reference. Oracle Certification Exam Results Best All Other University Exam Results The only thing I was proud of was that I didn’t bother my teachers too much with the OCP stuff -- but I was bothered a lot myself. Our OCM exam was initially scheduled in mid-July. I had to take the OCP exam, CET 6 and the final exam, all at the same time. I had less than three weeks to prepare for all of them, so I forced myself to schedule the OCP exam preparation in two time slots every day: 6:30am to 8:00am and 11:00am to 1:30pm. My definition of OCP at that time was “Obligation, Confidence and Patience.” Later on, our OCM exam was delayed for some reason, but I took the OCP exam as planned and passed it. This experience has become the treasure of my lifetime. As my friend Xiaoyu said, ‘If you can survive this, there is nothing you can’t overcome in the future.” It is also worth noting that the result of that final exam was the best out of all my university exams. As I mentioned, our OCM exam was delayed, which was not a bad thing for me because at least now I would have enough time to prepare for it. After months of hard work, I had a whole new mindset. If the OCP exam had been about obligating myself to face it, the OCM exam to me was really an obligation. I had learned to be responsible for my own future. There were a lot of times when I needed to discipline myself and to endure loneliness, but I managed to review everything every two days, making note of the points I didn’t understand and studying them carefully. To me, OCM meant “Obligation, Confidence and Mastery.” Related:  This Top Oracle Certification Gave Lu Haichao Confidence and Maturity Hard Work Pays Off I don't want to say much here about what the actual exam looks like and what you need to pay attention to, because I will go over everything in detail with you before the exam if you attend the same course I did. Otherwise, how could I feel a sense of accomplishment as a teaching assistant? In the one and a half months after the exam, I was anxious every day waiting for the results. I was really worried that I wouldn’t pass. I was even ready to retake the exam. But on the evening of October 4, I received a congratulations email from Oracle. It was a little overwhelming for me. I remember reading it five times before I could be sure that it was about me, that it was about OCM... and that it was about me passing the OCM exam. Six months went by so fast. Now, looking back, I can still feel the incredible sense of fulfillment. I woke up every morning and felt that there was something to look forward to, because I was doing what I loved, and I also made a lot of friends. In my eyes, the whole OCM exam process is like life writ small, and I really enjoyed it. I know I should end here, but it has just occurred to me that my primary school Chinese teacher used to tell us that a good ending should bring out the theme of the story and link with the beginning, thus elevating the whole text. Therefore, let me say: the title “OCM Your Life” is meant to suggest that you look at your life as a happy Obligation and be Confident about it, until you are able to Master it someday. Oracle Certified Master - An Unforgettable Journey

Sometimes A Memory Is Not in The Past My Journey to OCM Certification by Li Yan The two-day Oracle Certified Master (OCM) exam is over. I didn’t say “finally” because it’s been an unforgettable journey, and I don’t expect it to end. I don’t want to get overly emotional, but, looking back, there are some things I still can’t forget. I thought that I was going to be walking on air after the exam, but now I feel somewhat empty. It is not because of the mistakes and imperfections in the exam. Life is flawed, so why should we insist on perfection? We need to learn to fail gracefully. No, it’s just that I don’t know where to go after finishing an assignment or getting something done. Is my life just one challenge after another? I am trying to settle my mind, to condense this experience into words, for those who are learning and preparing for the OCM exam, for those who have passed the exam and also for myself. I won’t be discussing the actual exam here. The whole story: an exam triggered by a joke This entire exam was triggered by nothing more than a joke. I once asked Kamus to give me an OCM credential, which I meant as a joke, but it ended up leading to a long series of events. After that joke, I somehow managed to register for the training courses along with a lot of friends, and met Master H, who was said to be shy and introverted. Then I decided to take the exam because I saw my course mates had all registered for it, making me feel that I ought to do it as well. I used to be an unreliable Database Administrator (DBA) and was now a supposedly reliable little leader, so I don’t have the incentives that other people do -- for example, the ability to job-hop, earn salary increases or gain respect. As Teacher Gao said to me, “No wonder you are in no hurry to take the exam.” In this sense, the reason that I was taking the courses and the exam was not ambition -- even I didn’t know why I did it. Related:  The Craziest Experience of Zhuang Hui's Life Provides Good Advice For OCM Exam Preparation I started feeling the pressure after registering for the OCM exam on June 28. Once I’d registered and paid the money, the pressure was on. As luck would have it, it was my busiest time of year. Our company had adopted a new system, and we could be expected to work overtime on any given day, so it was really not easy to make time for practice. It was true that I had two months to prepare, but time flies, especially when I was so busy every day -- I could not believe how fast time went by. Finally, I was able to ask for some leave, so I could study in the classroom, which was my lifesaver. I worked alongside my classmates, discussing problems, answering questions, helping and motivating each other. I tried to get rid of my nervousness and bring out the best in myself to adjust to the needs of the exam. As far as I could remember, I had never felt nervous in my life until now, so I wondered if there was something wrong with me. Team: all of you I am lucky because all along the way I have had a very collaborative team. At my company, my office colleagues are all very supportive, reassuring me that I can ask for leave. In Oracle Workforce Development Program (WDP), we called our exam prep team “Team Fun.” During stressful times, all my teammates had their own ways of making us laugh. We were always chatting and laughing, even outside of Oracle University. Even the teachers were amazed by how much fun we’ve had. We had our “funny duo” of Uncle Yang and Aunt Niu, and our “crazy duo,” the handsome Mr. Xie and the great Mr. Yan. We are classmates, comrades in arms and friends forever. Related: This Top Oracle Certification Gave Lu Haichao Confidence and Maturity Thank you: remember forever I got acquainted with this Oracle-authorized WDP in 2010, when I decided to purchase Oracle’s third-party services. What I saw from them was not just technical proficiency and professional integrity, but a dedication to technology and a readiness to share. After my first conversation with the management team, I knew that it would be a good choice. Over the last few years, I have learned a lot from them and have enjoyed a harmonious atmosphere. Finally, I want to thank our fellow friends who took the exam on September 5. Your help gave us so much comfort, and we look forward to your perfect Show Time. “A clear goal, some hard work, a pleasing result, an unforgettable memory.” I am now especially impressed by these words. I want to say that this memory is not in the past; it is a mark that will remain in my heart forever. I also want to say to my course mates: it is really nice to know you all. Lin Cong Solves a Major Database Issue With Skills Learned While Preparing for OCM Exam

There is a little something for everyone in this post written by Lin Cong, Oracle Certified Master! The story begins with sage advice about preparing for the Oracle Certified Master exam. It goes on to give a detailed account of an actual issue solved by Lin (failures and all!) with skills and knowledge gained while preparing for the OCM exam.  by Lin Cong Here are some ideas Database Administrators (DBAs) may not have been exposed to without pursuing training and certification: Training and certification can improve your technical skills. Getting an OCM certificate increases your odds of being recognized by the companies in the industry. OCM training is a tough process. Getting the OCM certificate validates your efforts and boosts your confidence. Getting the OCM certificate inspires you to continue learning. OCM represents the highest level of certification in Oracle databases, but I know very well that I don't have all of the corresponding skills, so the only way to avoid hearing things like, ‘Can’t you solve the problem? You're an OCM!’ is to keep learning. Related:  Liu Denfeng Gives Advice on Beginning Your Own Exciting Journey to OCM Certification Things learned through OCM prep that will help other DBAs: The nine scenarios in the OCM exam constitute the core skills that an excellent Oracle DBA should have. In OCM prep, you need to connect the individual elements of what you have learned and go through it again systematically. The Oracle official documentation is must-have material in OCM prep. I had not read the official documentation before, but after going through the process of OCM prep, I am now able to solve the problems I encounter in my work and study by referring to the documentation rather than relying on searching the internet. This has saved me much time and effort. Through repeated training, I have memorized the most frequently used commands, so that I do not have to refer to the documentation or the manual, making me seem more professional at work. The biggest reward of OCM prep is not the final certificate but the awareness of the value of persistence. I believe that every OCM trainee of Vastdata Education has experienced the transition from spending over 10 hours on the first scenario to finishing it in less than an hour. Only the participants can understand the hard work required to accomplish that transition. Work hard and get a little closer to your goal every day, and someday you will find that the goal which used to be far away is now within your grasp. Related:  See How Franck Pachot Stays One Step Ahead With Oracle Certification Tips for preparing for OCM exams - mentorship-type information: The official documentation is crucial. The answers to all exam questions can be found in the documentation, so it is vital to memorize every concept. Try to remember all the commands. Given the exam's time limit, it is not possible to refer to the documentation for every question. Repeated practice is an absolute necessity; practice makes perfect. Master all the keyboard commands and have a decent knowledge of Linux. Be detail-oriented in your practice. Pay attention to the mistakes you have made, and try to figure out their causes and solutions, as they may come up in the exam. Use this advice to start your own Oracle Certified Master journey! QUESTION: How did you solve a business problem using the skills you’ve learned along your professional journey? A case of production data recovery (where I applied what I have learned in practice for the first time) Background On the evening of day "T", I got an unexpected call from the development manager and learned that the operator had accidentally double-clicked on batch processing while running the EOD processes, causing sysdate to switch to T+2 (it should have been T+1). The boss asked if the database could be restored to what it was before the batch processing. Upon hearing this, I felt as if I had momentarily lost my reason . Although I knew that theoretically it could be restored to any point in time, if there was an RMAN full backup with archive logs (I learned this from training courses), but I had never tried it before. I was very nervous. I designed the disaster recovery system for the company. The specific strategies are as follows: Take an RMAN full backup at 1:00 am every day (including archive logs and control files) Delete archive logs after a successful backup Configure retention policy to a recovery window of 30 days Create two physical standby databases using DataGuard Delete archive logs from the physical databases using the script I wrote, which deletes archive logs daily after they have been applied. Recovery process Preparation Instruct field personnel immediately to stop operations on the database (that had already come a bit late,:another operation had occurred after the error. The right thing to do is to shut down the applications right away to avoid any further change in the data) Make sure that there had been no operations on the production database and that the database was restored to the test environment Establish the specific point in time it needed to be restored to: 19: 49:42 Set up a test environment with sufficient disk space After the preparation, I started the recovery process. The first thing that occurred to me was to immediately take a full backup of the database using RMAN, and then to restore the backup data into the test environment. But this approach turned out to be wrong, because that full backup was taken after the mistaken operation, and the database could not be restored to an earlier point in time using archive logs with the existing data. In other words: if you want to return the database to a specified point in time, you must have a full backup of the database before that time. Therefore, my first trial of database recovery ended in failure. In my second trial of data recovery, I found the RMAN full backup taken at 1:00 am that day and restored the backup to the test environment. Production environment: RAC + ASM. Test environment: single-instance + file system. First, create a parameter file for the test database matching that of the production database (The contents of the parameter file will not be detailed here) Restore the controlfile from a specific backup piece: Mount the database: Specify the catalog for the backup set: Specifying the catalog for archive logs: Restore the database: Relocate database rename file: Open the database: As of 00:00, the database was successfully recovered.  Conclusion When there is a need to recover the database due to mistaken operations, the applications must be stopped first, and any other operations on the database must be stopped as well, to prevent further issues. The purpose of backup is recovery. No matter how well the backup strategy is written, it is a total waste if it does not work at the time of recovery. Backup and recovery tests should be conducted for a variety of situations on a regular basis. Emergency plans should be prepared and practiced so that there is no disorderly haste at the time of recovery. This Top Oracle Certification Gave Lu Haichao Confidence and Maturity

