Sun Fire V125, V215, V245, and V445 servers EOL'd

In case you hadn't heard, Sun announced the End-of-life (EOL) of the Sun Fire V125, V215, V245 and V445 servers earlier this month. These are the last general-purpose servers based on UltraSPARC IIIi processor that run Solaris 8 or 9.

The last date that you can order these servers is April 11, 2008, and the last date they will ship is July 11, 2008.

Sun is offering several upgrade specials that include Sun support:
As more details become available, I'll try to post them here. For now, if you need more information, contact your authorized Sun representative or partner.
Comments:

Hmm, unless I'm mistaken, there are no equivalents to the v125, v215 or v245 available yet. Can we assume that there will be?

Hi Ceri. I checked with the hardware folks, and they said that no, there is no direct replacement for the V245. They recommend checking out the alternatives listed here: http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/overview/UltraSPARCIIIi-eol.jsp

Do Sun intend to release a new SPARC based system with the PCI/PCI-X bus? We have avoided the Coolthreads systems as they only support PCI-E which is very difficult to get I/O cards for that type of bus.

The would leave the next entry level SPARC based system with the PCI/PCI-X bus being the V490 which is 4-5 times the cost of a V245.

Mick,

Actually, the T2000 has 2 x PCI-X and 3 x PCIe slots

Is there a replacement or suggestion for v445?

Posted by Serkan on February 06, 2008 at 01:20 AM CST #

Serkan, I would suggest looking at a T5120, T2000 or a Netra T2000 depending on what kind of PCI slots and sizes you need. They all outperform a fully loaded V445 in CPU throughput.

What's missing when the v445 is EOL:ed is a server with Catia certified graphics adapter for running Enovia VPMv5.

Currently we deploy v445's fully populated with CPU:s and 32GB RAM and a XVR-2500 for VPMv5.

There is NO replacement!!!!! (Except for an AIX machine of course)

Solaris does not have a Xvfb capable of rendering Catia (OpenGL with overlays). So either SUN must develop Xvfb (SPARC) so that it is Catia compatible or give us a hardware option for rendering Catia.

AIX have a Catia compatible Xvfb.

Any known EOL date for the T2000 platform?

Thanks.

Regarding SUN's recent EOL of V125, V245, V445 class systems. Feel free to contact us here at CCNY. We are a secondary market re-seller and will have a good supply of these units refurbished going into the future.
