SFD celebration @ Amrita College

SOFTWARE FREEDOM DAY CELEBRATION @ AMRITA

Most of the  students (1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year) of my college are newbies to Open Source and the use/benefits of getting into and working with/on open source technologies!!!

So, my presentation of  SFD event was to focus on spreading awareness on various open source technologies(mainly Sun's open source technologies). It was a great experience.

I was taken aback when i got to know from my mentor, Vipin Sir that many of the 1st and 2nd years do not know about Sun as a company. They were inquiring about what is Sun doing in open source??? (Open Sores rite :) ). So my first presentation on Insight into Open Source Technologies also focused on Sun as a company and why it is into open source, the various technologies of Sun's open source technologies. They were shocked to hear about Sun and its contribution to open source.

My so called Tech. talk was supposed to start at 9:00am sharp. I was ready with my laptop connected to the projector. "But.... where are the students??" I asked myself. It was 9:15 and only 5 students were present for my talk, seeing the situation, I converted my talk to a discussion. I got to know the juniors and asked them what made them attend the session on a Sunday morning!! Yes we conducted the SFD on 21st of September which was a Sunday :) and hence the result of having only 5 students. Slowly by 9:30 students started coming in and i started my presentation on OpenSource technologies. By 9:35 the hall was almost full with 50 students - much more than what I expected.

Students liked my first talk - I just enjoyed giving the talk, it was fun. We then  moved to the lab for a hands on session on installing OpenSolaris on Virtual Box. This was fun. Students like that too!! (that's what i hear). During the installation of OpenSolaris, I gave a presentation on the same - "About OpenSolaris". We broke for lunch.

After lunch were sessions on Drupal - "How to create your own website easily". This was given by my classmates - Aswathy and Divitha. It was fun helping the students creating their websites. The last session was on Java basics which was given by my senior - Abhilash T G.

I was very eager to have a session on Unix basics . But the students were really tired - i guess they had overloaded their brains!!! - it was written on their faces.

So I told them - As Unix basics is very much essential for freshers, we need to have this session. We scheduled this session for the next day - Monday 5:00pm to 6:30 pm. This session was taken by a faculty - Anish Chandran. The turnout for this session was in a great number and most important, students wanted more such sessions!!!!

I just enjoyed my SFD.

All throughout the SFD, my very close friend, Aghoshlal helped me in whatever way he could. It was a huge success in my college.