My journey with OCM by Lu Haichao I can’t be part of your past, but I surely will not miss your future. In a word, I wish we had met earlier. - Nan Kang Bai Qi, Still Life Days ("Fu Sheng Liu Ji") The first time I heard about Oracle was at an informal Oracle training program at university. Back then, my conception of Oracle was rather shallow. I thought that it was nothing more than just writing and executing a few SQL commands and didn’t realize how short-sighted I was. After that, I didn’t touch Oracle until I entered the workplace. I had to engage in Oracle work because of my job, making me realize how interesting and fascinating it was. I also got to know more about Oracle by teaching myself. However, being in the position I was in, I also needed to learn things like Linux, AIX and VMWare ESX and to know something about hardware, like servers and storage. This reduced my time to learn Oracle, so I only had an incomplete understanding of it. Though I didn’t have much time to practice and delve deep, I still managed to get the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) credential in 2015 based on what I had learned, bringing my study of Oracle into a new phase. I had a very confusing time after that. I wanted to study further, but I was afraid that I couldn’t keep up with the pace, because I had been teaching myself and didn’t have my own learning system. I was also taking my financial situation into account. Hesitating like that for about a year, I finally made up my mind to learn Oracle Certified Master (OCM) and to take the OCM exam. RELATED:  Liu Denfeng Gives Advice on Beginning Your Own Exciting Journey to OCM Certification I found an Oracle authorized Workforce Development Program (WDP) through the internet and using recommendations from my friends. At that point I just thought it was very cool and must have many talented people, but not much else. At the end of April, I was allowed to audit an Oracle class given by Teacher H. I remember that session was about performance tuning. To be honest, I had been a little worried that I couldn’t keep up with the teacher’s pace, because I didn’t have a good basic knowledge of Oracle. But Teacher H was good at making complicated things simple and getting the principles across. Every point was clearly delivered. I said this to many people: “I’ve attended quite a few Oracle classes, but Teacher H was the first one who could make things so clear.” I really wished that I had known about Teacher H earlier, because that way, I could have improved myself earlier. But it was not too late. Just as what is written in Still Life Days, "I can’t be part of your past, but I surely will not miss your future." I started working very hard, and I believed that I could learn so much from the marvelous Teacher H. I also became more confident in myself. As a result, without any hesitation, I registered for the training courses. At the beginning of May, I started learning Oracle and preparing for the OCM exam. The OCM exam requires a wide range of knowledge and covers different aspects of Oracle. When I started, it was very tough. Though I learned the theories fast, thanks to Teacher H’s instruction, practice was another thing. It was quite often that I still couldn’t figure out a scenario after a whole night working. It was really tiring. Luckily, I had encouragement from my friends and my teacher, who supported me through the whole process. From scenario 1 to scenario 9, each was an unforgettable memory. After managing to finish all of the scenarios for the first time, I really felt like I was flying. Things got much better the second time. There were still lots of errors, but I enjoyed the process of improving my skills and troubleshooting all kinds of problems. I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment, almost like I was invincible. RELATED:  The Craziest Experience of Zhuang Hui's Life Provides Good Advice For OCM Exam Preparation I got my OCM certificate and jacket on December 6. I thought I would be jumping for joy, but I wasn’t. Instead, I was thinking about the more than 200 days and nights since I had started learning OCM, from struggling with a weak foundation to making rapid progress and laying a solid foundation for further study. I didn’t how many experiments I had done and how many difficult problems I had dealt with. I just knew that it was the encouragement and inspiration from Teacher H and all my friends that kept me going through these days and nights and made me into a new version of myself in six months, more confident and more mature. Looking back at this journey, the person I want to thank the most is my teacher. I also want to thank my comrades-in-arms for sharing with me the difficult problems in their practice and how to solve these problems. It is fair to say that I can’t imagine how I was able to go through all this without their company. "I wish we had met earlier" is not just about my teachers, but also about my friends, with whom I worked toward the OCM exam, and about my dedication to learning Oracle. Finally, I want to share with you one of my favorite sayings and hope it will inspire you as much as it does me: “As long as we are persistent and hardworking enough, together we will shine magnificently!” Start your own Oracle Certified Master Journey. *This article was provided and authorized by Oracle Certified Master Union. The Craziest Experience of Zhuang Hui's Life Provides Good Advice For OCM Exam Preparation

My Journey with OCM by Zhuang Hui I especially want to thank my wife for her support. Last night I was doing experiments till dawn, and our kids were crying in the next room. My wife handled both of them all by herself without disturbing me. Looking after two children at such a young age, she made no complaints and did her best to support my study. I really appreciate her. This journey with Oracle Certified Master (OCM) has probably been the craziest and most unforgettable learning experience in my life. I have never felt so excited and insane at the same time, even more than preparing for the national Gaokao (college entrance exam) years ago. RELATED: Liu Denfeng Gives Advice on Beginning Your Own Exciting Journey to OCM Certification Crash Courses I highly recommend the OCM crash course. I took the crash course as soon as I registered for the exam. Since I started with a weak foundation in Oracle, I had lots of problems the first time I went through all the scenarios. One good thing about the crash courses was that you had classmates to discuss these problems with so that you could deal with them quickly. Studying alone would undermine your confidence. What’s more, learning with classmates was a powerful motivator. During the 7-day crash course, I slept less than 6 hours every day. I remember coming back immediately after dinner to do experiments, practicing until after midnight. Surprisingly, though I felt tired physically, I didn’t feel like sleeping. This can be attributed to the teachers at the Oracle WDP training center, who were able to make the technology so exciting. Besides, my classmates were working so hard that it was easy to be influenced by them. I think the most important thing about taking the crash course was the camaraderie. It was very special to have an opportunity to get to know a group of like-minded friends, and they were all very successful in taking the OCM exam. Here, I especially want to thank Fan Jinyi and Wang Qianlong for sharing with me their work experience, materials, and useful tools and software. When I had problems in my study or at work, my classmates were always there to help me. I was able to learn so much from their timely help and feedback, even more than I did from the teachers. Practice "If you read a book a hundred times, the meaning of the book will emerge naturally." I suggest practicing as much as you can after going through session the first time. If you practice 20 times before listening again, you will find the theories easier to understand and have a clearer idea. I found it very difficult to understand what architecture was really about, even though I listened several times, but after practicing 20 times, I found it very easy! You have to get rid of the textbook as quickly as possible. It was tough at the beginning, but you have to push yourself to keep going. Reflect on your practice each time you finish it. Print out the extremely difficult commands and put them in your pocket, so you can have a read while you walk or eat. Try to put the most common commands into your muscle memory and make them part of your basic skills. You don’t have to memorize large sections of code, because you can find them in the official documentation. You have to study the official documentation very carefully, making comparisons between different sections, and you will be able to locate the commands quickly. In the end, you will find that you only need to search one or two places in the documentation for each scenario. Moreover, "sharp tools make good work." An SSD is a must-have as it saves you a large amount of time. Those who are able to finish one scenario within 20 seconds must have first-class configurations. I bought a secondhand PC specifically for practice. A SSD hard drive is 180GB, so scenario 1 can be put onto SSD, but most of my practice was done on the VSphere virtual server at my company. Finally, I want to tell you something about training: “Obsession leads to mastery -- practice, practice, practice!”   RELATED:  Feng Zhen Makes the Right Choice in Following Oracle Certification Mind Map I have used four mind-mapping tools and prefer XMIND, because it meets the user’s basic needs without needing to register. A daily mind map is necessary. Even though you can’t do it every day, you have to organize your mind map regularly. One of the advantages of mind mapping is review, sorting pieces of information and structuring them into a whole. There is the famous Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve, in which Ebbinghaus' experiment demonstrates the importance of review. It also shows that the better you understand what you have memorized, the slower you forget it. Mind mapping helps you remember and understand. It is worth noting that some commands still have to be memorized because it helps you understand. It’s not just for the exam. If you memorize them just for the exam, you can forget them easily under pressure. Here, I would like to share with you the forgetting curve created by Ebbinghaus. Human beings have two major categories of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory. The first memory cycle is 5 minutes, the second 30 minutes, and the third 12 hours. These three memory cycles belong to the category of short-term memory. Here are the important long-term memory cycles: the fourth memory cycle is 1 day; the fifth 2 days; the sixth 4 days; the seventh 7 days; and the eighth 15 days. Try to practice according to the long-term memory cycles when getting rid of the textbook -- it will be easier to do it scenario by scenario. If you stick to it, you will find that many commands will really become muscle memory, and you can type them out intuitively. "It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books. It is better to read different authors than to travel ten thousand miles. It is better to be mentored by great teachers than to read different authors. It is better to practice by yourself than to be mentored by great teachers." - Chinese Proverb Your own practice day after day can be regarded as "traveling ten thousand miles" in your journey with OCM. In this sense, you are able to figuratively travel ten thousand miles, read ten thousand books and be mentored by great teachers at the training center. Naturally, you’ll improve your skills. I also want to thank all my classmates for your help, which made my journey with OCM a lot easier. Of course, my journey through life will also be a lot easier because of the help from my friends. I especially want to thank my wife for her support. When I registered for the training courses, our younger child was less than a year old and often woke up several times during the night. Our older one was less than three years old. It was very tiring to look after both of them. I thank her for this. I felt profoundly sorry for not being there for all of them. The best gift I can give to my children now is the role model of a hard-working dad. Finally, I want to share with you one of my favorite sayings: "Persistence brings you a fine life. Self-discipline helps you win the future!" GOOD LUCK! Start your own Oracle Certified Master Journey. *This article was provided and authorized by Oracle Certified Master Union. Feng Zhen Makes the Right Choice in Following Oracle Certification

