Dave Roberts of Vyatta - In his own words

I went with a dramatic title this time since I've gotten tired of entitling my podcast-related entries, "talking with" or "chattin' with."

Today's entry marks the last of the three interviews that I conducted at SCALE a few weeks ago.   This one is with Dave Roberts whom I originally met a year ago at the University of Hawaii when we were both there, along with Richard Stallman, to present.

Dave works for Vyatta whose business is "open source networking" ("networking" as in routers, not schmoozing although I'm sure Dave could hold his own in either environment).

My interview with Dave (9:36)  Listen (Mp3)    Listen (ogg)

Dave "I'm happy just to be here" Roberts

Who is Dave?

  • VP of Strategy and Marketing at Vyatta
  • A resident of the Bay Area
  • Holder of 5 patents
  • Once upon a time an HP engineer
  • A gaucho

Some of the topics we tackle:

  • How Vyatta has developed a Free and Open Source replacement for products from Cisco and Juniper e.g midrange VPN, firewalls and routers.
  • How their OS is Debian-based but adapted to be more network-centric.
  • What the Vyatta community is like and how they treat newbies.
  • What hardware do they use.
  • Their next release which is due in a couple of months and what their plans are for 2008.

Pau for now...
