final beta of BlogEd 0.7 ?

I have now released what I hope to be the final beta of what I was thinking of calling BlogEd 0.7. It is at the same location as the initial release. Don't forget to clear your jnlp cache before testing it.

Improvements:

  • supports categories now
  • fixes bugs pointed out to me in the previous release
  • properties panel now tests the xml-rpc connection
  • all the remote entries are downloaded in one go on first setup
  • clean up html before sending and receiving it
I think this is quite usable now. I may have encountered a major annoyance with the kafenio html editor component. It seems to freeze when some non ascii characters are typed in. I don't yet know how deep this problem is. Hopefully I will be able to work out the cause with the Kafenio team.

Aside from that unknown this should be good enough for 0.7. I will try to implement the following features before the release:

  • an About panel that thanks all the open source software teams who have developed libraries on which BlogEd relies
  • spelling mistakes and other UI nits that can easily be fixed
  • better support for working with proxies
  • secure https connections?
Ah, well... The more I think about what to add, the more come to mind... Best if you let me know what you think
Comments:

I had to clear my old directory to get the categories listed.

It appears that I also need a way to pick up new categories.

Having said that, category support rocks!

It appears that I need to read. I missed the fetch categories option when I was first looking.

It is a great tool!!!! Now I need to figure out how to use all the stuff ... my own experiment came out better than I thought ... but the text below my post probably came from the tool .. something I forgot to delete??? A tool that I can use on ALL platforms and OSes. Thanks, Jonas D.

If you have used BlogEd before, then the easiest way to get all the categories set correctly for each post is to create a new blog (Blog --> New Blog) and set up the blog properties correctly (meta weblog info, etc). BlogEd will then prompt you to download all the remote entries.

There is also a new menu entry (Blog -> Fetch category list) to fetch all the remote categories.
Any body have a good idea for an icon for that functionality?

Oh yes, "the title of your entry goes here" post is an entry that can be deleted by clicking the bin button. You will find it in BlogEd but not necessarily as the last entry.

It is an example entry that James Gosling placed there to help people get an idea of how to use BlogEd. But when publishing to Roller it gets a little in the way. I think I just need to make sure that it always appears last, then it would make more sense what to do with it.

The tool is great. But it seems hanging when I try to close this! I am using solaris x86! Any idea why is that?
