I am really pleased that Kevin Sylvester is now hosting Sounds Like Canada. I really enjoyed him as host last summer and love his Kid Koala theme song, "Skanky Panky". I've always been annoyed by CBC Radio's policy of requiring the summer hosts give continual obeisance to the "regular" host and make frequent reminders that they are only filling in. When you're hosting a program for 4 months while the mucky-mucky writes their next book you should at least be the "summer host". Kevin definitely deserves this turn as the more permanent host. Shelagh Rogers was OK as a host. Ok, so she wasn't my favourite host. I found her interviews to be quite trite and predictable and she was often falsely enthusiastic about the interview subjects. At her best she was quite good but most of the time I felt pretty "meh" about her offering. Her position as host seemed to be more about her ascension of the CBC radio pantheon than her particular skills. In spite of all the changes at CBC Radio they seem to be unable to rid themselves of their beloved deadwood. <cough>Michael Enright sucks</cough> Seriously, when Nora Young hosted The Sunday Edition at the end of last summer it was so refreshing to have a host who wasn't so entirely full of himself. He honestly sounds heartbroken in every sign-off that he's being forced to deprive you of his beneficent wisdom by ending the program. It's disappointing that CBC Radio hasn't been able to do a better job of bringing in new blood. It's doubly disappointing when brilliant new efforts like Search Engine are casually extinguished. Unfortunately even the "edgy" DNTO has largely ossified into something which skews only slightly (insignificantly?) younger than CBC's primary audience. Sigh, it's not the best time to be someone who loves Canadian Radio.