My OCM Exam by Feng Zhen It has been a month since my OCM exam, but I still remember it vividly. I took the exam on October 23 of this year, as I had just started my 4th year in university. Needless to say, I had no experience at all. By comparison, other testers were older than I was and had much work experience. I felt very nervous and not confident enough to handle emergency situations. Fortunately, the teachers in the training courses were very good, and my fellow classmates offered me helpful solutions to many problems, which boosted my confidence in passing the exam. I believe that many people have the same question during training: "Which one should I actually learn, Oracle or MySQL?" It is true that MySQL is very popular right now, and more and more people are learning it. I’d like to use my own experience to help future students potentially answer this question. RELATED:  See How Franck Pachot Stays One Step Ahead With Oracle Certification In fact, when I first started, the question of whether to learn Oracle or MySQL had been bothering me for a long time. I asked myself if it was worth it to spend so much time and effort learning Oracle. But, after finishing the exam, the doubt gradually disappeared as I started my job hunt and went through a series of interviews. My first interview was with a state-owned enterprise (SOE). Most SOEs use Oracle. Although there is a growing trend toward MySQL in SOEs, the core database technology remains Oracle. The questions I was asked during the interview were all related to Oracle: for example, "Can you tell us your thoughts on optimization?" As it happens, optimization is something we talked about all the time in our training courses, sometimes using concrete examples. It is not difficult to develop your own opinion on this subject, so long as you pay attention to topics like this and work through them. My later interviews were with internet companies, where the processes were different from those of SOEs. The questions were more specific, and because internet companies commonly use MySQL, they asked me more MySQL questions. However, if you know your way around Oracle, you can handle most MySQL questions with ease, because there are many similarities between them; just some basic prep work on MySQL before the interview should suffice. RELATED:  Liu Denfeng Gives Advice on Beginning Your Own Exciting Journey to OCM Certification I also want to advise those who are still not sure whether to learn Oracle or MySQL, as I used to be, not to worry too much. No matter which database you primarily learn, you will likely end up having to learn the other one as well. What matters in today's job market is not only talent but also versatility. In the end, what we learn is just a product. The most important thing is to grasp the core principles of relational databases and learn new things faster based on what we already know. I have now started my business internship. It was not easy at first. I needed to know a variety of systems and interact with MySQL. Although it is similar to Oracle, there are many specifics that require time to learn. Therefore, the OCM exam is just the beginning. It can only promise us a good start but cannot guarantee our future. If we want to be DBAs, we must be ready to learn all the time, and if we want to distinguish ourselves on this career path, we must put in more effort than we might with others. Job Growth Continues for DBAs in 2018

If job security matters to you, it’s a very good time to be – or to become – a database administrator (DBA). According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, DBA jobs are projected to grow 11 percent by 2026, which is faster than the 7 percent average for all occupations.1 Increasing need for skilled DBAs Growth in the DBA occupation is being driven by the growing data needs of all sorts of companies. Database administrators are being asked to organize data and present it in a manner that is understandable for analysts and business decision-makers to understand. The same report states that the increasing adoption of cloud services by small and medium-sized businesses who lack their own dedicated IT departments could increase the employment prospects of DBAs as well. The Labor Bureau also predicts a favorable job market that will see database administrators in high demand, with some firms finding it difficult to find qualified workers. Applicants who have experience with the latest database administration technology and techniques will face the best prospects. Database theory, design, queries, and structured query language are important competencies to have. What does a database administrator do? Being a DBA involves managing and maintaining complex databases and other software. Almost all businesses rely on one or more databases to manage and keep track of their commerce and other activities. According to CTS, today’s DBA duties depends on where he or she is in terms of professional level: “Senior DBAs often act as system architects, envisioning the combination of hardware and software required to meet an employer's needs. Mid-tier DBAs often partner with project teams tasked with digging into complex data for insight into company operations. Entry-level DBAs handle routine chores like archiving, optimizing and backing up large database storage volumes.”2 Database administration is a rewarding field but it takes a good amount of training to perform effectively. It's a great time to ensure your DBA skills are up to date, while expanding your skill set. How Training + Certification Keeps the DBA Relevant

There’s been a lot of talk about the changing role of the DBA.  But is the DBA out of a job?  No way according to this recent Forbes article Autonomous Capabilities Will Make Data Warehouses — And DBAs — More Valuable.   According to Penny Avril, Vice president of Oracle Database product management. “DBAs still need to understand where the data lives, what the data represents, and which people and applications should get to see which data.” We just saw this video from Joel Goodman – Master Principal Sales Consultant – who recorded a 5 minute product video explaining core DBA skills for Cloud versus On-Premises.  View it here.   In this video Joel makes 5 important points about the skills and tools DBAs need in whatever environment they work: Oracle Database is the same basic software regardless of the deployment method or location Oracle Database Cloud Service databases are available in only a limited set of preconfigured option bundles Some skills and tool are relevant only in On-Premises Databases Some Skills and tools are relevant only when administering an Oracle DBaaS Cloud Database But 95% of the skill and knowledge is the same regardless of whether it is Cloud or On-Premises Helpful Links: The Oracle Database Upgrade Learning Subscription  training + certification integrated; train and test anytime and anywhere. Digital Badges Modernize Certification Verification, Making Oracle Certificate Download Unnecessary

As technology advances, credentialing programs must be agile and keep up.  Five years ago, we were excited to announce the release of electronic certificates. Rather than waiting 4-8 weeks to receive a printed certificate in the mail, that may never arrive, or may arrive damaged, candidates could simply sign in to CertView, download the certificate and print it when needed. Even better, they could send a digital file or send secure, digital verification through Certview. Five years is an eternity in technology years! Times have changed. Technology has changed. CertView has changed! Digital badges are now widely accepted and often expected as certification verification. Candidates can provide secure verifiable digital badges on social media, in email signatures, on websites, and on digital resumes. Make Every Exam Count - Take the SQL Exam That Gives You OCA Certification

We receive support requests every week from candidates asking for the certificate for passing the non-proctored exam Oracle Database 12c: SQL Fundamentals | 1Z0-061. Each time, we explain that this exam alone does not result in certification. Candidates must pass the next exam in their Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) path to earn a certification and receive a digital badge. This unpleasant surprise results in disappointed candidates who want to receive something tangible for passing a certification exam.   Don't face this same disappointment.  With the imminent retirement of Oracle Database 12c: SQL Fundamentals | 1Z0-061 (November 30, 2019), now is the perfect time to switch your focus to the exam that proves fluency in and a solid understanding of SQL language, data modeling and using SQL to create and manipulate tables in an Oracle Database, AND results in a SQL OCA certification.  Passing the exam Oracle Database SQL | 1Z0-071 earns you the Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate credential and also fulfills the SQL requirement in the Oracle Database Administrator and Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate paths.  We call this 'killing 2 birds with 1 stone," or getting double the benefit from a single action. RELATED:  Prepare Now For Your SQL OCA Certification - NEW The SQL Requirement SQL knowledge is essential to the Database Administrator and PL/SQL Developer roles. Upon its release, exam 1Z0-071 filled a gap in the offerings that fulfill the SQL prerequisite in these paths. This offering has gone on to become the standard. The Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate credential gives a broader, more comprehensive view of SQL, and results in OCA certification. This certification also better fits the defined job role. Let's evaluate each exam further:   Oracle Database SQL | 1Z0-071 Oracle Database 12c: SQL Fundamentals | 1Z0-061 Cost $245 USD $125 USD Delivery Proctored at a test center Non-proctored at your own location Certificate Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate  Not until you pass the next exam in your OCA path Relevance Aligns more closely with defined job role Retiring November 30, 2019 While exam 1Z0-061 costs less and is more convenient to take, the benefit of earning a certification for passing the 1Z0-071 exam far outweighs the lower price and convenient delivery format. Choosing the 1Z0-071 exam on your way to Database Administrator or PL/SQL Developer OCA makes every exam in your path count equally, e.g. 2 exams = 2 certifications.  RELATED: Navigate Oracle SQL Certification: Quickly and Easily Follow the path that makes the most sense! They set a goal in 2017 to increase the availability of fresh water from 50 million gallons to 500 million gallons per day over the next five years and save 17 million gallons of water per day from being wasted. SEWA looked to technology to help achieve this goal. It launched a digital platform to evaluate 450,000 water customers to pinpoint the biggest water users and identify sources of water waste. Data captured from the sensors is mapped to customer account records in SEWA’s Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing application, where it is analyzed and used to generate invoices, estimate service needs, and take steps to stem consumption or waste. Mala Gupta Success Story

