gcalctool colours

Spent a little time towards the end of last week working with Rich on bug #157962, to get some colour back into gcalctool. We haven't yet come up with a complete solution, which would involve an option that picked colours from the theme by default (I'm still thinking about that one), but in the meantime you can now copy the cvs-supplied .gcacltoolrc file to your homedir to change this boring old look into something slightly more sexy. (Or, of course, you can invent your own colour scheme to match your GNOME theme du jour.)

Comments:

I have to say it looks very confusing. Compare galculator for example.

I don't get what the different colours mean, and the interface is just hard to parse.

That's why we left it very much as an option :) (Actually the theme used in the screenshots doesn't do it any favours either, the gradients on the buttons make all the colours look a bit more similar than they really are.)

The different colours aren't really intended to 'mean' a lot, any more than they are on most regular calculators... basically I chose the lightest colour for buttons that directly enter a number into the display (plus a couple of special ones like Clr and CE), and the other two colours are just used to group adjacent related functions where possible. But by restricting ourselves to three colours (to improve the chances of a 'use colours from theme' option ever working), it's difficult to enforce that rigidly. The same colour scheme also has to look reasonably sane across all four modes (basic, advanced, financial and scientific), which adds to the complexity of the problem-- the screenshots shown are, for better or for worse, the most complex view gcalc has to offer.

Galculator certainly looks neat, but it's inevitably going to look simpler just because it has considerably fewer buttons. This is by no means a bad thing, but hey-- one thing at a time :)

Haven't looked at the gcacltoolrc yet but can the button text colour be configured individually? I realise you are trying to fit in with the theme but I think more strongly contrasting colours might work better. Hope to try out making my own colour scheme later this evening if I can find the time, I'll post a link here if I get anything I'm happy with.
