Project Blackbox - Second Life
By pmonday on May 03, 2007
Well, probably to my boss's chagrin, I just went on a tour of Project Blackbox in Second Life. Directions are pretty straight-forward, though I had to do some messing around to find it. The container is in the Sun Pavilion, in the Servers and Storage part.
The exact location seems to be 71, 154, 65 (forgive me if I don't get the coordinates perfect, I'm not a permanent 2nd life dweller) within the Sun Pavilion (find it in the "Search" feature). There are quite a few products to look at and videos to go along with it so give yourself a good half and hour to be in and out of the pavilion.
There are a few interesting things about the container, you can walk through it and take a look at the fans and some of the control rack. Unfortunately, you can't use the rack tool or pull a rack out into the aisle (maybe that's coming?).
You can also push a button to the right of it (the green one) and the container sides disappear out and you can look at the basic rack and heat exchanger layout.
While you're in the pavilion you can also walk around and take a look at some of our servers. Clicking on the servers will give you standard configurations and such. Here is a T2000, my personal favorite to populate a Project Blackbox container with.
It is pretty cool, but does not replace the opportunity to see the live one, which is currently at the DODIIS conference in Chicago!
I think I better get some work done Don't forget to drop by the booth at JavaOne next week!