Mala Gupta, Founder - eJavaGuru.com, Java Champion at Oracle, Book Author, International Speaker, has a long history with Java. She has learned Java, practiced it, become certified on it, written about it, taught it, and evangelized about it. She has a lot to say about how Java helped elevate her career and how she believes it can help elevate yours too.   Let's hear her story in her own words.   I felt cheated after graduating with a Computer Science degree from college - there was no match between what we were taught at college and what the industry required of me. I also joined a 4 year Computer course with a very reputed Computer training academy during my undergrad, in vain.    My first job as a Junior Java Programmer, mandated earning of Java's Programmer Certification within the first three months. I'm obliged to my employer now. The preparation process enabled me to understand Java inside out! It created a rock solid foundation - letting me master my tool - the Java language - to design and create applications.    After my transition to Server Side Java developer, I decided to take up the challenge of writing SCWCD (Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam); since I was still reaping the benefits of my Java Programmer Certification. Again, I am glad I wrote the exam. I mastered the exam objectives that were covered by SCWCD. It covered in detail how clients interact with server using HTTP - sending, receiving, requests, and troubleshooting. It covered the challenges with Java Servlets and JSP, security and many many other aspects. I'm still using the server side Java concepts that my SCWCD cert helped me with, while working with newer frameworks and tools - like Struts and Spring.   When I look back, I realize that the process of getting certified made me understand all the exam topics in depth - including reasoning out, why and how the language or platform works. I accessed the Core Java API source code, while trying to figure out why some of the Java API behaved in a certain way. To this date, I'm surprised how - even most of the seasoned Java developers haven't accessed the Core Java API source code.   The Java Certifications were relevant 18 years back - they are still relevant - recognized and valued by organisations and professionals, the world over. These certifications are validated by the industry - creators of the Java language. They help individuals to demonstrate their pro-efficiency with Java. Organisations benefit by selecting from a certified pool - to work on their projects.   I actively encourage new students and professionals to earn these industry recognized professional certifications - to get a head start with their career - and remain in the game.   I have been talking to individuals and organisations about the benefits of certifications, and conducting interviews with them: http://ejavaguru.com/index.html#certmatters. I haven't come across even one participant, who doesn't appreciate its benefits.   I am further encouraging the students to write Java Programmer certifications before they graduate from their college - atleast the OCA Java Programmer I certification, if they can't manage to write the OCP Java Programmer II Certification. It will truly help them to stay ahead of the game -    a) Get a rock solid foundation in Java as opposed to shallow expertise with random courses. b) Highlight their industry recognized and accepted expertise with Java Certifications c) Pass technical interviews with ease    I understand that these exams are difficult to pass. It becomes even harder, after you start working, which takes-up most of one's time and resources. Since I've experienced this pain, I've written multiple books on Java Certification with Manning Publications.   Unique points of my book -    a) it uses quite a lot of images and humor to help readers understand the concepts and recall them easily, when they need them. b) 'Twist in Tale' coding exercise help readers to question their understanding, when small changes are applied to small code snippets   I often hear the following statement from people - 'I'm sorry; Certified Java Programmers can't code'.  Firstly, this is an over generalized statement - what are the parameters you are evaluating the programmers on.  Second, with Java certification, one gets to know the tools (Java) really well.  Third, knowing one's tool to write code and problem-solving are related, but different skill sets. A 'skilled' Java programmer, with good problem-solving skills will make her a better programmer.  Compare this situation with a surgery, where a surgeon who begins a robotic surgery, without having the knowledge of robotic tools! Would you prefer to undergo such a robotic surgery? ------------------------------------------------- To summarize: I've benefited from the Java Certification exams tremendously. They helped me to understand the Java language better, pitched my resume to the interviewers by highlighting my certified skills. They also helped me clear the interviews and negotiate my salary. I understand that these exams are not easy to pass. I'm still using the server side Java concepts that my SCWCD cert helped me with, while working with newer web frameworks - like Spring. Java Certifications make people employable by bridging the gap between their existing and required skills. I'm on a mission to pitch this to students and professionals. In my quest to fulfill this mission, I've authored books to help IT professionals and students succeed on industry-recognized Oracle Java Certifications.

How Getting Certified Improves Your Career

In a recent chat with John Brooks, Oracle Content Developer at Kaplan IT Training, the importance of Oracle Certifications came up. John has vast experience working with  IT certifications, we thought his insight would be interesting to our readers and hope you agree.  Knowledge is Power Passing the exam and your grade on the exam are important of course but it's what you learn along the way that provides a strong foundation on which to build a career. The knowledge and experience gained from the preparation process is the real benefit.   "Going through the Oracle certification process lays the foundation for fundamental building blocks of learning Oracle concepts and even theories. Passing an exam doesn’t mean you know any more than the next person; however, it does say that you are familiar with the latest and greatest technologies. It also says you have a solid foundation to build on and you hold an individual drive and passion to expand on those concepts. The knowledge gained from going through the process is difficult to measure, but the amount of information covered and the flow of the information is customized so the learner creates their own foundation by focusing on specific levels of assessments. Oracle measures a candidate's level of knowledge and skills at different levels:" The Oracle Certified Junior Associate (OCJA): Earning this certification level arms you with a fundamental level of conceptual knowledge and skills, and demonstrates your capabilities to a future employer. This certification also shows your potential to progress into OCA level during your early stage of employment, and later to OCP, becoming an asset to any company. This level of certification is currently available for Oracle Database and Java. The Oracle Certified Associate (OCA):The associate level certification ensures that a candidate is equipped with fundamental skills, providing a strong foundation for supporting Oracle products. This also positions candidates to easily begin preparing for the Oracle Certified Professional level of certification. The Oracle Certified Professional (OCP): Oracle Certified Professional builds upon the fundamental skills demonstrated by the OCA. The Oracle Certified Professional has command of a specific area of Oracle technology and demonstrates a high level of knowledge and skills. IT managers often use the OCP credential to evaluate the qualifications of employees and job candidates. The Oracle Certified Master (OCM):This certification level recognizes the highest level of demonstrated skills, knowledge and proven abilities. OCMs are equipped to answer the most difficult questions and solve the most complex problems. The Oracle Certified Master certification validates a candidate's abilities through passing rigorous performance-based exams. The certification typically builds upon the fundamental skills of the OCA and the more advanced skills of the OCP. The Oracle Certified Expert (OCE): Expert level certification recognizes competency in specific, niche oriented technologies, architectures or domains. Credentials can be independent of the traditional OCA, OCP, OCM hierarchy, but often build upon skills proven as an OCA or OCP. Competencies falling under the umbrella of the Expert program range from foundational skills to mastery of advanced technologies. The Oracle Certified Specialist (OCS):This level of certification tends to be implementation-focused. These certifications are built around specialized skills and knowledge. Credentials are independent of traditional OCA, OCP, OCM hierarchy and focus on very specific technologies and skills. Related: Why You Should Care About Oracle Certification Be the Go-To Person  John also highlights an important, often forgotten benefit of earning certification. With the skills and knowledge gleaned from exam preparation, candidates become more versatile, making their skills more valuable. The lessons you learn along the way become your tools; solving or improving day to day on the job tasks. Related: The Most Important Reason to Earn an Oracle Certification "As you go through this journey you are poised for different situations and different Oracle architectures. You not only learn the foundations but you learn new features with every exam. You also learn different architectures which gives you the ability to focus on customer needs and desires that best fit customer SLAs. Your solutions can range from dedicated environments, high availability and even cloud. Having this type of knowledge allows you to think out of the box, expands your creative thinking and gives you solutions that are viable, strong, long-term and allows you to give answers to customers that simply make sense." A Career That Lasts John provided some encouraging numbers that tip the scales in favor of certification. Business News Daily: ranked Oracle Certifications as top  certifications for 2018 in 5 areas: Database Administrator, Big Data, Linux, System Administrator, and Virtualization. CertMag 2018 Salary Survey: According to CertMag's 2018 Salary Survey, certified candidates agree that getting certified has improved their job skills as well as their salaries. 68% of those surveyed agree that getting certified has increased their ability to solve problems 65% percent agree that getting certified has improved their workplace productivity More than 70% of those surveyed agree that they’ve experienced greater demand for their skills since becoming certified. Noted in the same survey, certification can increase earning power. The average weekly income for a U.S. “information” worker at the end of 2017 was $1,393.10. However, among those surveyed who hold just one active certification, the comparable figure derived from the data is $2,078.98.  Pearson VUE 2017 Value of IT Certification Survey:The Pearson VUE 2017 Value of IT Certification Survey also highlighted some revealing numbers in support of earning certification. More than 64% of respondents received positive impact on their professional image/reputation Nearly 1/2 of all respondents received a salary increase, a new job, or a promotion. 40% of respondents indicated that certification helped them to perform complex tasks more confidently 54% experienced the first benefit of certification within 3 months. Finally, the proof is in the personal recommendation. 86% of IT professionals said they would recommend certification to a colleague when discussing a career or advancement in IT. Robert Half: According to a Robert Half Special Report: The Demand for Skilled Talent, 51% of managers said the lack of technical abilities is a common reason new hires don't workout. Certification prepares you to fill that gap. Keep Sharpening Your Skills Related: Get Premium Pay For Your Certifications and Advanced Skills John closes with a sage bit of advice for certified candidates. Recertifying, or upgrading your certification to a new version continually validates your skills and experience and keeps you up-to-date on the latest technology and best practices. Certification shows that you are ambitious and have a passion for learning.

Boost Your Career Opportunities as a Java Developer

From its beginnings more than 22 years ago Java has gone from strength to strength, and today it still occupies the most popular and also most in-demand position for programming languages. Widely viewed by the developer community as the most reliable language, Java enables developers to create software that is compatible with different operating systems. In addition, its stability, depth of features, predictability and strong community have made it a business favorite the world over. There are currently estimated to be more than 9 million Java developers in the world, with its popularity and usage continuing to grow – providing strong indications of Java’s importance in the years ahead and the need for highly trained Java programmers to support the future business world.  Java’s flexibility to span industries Compared to other languages, Java is not only easy to learn, but also easy to use, write, compile, and debug. Its simplicity has helped increase its global prevalence. Java is currently leading the pack in both the Android mobile application development market and the enterprise back-end market. Career opportunities in Java span a wide variety of roles and industries. All of the 500 companies on the Fortune 500 list use Java to a great extent: building application servers, web applications, unit tests, mobile applications, desktop applications and enterprise applications. Yet this doesn’t begin to cover the incredible range of things you can do with Java. For example, many developers use Java to create games and tutorials and, due to its compatibility, Java often figures into cross-language development, meaning that your Java experience can be extremely useful even if you’re not writing pure Java applications. Looking for a really exciting career using Java? Well, how about exploring space with NASA? The agency uses Java for various space missions and also a number of interesting applications, including World Wind, a software development kit (SDK) that lets you zoom in from outer space and examine any location on earth. Want to go into the movie business? Special effects firms such as Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) rely on Java for all sorts of software-based wonders, including sequencing animation scenes. Perhaps you’re interested in saving people’s lives and improving healthcare? Projects like Doctor Online rely on Java for medical chatbots and application modules which enable faster, smoother doctor-patient interactions and empower doctors to make house calls virtually. Java also plays a key role in high performance applications like self-driving cars and is used to build many of the world’s most popular video games and wearable technology applications. In the cloud, Java is useful not only for creating new applications or moving existing applications to the cloud, but its proven ability to work anywhere fits perfectly into the modern mix of cloud, mobile, and desktop applications. These applications need to function the same way no matter where they happen to be running. The Internet of Things also leverages Java in various industrial and domestic smart devices, for example for tracking inventory or measuring the temperature and humidity. Java is now so popular and widespread that there is no shortage of ways for you to find fun and fascinating work. Building your Java career and salary Across all domains, corporations are scurrying to attract top IT talent - and Java developers in particular. The demand for trained and certified Java professionals has substantially increased salaries for jobs associated with Java.  According to Indeed.com, the average annual Java developer salary in the USA is now more than USD100,000, and growing. And far from tying you down to a specific job role, developing Java programming skills is paramount for other business critical positions, such as a web developer, database administrator, Java architect, and IT or project manager. The future looks bright for Java talent. Upskilling for personal and professional success While people who code in Java invariably find jobs almost immediately, the more education and certifications you have, the more appealing you appear to an employer. This not only means higher salary prospects for you, but a wider choice of positions and fields of work. Oracle University’s Java curriculum has a variety of training formats to suit the needs and preferred learning method of any Java developer. Get trained by an instructor and interact with fellow developers in a classroom or via Internet in a virtual classroom. Or if you prefer self-study, the Java Programming Learning Subscription will give you year-round access to hours of high-quality learning content that is constantly updated. You can also validate your skills through Oracle with Java certification, further increasing your job and career prospects. The time is ripe to up-skill, and take full advantage of the Java career opportunities that await you.

The Secret to Choosing the Best Oracle DBA Certification for You

Have you tried navigating the Oracle Certification labyrinth lately? If so, you may have come away with your head spinning! While there are many offerings in many layers of technology for a wide and diverse audience, it may be difficult knowing where to start.  The Oracle Certification program began with Oracle Database 7.3. Candidates chose either the Database Administrator or the Developer track. Much has changed in a couple of decades! The program is now anchored by both our core Oracle Database and our Java certifications, but hundreds of implementation certifications have also been added. This is good news for non-database professionals who wish to certify on one of the numerous Oracle technologies outside of Database, but this makes it more difficult for some to choose the correct certification track.  Matthew Morris, experienced DBA and developer, multiple Oracle certification holder, and respected author and blogger published an article on GoCertify.com in 2015 that stands the test of time by helping candidates navigate this winding river of Oracle Certification options - More than Just Database: A Beginner's Guide to Oracle Certification. While some of the credentials and exams referenced by the article may be outdated, the content stands the test of time. If your certification interest is laser focused on Oracle Database, we can help. Check the decision-making diagram above. Scroll further down for more in depth information on each step in the decision making process, and to see where you can go after you've earned the OCA and OCP levels of certification. I. First, start with your job role - Database Administrator, Developer or Implementer. Database Administrators: Skill set and job role may vary depending on whether you are a "development" or "architect" DBA or more of a "production" DBA. Skill set may include installation, patching, configuration, security, backup and recovery, migration, capacity planning, logical and physical data modeling, database design, performance management, SQL Tuning and troubleshooting in the Oracle Cloud, on premises or both.  Including High Availably, Disaster Recovery and aspects of OS administration.   Database Developers: Skill set may include SQL, SQL*PLUS, SQLCL, PL/SQ, Java, Application Express, database design, logical and physical modeling, and SQL tuning. Implementers: Typically have a strong technical background in the product area on which they are certified and are responsible for implementing or installing this software or certain aspects of the software. Related: Build a DBA Career to Last II. Next, determine which certification path to start. Database Administrators, your next step is to determine which version of certification you wish to pursue. Some considerations are: The version or versions of Oracle Database that your company uses if you are employed. The version or versions of Oracle Database most often specified in job descriptions if you are job hunting. Have you already completed an Oracle Database training course  for a specific version? This is very important. Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) certification requires training on the version that matches your certification or a on later version. e.g. If you have had Oracle training for Oracle Database 11g, you should pursue 11g certification and then upgrade to 12c when appropriate. Training is not required to upgrade to a later version of Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional once you already hold a DBA OCP certification. If you are certified on an Oracle Database release that is newer than that which is used by your company,  you can help define the strategy for the adoption of new features and functions When an older version of Oracle Database is de-supported,  you will be required to upgrade your certification to match a supported version of Oracle Database to keep your certification active. Read the Recertification Policy. Oracle recommends keeping your skills current by attending the latest training courses and maintaining your certification. If you choose Oracle Database 12c R2 (recommended), start here: Oracle Database 12c R2 Administration Certified Associate* If you choose Oracle Database 12c, start here: Oracle Database 12c Administrator Certified Associate* If you choose Oracle Database 11g, start here: Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate* Database Developers will all start in the same place for certification - Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate. From there, you can decide whether to move to the advanced certification. When you get to this point, the same considerations listed above apply. Database Developers start here: Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate  or Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate* Implementers: Candidates pursuing an Implementation role have options under the Oracle Database 12c product. An Implementer's product focus area might vary somewhat compared to a Database Administrator or Developer. Implementation Specialist certifications are available to all candidates but are geared toward Oracle's partner employees. Some considerations: If you work for or wish to work for an Oracle partner, the partner may have product area requirements. If you are seeking this certification on your own, use some of the same considerations listed above to decide in which direction to go. You can also review exam topics to discover the skills required of someone who holds a particular certification. Start here: Oracle Database 12c Certified Implementation Specialist Oracle Real Application Clusters 12c Certified Implementation Specialist Oracle Database Performance and Tuning 2015 Certified Implementation Specialist III. Further considerations for Database Administrators and Developers *An important consideration for both the DBA and Developer paths is that both a SQL exam and an Associate-level exam must be passed to earn the Associate-level certification. Here are the options for the SQL exam: Oracle Database 12c SQL | 1Z0-071: This is a proctored exam that must be taken in a test center. Passing this exam earns you the Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate credential. This exam better fits the defined job role. Oracle Database 12c: SQL Fundamentals | 1Z0-061: This is a non-proctored exam that can be taken online at your own location. Passing this exam fulfills the SQL requirement, but does not result in a certification on its own. It must be paired with the next exam in your path in order to earn a certification. Vouchers for this exam will no longer be sold after May 31,2019. Candidates will have 6 months to use those vouchers to register for an exam at Pearson VUE. This exam will no longer be offered at Pearson VUE or an Oracle Testing Center after November 30, 2019. Related:  Navigate Oracle SQL Certification: Quickly and Easily IV. Now that you've earned your Database Administrator or Developer credential, where can you go from here? Database Administrators can pursue the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) level of certification by completing a relevant training course and passing the appropriate OCP exam.  Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Professional Oracle Database 12c Administrator Certified Professional Oracle Database 12c R2 Administrator Certified Professional Exadata Database Machine Oracle Certified Expert After earning an OCP certification, DBAs can dive a little deeper into a more specific technology by earning an Oracle Certified Expert (OCE) certification or joining the elite ranks of Oracle Certified Masters. Overcome this hurdle with the new Oracle PeopleSoft Applications Learning Subscription. This annual subscription offers 434 videos and 95 hours of training content about PeopleSoft Applications, diving into individual subject areas within topic-based channels. This online training option is ideal for configuration consultants, functional implementers, end users and implementation consultants. Get Training that Coincides with the PeopleSoft Release Schedule “A big misconception is that PeopleSoft has had no new releases since the 9.2 upgrade. The reality is that PeopleSoft now has many more releases than before, usually five or six in a year.” As these new PeopleSoft product features become available with each new release, your learning subscription is refreshed with new training content that empowers you to leverage these features. As a result, your expertise evolves right alongside the product. The PeopleSoft PeopleTools Learning Subscription was released in April of this year with content for PeopleTools I & II, Fluid User Interface and Application Engine. This month, we’ve added Query Reporting Tools, PeopleSoft LifeCycle Management, and Update Manager. Additional new content will continue to be added in months to come. To learn more about what the Oracle PeopleSoft Applications Learning Subscription offers you and your business, we spoke with Nita Brozowski. She became an Oracle University product manager approximately three-and-a-half years ago and now works with PeopleSoft and Business Intelligence products on the applications side. Q: Tell us about PeopleSoft Applications. A:  Oracle is a leading provider of e-business application software purely over the Internet, and these applications are designed to address the most complex business requirements. PeopleSoft Applications empower the user, are easily adaptable, and provide comprehensive business and industry solutions. They enable organizations to increase productivity, accelerate business performance, and realize a lower cost of ownership. Q: What are some surprising things customers may not know about PeopleSoft? A: A big misconception is that PeopleSoft has had no new releases since the 9.2 upgrade. The reality is that PeopleSoft now has many more releases than ever, usually five or six per year. And customers don’t need to do a full upgrade to get to the new features they need. Q: That’s because of selective adoption, correct? A: Yes, that’s right. With selective adoption, customers can take the features they want when they want them, without having to do an upgrade. PeopleSoft is now delivered on a single code line, with single releases continuously throughout the year on “PeopleSoft Images.” Customers are free to decide what features to upgrade.  Q: Why did you develop this PeopleSoft Applications Learning Subscription? A: Oracle University has always been committed to providing training that helps customers excel and get the best performance from Oracle products. Recently, we’ve been innovating how we deliver this training so it meets the needs of Oracle customers and partners. We know how busy they are and that they want to get training when it fits their schedules; this learning subscription provides that flexibility. Q: How will customers use this learning subscription? Skill checks allow you to measure how much you’ve learned and identify areas that need further review. Q: Which types of customers would be interested in the PeopleSoft Applications Learning Subscription? A: End users, configuration consultants, functional implementers – anyone who uses PeopleSoft Applications to do their day-to-day business. Q: What are some skills customers learn using this learning subscription? Oracle Certification Provides Ian Baugaard Lifelong Opportunity to Learn and Improve

Written by Ian Baugaard My certification journey began way back in 2002, two years after I finished my tertiary education and was driven largely by a desire to improve my skills and give me the ability to set myself apart from the crowd in the career market. On a side note, the latter objective has (over time) become less important than the former. Nonetheless, the fact that I had achieved the Oracle 9i Database Certified Professional certification definitely played a role in me landing my dream job at the largest (and best) telecommunications company in South Africa. Related:  Shang Shibo Achieves Amazing Results With OCM After First Doubting Its Value As I went on upgrading my certification to 10g and then 11g, it became clear that the true value of certification was in expanding our horizons by showing just how little one really knows! Technology changes. It’s a fact of life and if we keep on doing things the way they’ve always been done, we stagnate and stop growing. Several features which were exposed during the preparation of the exams have subsequently been implemented in the workplace. Finally I was left with the ultimate test, the Oracle Database Certified Master exam...a combination of skill, preparation and how well one copes under the pressured gaze of Father Time. There were all sorts of the horror stories lying in wait, from those who have long since disappeared because of NDA violations, but they just fuelled the fire. After two gruelling days, I awaited the final result for three weeks...nervous because I thought I had tried to be too smart for my own doing. My results were positive, much to my relief. It truly is the pinnacle certification for any Oracle Database professional and I cannot recommend it highly enough as a test of yourself and your abilities. Related: Liu Denfeng Gives Advice on Beginning Your Own Exciting Journey to OCM Certification Over the next 18 months I continued the path to learn more and more about the various new features in Oracle Database 12c, focusing on RAC, Oracle GoldenGate and Dataguard. I will also say that I failed the latter examination on first attempt. I did not have the training material and built my own course from the online documentation as represented by the exam objectives. This was no excuse, as the current structure of examinations provide an excellent balance of what the documentation says and putting you in real-world scenarios where you have to apply yourself to the situation presented. And ultimately it presented me with another learning opportunity, which I dutifully grabbed and passed on the second attempt. And it doesn't stop there. The drive into the cloud is gaining momentum and along with Oracle Database 18c, there are many more unknown paths to venture down and learn from! So in closing, certification most definitely has value. It’s so much more than the PDF produced upon completion. It’s an opportunity to learn and improve oneself and that is a journey we should all constantly be on. I'll end off with a quote from our former president Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Let's all change the world in our own small way... Create YOUR Oracle Certification success story!

Liu Denfeng Gives Advice on Beginning Your Own Exciting Journey to OCM Certification

My Journey with OCM By Liu Danfeng   I received the OCM congratulations letter three weeks after the exam, which marked a perfect ending to the hard work over this period of time. But I also look at this as the beginning of another exciting journey. What I have acquired during the study is a method of using Oracle but to fully apply it requires continuous practice in work.   I first knew about OCM in 2013 when I attended an OCP training with Oracle University. I was having lunch with a few seniors and was dazzled by all the discussion about the OCP course. While listening to them talking about the nerve-wracking experience of taking the exam, I looked at the OCM as something too far to reach for me. My background was in automobile engineering, but my first job was on Oracle database development. It was my first time to use Oracle and I had to study it from the scratch which was a tough time for me. Fortunately, with the help from my manager and colleagues, plus my own efforts, I settled into the job fairly quickly. For the first few years of my job, I got on well with my work thanks to the knowledge and experience accumulated along the way. However, as the company is expanding its business, in recent years, I started to feel a bit behind in terms of my understanding and application of Oracle, especially in areas such as the running and management of the database. I started thinking about doing the OCM certificate to improve my work performance.   Therefore, I chose an Oracle authorized WDP to receive the technical training, so I can access the resources of an authorized training center while getting the official attendance record. Only with the Oracle attendance record, can I then be qualified to attend the Oracle certification exam. Plus, you get to know a group of fellow trainees who are equally motivated and hard-working. We encouraged each other and progressed together. I had two rounds of the weekend course. The first round helped me to have a holistic view of the OCM leaning system. The second round took place after a period of study. I have found that attending the course with problems I came across during my study has increased the learning quality and consolidated some key learning points, which made further practice more efficient.   My personal experience is the time of the exam has to be decided as soon as possible, then this would push you to power through as the time counting down. This is also the advice from Mr. Hou. The reason is it’s easy for people to get lazy. If the exam time was not set, it would be difficult to get into the mode of exam preparation. The longer the exam drags on, the more tiring it would get, and your family might be affected as well. It took me a while to complete the exam and I wasn’t able to see my children during the time. It was very hard for me being separated from my children and I was often in tears when thought about them. But each time I told myself to be strong and try to finish the exam as soon as possible so I can see them sooner.   Stages of OCM Exam Preparation Exam preparation is a challenge both physically and mentally as it requires a large amount of time and energy. My training overall went through three stages. The first stage was to go through the 9 scenarios for the first time. This was the hardest time for me. I constantly encountered errors but couldn’t figure out why. I was very frustrated and couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Luckily, I had my fellow course mates to help and it took me over a month to go through all 9 scenarios. The second stage was the continuous practice till I could be completely independent of the textbook. I spent the most time on this stage. It was very tiring but it’s also the most rewarding stage. I was looking through all kinds of reference books, official manuals, while consulting my friends and colleagues to solve all kinds of problems. Each time when a problem was solved I felt I made a small step forward. I went through the emotional ups and downs again and again, while telling myself to carry on. I finally was able to absorb the knowledge from all 9 scenarios along with the official documents in my mind as mental maps. This is a process of digesting and synthesizing an abundance of knowledge. The third stage was the intensive preparation right before the exam when I had to go through everything again to check for weak links while pressing on with the practice to improve my speed. This was also the stage at which I felt most accomplished as I was very self-disciplined. As someone who had almost no training on Linux, I was actually able to use all the Linus codes, which was a nice surprise. Gaining Confidence One Month Before the OCM Exam It wasn’t till one month before the exam that I was able to complete all the scenarios without instructions. At that time, I was very anxious about the exam as I wasn’t sure how much speed-up I would manage over a month’s time. But once I’m off the instructions, I found myself speeding up very rapidly so maybe I should have gone off script sooner. During the last month, each day was very intensive as I was trying to get the most out of the training. I was going through all the scenarios every day, on weekends, and every two days on work days. Although my speed was maintained at around 50% just before the exam, I was no longer very nervous about it. Mr. Hou was very encouraging and gave some very useful advice before the exam, while I also kept telling myself to believe in what I know. My mindset was that I didn’t need to be perfect but only perform to the best I can. Overall, my exam went fairly well. I did come across a few small problems but was able to solve them calmly.  Advice on Taking the OCM Exam Here I would like to offer some advice: Regardless your prior knowledge of Oracle and Linux, believe in yourself! Follow the instructions from the teachers and you will be fine. You have to join the “Hong Bao” (红包) Group. It will give you encouragement and help from teachers and course mates. You are not alone – there are many people behind you offering their support. [This group is in China. Find a similar community in your area to help you prepare for the exam and support you through the process.] Once you've completed the 9 scenarios, set the exam date as soon as possible. This will force you to start your preparation and improve your efficiency. The longer you drag it on, the more exhausting it will get. If your situation permits, attend the exam crash course. It will help you to know the latest development in exams. It was during this exam crash course, the teacher corrected some of my wrong operations and answered many of my questions, which really helped me to pass the exam. From when I first started, it took me nearly half a year to complete the database OCM exam. During this time, I went through a lot but also learned a lot. With the dedication and help from the teachers, I made great progress and also lots of lovely friends. I cherish all of this. Looking back the journey, I would like to thank all the teachers for their help and guidance, thank all my course mates for their precious friendship, thank my managers and colleagues for their support, and especially thank my family for their hard work and support. There’s no end in learning and I shall continue with my journey of learning! * This article was provided and authorized by Oracle Certified Master Union. Shang Shibo Achieves Amazing Results With OCM After First Doubting Its Value

My Journey with OCM By Shang Shibo Why OCM? I used to think that OCM is useless. As a practitioner who's been working in core technology for years, I have very rich experience in system design and development. With my own network and contacts, I’m never worried about not being able to find a good job. Especially when people with the certificate failed at my interview. I further believed that the certificate was just a piece of paper and what really counted was the experience and technical ability. I thought it was a complete waste of money to get the certificate. Later on, I went to a social event on technology and joined a Wei Chat group of Oracle professional education training forum. That was when I started to come across some excellent articles by Oracle specialists, such as Pirates’ Wealth Division (海盗分金术) and SQL Analysis (SQL解析). I felt like I was entering a world that I never knew about and you can’t imagine the shock I had. I admired the breadth and depth of the knowledge these people have and determined to further my knowledge on Oracle. OCM provides a very great channel for my further learning. Why Oracle training center? I checked lots of information on-line while choosing a training center. I learned that with Oracle certified training center, students can enjoy authentic training resources from Oracle and the quality of the teaching is ensured. Also, students have to obtain the attendance record from an Oracle certified training center before they can attend the Oracle certification exam. Why face to face training? I knew very little about Linux at the time and I was concerned about this as I registered for the exam. I was worried that I might fail the exam due to this weakness. Even with the instructions, I couldn’t complete scenario 1 – I found the questions very peculiar and this frustrated me a lot. However, I was very fortunate that all the teachers were very encouraging and helpful, otherwise I would have quit back then. At the same time, I also believe that anything with value requires effort to acquire. When there’s a will, there’s a way. Each day, I pressed on with my practice - identify the problem, research the problem, analyze the problem and accumulate knowledge points. I put all the problems I came across in a mental map and completed a diagram after my exam, called OCM Pass Skill Diagram by a Linux Newbie (Linux小白OCM通关技能图谱). During my face to face training, I completed all the scenarios for the 1st time with help from people. Now thinking about it, if I hadn’t attended the face to face training, all by myself, I don’t know when I would ever be able to do it as you wouldn’t have anyone to turn to for help. I made much progress during that time and I received lots of precious friendship. Here I would like to extend my gratitude to Mr. Hou and all my friends at the course! Another good thing about the training is that you get to meet the teachers face to face. Every day, we studied together, and that kind of atmosphere was incomparable to studying at home by yourself. I would like to strongly advise people to take the face to face training if your situation allows, to get the best results! Why the exam crash course? The exam crash course is an intensive training program. It’s the quickest way to get you into the exam mode and complete the exam.  Each morning, we had a Wei Chat reminder to get us started with the training and to remind us that we are not alone in this. Meanwhile, all the coursemates can help each other, learn from each other and improve ourselves. It’s very common to feel down during the time but when you can see all the good friends who succeeded and friends who stood side by side with you, plus all the encouraging teachers, your energy would return! My memory of the exam crash course has its pain but also happiness and I remember it fondly. I still have a long journey ahead and I will continue with the highest spirit! Suggestions for exam preparation Here I’d like to take the opportunity to offer some suggestions: Whichever level you are with Oracle and Linux, don’t worry about it and be confident about what you can achieve. As long as you are following the instructions from the teachers, you will be fine. Don’t think too much about the speed – maintain your own pace. Everyone has his own way of solving problems. Being fast doesn’t necessarily mean a definite pass. Try to read the questions carefully such as the table name, schema, which machine to deploy, which machine you are currently operating and what the SID is, etc. Each time you press “Enter”, you need to know clearly about what will happen next, what might happen next and what you would do if there’s an error. In other words, be calm in the exam and don’t rush through the questions. This probably has something to do with my job in development. I have a very strong urge to control the execution of orders and programs. If there’s anything that’s out of my control, I get very anxious and have to run lots of risk assessment to ensure the risk is under control. The target of the operation is to ensure the smooth running of the system, whereas the development is to ensure that the system can be operated continuously without problem. I worked 6 years in the integration of development and operation and I very much believe that problems are not to worry but what you should worry about is problems that are not controllable. It doesn’t matter when you are faced with a problem, but you have to make sure that you have the solution for it and can control its risk.   There’s also no need to worry when you come across challenges in learning. Keep your head cool and eyes on the big picture. After all, it’s outcome that matters, not the mistakes along the way. It’s easier to think of solutions when you keep calm and remember these qualities: Thorough understanding of the theory, Clear logic and proficient operation. Look at the problem from the basis of the theory to get a clear idea of how to solve the problem. Think twice before you apply any solution to the issue. I would also recommend you to attend the exam crash course to know the latest development in the exam. Conclusion I have learned a lot in nearly two months’ study and training. This hasn’t been an easy journey. There have been lots of challenges and hardships, but I also gained a lot from it. With the help of teachers, I have improved myself a lot and also got to know a group of wonderful friends. I truly cherish all of this. Here I would like to thank all the teachers for their guidance and help, thank all my coursemates for their help and friendship, and especially thank my family for their devotion and support during my training. Success comes from relentless effort and hard work, just like happiness comes from perseverance and determination. All the best, my dear friends! * This article was provided and authorized by Oracle Certified Master Union. For reprint please contact Oracle University and indicate the source.

Follow Skant Gupta's Journey to Oracle 12c OCM

"It's lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself." -Muhammad Ali Skant Gupta started his career, challenging himself to continue to push forward and achieve ever loftier goals. He believed in himself and continues to look forward. Read his account of this journey for inspiration on your own path. I like to take challenges and come out of them with my head high. The memories of my first acquaintance with Oracle are still fresh in my mind. It was during my college days, I took my first step to deep dive into the world of Oracle. Back then, everyone warned me that the path I was choosing was going to be tough and the openings limited, but I was all in to accept the challenge. I started my Career as Junior DBA about 6 years back. The journey to reach Oracle OCM 12c [Oracle Database 12c Administrator Certified Master], OCM Cloud [Oracle Certified Master, Database Cloud Administrator] and OCM 12c MAA [Oracle Database 12c Maximum Availability Certified Master] have been a roller coaster ride. I have recently completed my OCM 11g exam and was preparing for OCM12c. Unfortunately, the schedule for OCM 12c got canceled in India, and I went on and wrote the OCM 12c upgrade exam. After accomplishing OCM 11g [Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Master], I passed OCM 12c upgrade, OCM Database Cloud, and OCM 12c MAA. With this certification, I have managed to attain my motive of receiving higher levels of recognition in Oracle. Oracle Data Guard Administration in Oracle 12c, Oracle Certified Expert in Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) in Oracle 12c and 11g, and Oracle Certified Expert in Oracle Exadata Cloud Database Machine Administrator are some other feathers added to my hat. Focusing mainly on the cloud, database and high availability, Oracle Weblogic Suite, Oracle Exadata and Oracle GoldenGate, I have also specialized in Oracle Database Cloud, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Oracle DBaaS, High Availability, RAC Clusters, DataGuard, Backup/Recovery and Database Migrations. Further, I have also presented at several Oracle user groups worldwide, most recently in the US, the United Arab Emirates, and India. I think I have managed to achieve my goal, but this is not an end. I look forward to exploring the new offerings Oracle has on its plate. Start or share your own certification journey today!

Can You Afford The High Cost of NOT Certifying?

“The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay.”  ~ Henry Ford An investment in yourself or in your team is never a wasted investment. Letting the cost of training and certification hold you back can end up costing you in the long run - as an individual or as a team leader. We all know the (sometimes high) cost of training and certification: Often training is required in order to earn certification, and IT training can come with a daunting price tag. Certification exams are typically priced separately from training, and if you don't pass on your first attempt, you must often pay to take the exam again. There is the investment of time and materials to prepare for your exam. You may need to take time off work. Sometimes there is travel involved which may include airfare, lodging and food. While few professional-level certifications incur all these costs at once, the training, time investment, and exam cost alone can give an individual test taker pause. Managers looking at getting an entire team trained and certified may want to run screaming! So let's flip the scenario. We're all quite familiar with the cost of training and certifying, but what can it cost you to NOT pursue training and certification for yourself or your team? According to Pearson VUE's 2017 Value of IT Certification Survey, a quarter of respondents received a salary increase after certifying. For individuals, one of the biggest costs in NOT training and certifying is the loss of potential salary. This adds up over the span of your career. Foregoing training increases the likelihood of needing to raise service requests for support.  Those who have not been trained and certified can make costly errors. There is also the cost of poor performance and productivity. CertMag's recent 2018 Salary Survey found that, "A substantial 50.4 percent of all Salary Survey respondents report that they use skills “learned or enhanced through certification” several times a day at their current jobs." Finally, a huge concern in today's world is the cost of poor security.  Many of these points above cost time, which can increase your overall project cost and possibly affect customer satisfaction. With this in mind, the question is not whether you can afford training and certification, but can you afford to NOT train and certify? What You Need to Know About When Your Exam Retires

You worked hard, passed an exam and earned a certification. Now you hear it's retiring. What does that mean for you? You're studying and practicing and preparing for an exam. Now you see an announcement that the exam you're preparing for will retire soon after you take it. Should you go ahead and take your exam or not? Is Certification a Moving Target? Technology is moving fast. Technology in the cloud never stands still. Sometimes it can seem like your skills feel out of date even before you've finished building them. While accepting that an IT career involves ever changing and ever updating knowledge and skills, it can be frustrating when something you've worked so hard to earn retires, leaving you wondering about its value. Oracle exam managers regularly review and evaluate exams for updates or retirement. This keeps exams fresh and relevant. Exam managers may choose to retire an exam for several reasons - there is newer technology and a new exam is being developed, the exam is simply too old and based on a product that may no longer be supported, the exam may refer to training that is no longer available, or it just doesn't make business sense to continue to support and maintain the exam. What does retirement mean? Most of the time, when an exam retires, the certification path also retires. This means that no new candidates can take the exam or earn the resulting certification after the retirement date. In some cases, a retiring exam may be only one step in a multi-step certification path. If only one exam in the path is retiring and the certification path does not retire, there will be an alternative to the retiring exam. If you've earned a certification that's retiring, you will maintain access to your ecertificate, logo and digital certification badge. You will also still be able to publish your credentials to a third party through CertView. Your badge template will be updated to indicate that the certification has been retired by Oracle. If there is an updated version of the credential, it will be noted in the badge description.  So, you simply carry on. Your certification remains valid and you promote your certification like you normally would. If there is an updated version of the exam and certification, you may want to take the exam to earn the updated certification. Exception to the rule. There is one exception to this retention of retired certifications. Oracle Database Administrator certifications currently require recertification. Get more information about our recertification policy on our website. What can I do? If you have taken a few months to prepare for an exam, the first thing you should do is take another look at the exam page as you near your exam date. You'll want to be sure that the exam topics haven't been updated. You'll also want to be sure that the exam is still valid and see if it's slated for retirement.  If your exam is scheduled to retire soon, there may be a new exam to which you can shift your focus and preparation. Otherwise, you will need to determine if you wish to earn a certification that is nearing retirement.  You can stay up-to-date with upcoming retirements on the Oracle Certification Website's Retirements page.  The good news for candidates seeking certifications in technologies that have been moved to the cloud is that Oracle Cloud Learning Subscriptions are now available for many areas of technology. These learning subscriptions offer 24/7 digital access to courses and incorporate certification into the experience by offering access to relevant certification exams at no additional cost.  If your certification has retired or is retiring, see what certifications are available through Cloud Learning Subscriptions today.  QUICK LINKS Retirements Recertification Policy Cloud Learning Subscriptions RELATED ARTICLES Oracle Certification Program Policy Change: Recertification Requirement

This is why Oracle's flagship database certifications build on each other, beginning with the Associate level of certification (the foundation of your career), moving on to the Professional level (the bulk of the building), and capping it all off with the Master level (keeping with the building parlance, this might be the luxury pool you add once you've built some equity in your home). Sometime ago we provided a diagram to walk you through choosing the best path for navigating your Oracle Database certification options and begin building your dream career. If you have begun exploring your path, you may have noticed that there is a little more to the story. Once you've selected your job role and the version of Oracle Database certification that you wish to pursue, you still need to select which exam you'll take to fulfill your SQL requirement.  Much has already been written about which SQL exam to choose. Instead of repeating here what has already been written, I wanted to provide a resource to help navigate this choice. (Note that exam 1Z0-047 has been retired since these reference articles were written.) This article really breaks down the decision into very simple terms. An article on GoCertify.com gives a more robust view of each option. Consult an easy to use table in this Oracle Certification blog post. As you make your choice, keep in mind that in building a lasting career, you want to lay down the strongest foundation possible so that your foundation will continue to support your growth through the years. Be sure that you give this step the thought an consideration it deserves. The Single Motivational Factor That Helps Determine Certification Success

Written by Harald Van Breederode, Oracle University Instructor and Oracle Certified Master. He calls himself the Dutch Prutser but in our eyes he is anything but. What's a Prutser? It's a slang for someone who makes a mess of it...hear from Harald Van Breederode on what he believes is the single most important factor that helps determine certification success. As an Oracle University instructor I have the privilege to engage directly with a lot of customers that attend our training courses. At some point during a course I always promote our certification program and ask my students if they are Oracle certified. If they are not, I ask them if they have any plans to change this in the (near) future. Quite often this leads to discussions about the investment people have to make, but also about what the benefits of being Oracle certified could be. As always, it depends! I believe both the amount of effort necessary and the eventual benefits depend on the initial motivation to become certified. Many students state they are really motivated, but over the years I have seen that even though it seems they really are, it is not easy for them to follow through and actually become certified. I think there are basically two types of motivation that may or may not lead to certification success: external and internal motivation. I would like to shed some light on these types of motivation in the context of becoming Oracle certified. Hopefully this will give some insights into the question if becoming certified is for you. The externally motivated student type This type of student is more often then not forced to become certified by their employer and isn’t really motivated on a personal level. The externally motivated student generally wants to spend as little time possible on their certification status, they just want to check the box to adhere to the company rules. They tend to prepare for their certification exam using practice tests, exam study guides or other content that basically tells them what they need to know without spending more time than absolutely necessary to pass an exam. Interestingly, it is quite often that this kind of student complains about the exams because they believe the exams are too difficult or contain too many errors. Often they also believe that exam questions are written with only one goal in mind: to fool them by using complicated language. The externally motivated student often gives up after failing an exam once out of frustration. Eventually they tend to fall behind with their technical knowledge, as working on becoming or staying certified is not experienced as a structured means of maintaining their Oracle related skills. Although the externally motivated student often seems to enjoy working with Oracle technology, they don’t really see the benefits of being Oracle certified. The internally motivated student type This type of student often wants to learn as much as possible about Oracle technology, become certified, and keep their credentials up-to-date. Certification helps them achieve these goals. The internally motivated student prepares for an exam by building their own sandbox environment and spending as much time as possible playing with the software, until they feel confident about the skills they acquired. Generally they don’t use practice tests during exam preparation and they don’t use exam study guides or any other material that simply tells them what they need to know without providing them with any skills they can actually use. After becoming an Oracle Certified Professional the internally motivated student explores the possibility of acquiring one or more Oracle Certified Expert credentials or of becoming an Oracle Certified Master to take their knowledge to the highest level. The feedback I receive from internally motivated students is that they learned a lot while preparing for the exams and that they enjoy answering exam questions that really challenge their knowledge. In general this type of student doesn’t complain about tough questions because they understand that exam questions are written to separate those who are qualified for the job from those who are not. Sometimes they even provide me with new exam questions ;-) Wrapping up Without the right motivation, the road to becoming Oracle certified can be very frustrating and could lead to all kinds of disappointments. Trying to become certified based on external motivation only could in the end actually be a waste of time and effort. Feeling internally motivated to become Oracle certified makes the journey enjoyable, worthwhile and rewarding. The Oracle Certified Professionals I talk to on a regular bases value their credentials and are proud of their deeper understanding of Oracle products. This reflects on their daily job, showing their superiors they are motivated and technically skilled. Explore available Oracle Certifications. Professional Certification is 'More Than a Qualification' Says Prasad Saya

Contributed by Prasad Saya 18th November, 2017  In this post I will share some things about getting the Java 8 certification and what I did after that. Review Java SE 8 Certification Requirements Earlier this year (2017) I had started attending local JUG (Java User Group) meetups. There were quite a few meets covering various topics related to Java 8's features like streams, lambdas and functional style programming. Some of these meets were at the local Oracle Corporation's office over the weekends and there were quite a few talks from Oracle's Java product managers presenting the new features. I got interested with Java 8 that way. I got a copy of Java 8 in Action book, started studying and learning. The input from the meetups helped. As I tried examples and code I started knowing that the Java 8's functional style programming is different from the original Java's object-oriented programming. I decided to learn the Java 8 features thoroughly and take the Java 8 certification exam. Back in September 2012 I had acquired my Java SE 7 certification. The exam I was to take is an upgrade from Java 7 to Java 8 (1Z0-810 Upgrade Java SE 7 to Java SE 8 OCP), and the exam topics are exclusively related to functional style programming – lambda expressions, built-in lambda’s (functions), streams and parallel streams, enhancements to collections and file IO to use lambdas, method enhancements in interfaces and date-time API. Only, one topic was unrelated, the new Java date and time programming.  I wrote lot of examples, made notes by topic and built quiz cards for study. I took the exam on 22nd August, 2017 and passed comfortably. The test had sixty questions and the duration was two hours and thirty minutes. Here is a link to the exam topics and related details. In case interested to see what the certificate looks like, there is an image of it at the bottom of this post. After the exam I refined the notes I had prepared and posted at my web site as quiz cards. Here is the link to the website Java Quiz Player. The quiz cards are free to use for those who are preparing for this exam or just for reference. I had initially created this website when I got my Java 7 certification – then I had developed a quiz app which is a mock test for Java 7 certification exam. I also post Java technology related articles and examples at this site. This website uses Java technologies like Java Servlets and Java WebStart. I found getting a professional certification helpful. It’s more than a qualification. One gets to understand the programming aspects and the APIs well. In work projects one is already aware of the available tools and their usage. One can make better choices in programming or design and be efficient. Studying for certification also means learning new things. This aspect is not just a professional idea it is also a personal one. An Example of Java 8's Functional Style Programming  This month (November 2017) I posted an article using the new Java 8's functional style programming and highlighting some of its features comparing with the previous versions of Java. The article also uses Java 9's Java Shell (JShell) an interactive command line REPL (Read-Evaluate-Print Loop) tool to demonstrate the example code. The article also has the example code using a real functional programming language – Haskell. Here is the link to the article. Certified folks could be leaving money on the table. Increasingly, companies are offering 'skills pay,' which is extra money paid to individuals with specific, in demand skills. Competition is tight in the IT hiring market now. Employers are keen to hire and retain top talent, but lagging pay scales and the snail's pace of corporate changes may prevent some companies from offering competitive compensation. This is where paying a premium for certain, desirable skills comes in. David Foote, author of the post, explains how this may work.  Read the full article. Five Job Categories Increasingly Requiring Computer Science Skills

Higher education students or those considering going back to school to re-skill will be interested in a report sponsored by Oracle Academy which reveals that even in jobs that aren’t traditional computing jobs, employers are seeking computer science skills from applicants.  The report found strong or growing demand for computer science skills in these five job areas which were the focus of the report: Data Analysis Engineering and Manufacturing Design Marketing Programming and Information Technology 65 percent of the fastest-growing and 62 percent of the highest-paying skills in these fields are computer science-related. Students studying one of these areas, are positioned for the best jobs upon graduation by developing computer science skills while following these areas of study. While most postings do request a bachelor’s degree, only 18% of the postings for jobs in this area specifically request a computer science degree. As a matter of fact, the only categories that have significant demand for computer science degrees are programming and data analysis job postings. 7 Reasons OCM Deiby Gomez Thinks Oracle Certifications Are Worth The Effort

Earning the Oracle Certified Master credential is no small accomplishment. A minimum 5-7 years of experience as a DBA is recommended before a candidate considers pursuing this pinnacle of Oracle Certification. According to Deiby Gomez, holding the title is only a small percentage of the benefits a candidate will receive from earning certification. From the experience gained through exam preparation, to the added prestige of the certification title, Oracle Certification has opened doors for this candidate. Let's hear his story in his own words. I started working with Oracle Technology when I was 18 years old, for a Company in Guatemala, I read several books about different fields of Oracle like Administration, Upgrades, Backup and Recovery, Tuning, etc. For me it was really difficult to start working with Oracle technology because at that time I didn't know English. However, after some months I was reading all books easily. First, I got the Oracle Certified Professional 11g (OCP 11g) Certification, then I upgraded to Oracle Certified Professional 12c. In 2014 I decided to travel to the US and pass the Oracle Certified Master 11g exam, and at the age of 24 years old I became an Oracle Certified Master 11g (OCM 11g). At the age of 25 years old I was designated an Oracle ACE Director. I became a speaker at events like Oracle Open World (USA and Brasil) and Collaborate in Las Vegas, NV, USA.  I started to prepare all the topics and scenarios to pass the Oracle Certified Master 12c and at the beginning of 2016 I became Oracle Certified Master 12c (OCM 12c). The hardest certifications I've earned were OCM 11g and OCM 12c. I remember well because it took me several months to prepare for those exams. I practiced each day after work, going to sleep around 3:00am every night. It was hard but now I can say "it's worth it!"  During this time, I also was involved in two other important projects. I was a Technical Reviewer of the book "Oracle Database 12c Release 2 Multitenant (Oracle Press)" and I was co-author of the book "Oracle Database 12c Release 2 Testing Tools and Techniques for Performance and Scalability." I also founded Nuvola Consulting Group, a company that provides Oracle Consulting Services around the world.  With that said, I can say that certifications are really worth the effort and I will tell you why: When you are preparing for a certification you have to read and to practice, a lot. When you finally pass a certification you feel good, but when you think about all the knowledge you gained while preparing every topic and every scenario, you will find that you have a lot of new concepts and you cleared some incorrect conceptions. You are now faster at implementing solutions and you've expanded the syntax you knew before starting to prepare. You have less stress. Stress is a feeling that makes you get sick and impacts your performance at work. One of the causes of this stress is not knowing. If you don't know how to implement a solution or install a product or to fix a problem you experience stress because you are competing against time. The customer is calling you every 5 minutes, and you have to provide the solution as quickly as possible. The process that all DBAs pass through to get a certification expands the DBA's knowledge which reduces the stress of racing against the clock and not having the answer. You inspire others. Once I became an Oracle Certified Master 11g in Central America, I noticed other young professionals starting to prepare to become an OCM 11g. This is really good because you are forcing more people to move to the "next level" and you are improving the competitiveness of your peers. You become a known person in the community. When you are at conferences, you meet people that tell you "Hey, I read your articles!" or "Hey, Congratulations for your OCM 11g!" Of course you get more projects and you can apply for better jobs! When you are applying for a job, the companies see your professional history, they schedule a technical interview, but also they see certifications. Certifications don't guarantee you are an expert, but it helps. HR likes certifications, because certifications help companies get new projects. You can include the certification logos in your email, your CV, your website, your blog, etc. It gives prestige to your marketing material. You enforce the commitment that you have with your customers. Customers trust you. They trust that you will fix the issues or that you will provide solutions. With all the huge knowledge you get while preparing for every certification you are enforcing that commitment. Are you feeling inspired? If Deiby's story has inspired you, begin your own journey to certification today. If you're already certified, tell us your certification success story! Juan Moreno is a relative new comer to Java, but it was an instant attraction. Earning the Java Programmer Certification opened new doors for him, strengthening his knowledge and giving him increased confidence and credibility. Read about his experience in his own words. Hi! I'm Juan, I'm from Venezuela but living in Uruguay! I have only been working with Java for about 3 years, but I started to know it from university about 12 years ago. I was using C ++, but when I first met Java I liked its code portability and its garbage collector. When I formally started working as a developer one of my goals was to formalize my knowledge about the platform so I started to study the official Java certification track, getting the Java SE7 OCA in December 2013, then in March 2015 I got the Java SE7 OCP , which fortunately opened more doors for me to grow professionally in another country. The most recent certification I earned was the Java EE6 OCJWCD and  I’m still studying for many more…. I believe that the certification track offered by Oracle is very important for developers because it not only strengthens the knowledge but also gives us confidence and credibility with the companies for which we provide services. There is not much we can add to this. Juan says it all in his closing. If you're on the fence about certification, go ahead and take the plunge! The process of preparing for your certification exams exposes you to concepts and features you may not otherwise discover or use. All that you learn not only can earn you a valuable credential, it makes you better at what you do. When you have more confidence in your work, it shows. If Juan's story has inspired you, begin your own journey to certification today. If you're already certified, tell us your certification success story!
