Life With Solaris: LWS - VLC support on OpenSolaris

Hi all...

Now you can watch your favourate movie and listen to songs. Life With Solaris has really given the life to OpenSolaris

VLC and many other media players are now supported on OpenSolaris..... :)

When I spoke to Sham yesterday about VLC support for OpenSolaris, he told me about this amazing website that has the IPS, SRV V4 packages for OpenSolaris.

Just look out for the site: http://lifewithsolaris.jp/modules/packages

Installation Details

OpenSolaris 2008.05

Reference: http://lifewithsolaris.jp/modules/packages/index.php?content_id=1

To get the packages on the new Image Packaging System, you need to follow some simple steps:

     Add a new authority

You can add a new authority by running below command. Flag “-O” means using URL to identify the repository. Last word “sunfreeware” will be as the name of this authority. You should have root rights to run this command, or you can use “pfexec” prefix. “pfexec” is similar as “sudo” in Linux

pkg set-authority -O http://pkg.lifewithsolaris.jp:10000/ lifewithsolaris (You need to be root for this)

Now you can install the packages either graphically or using the "pfexec pkg install <package-name>"

Solaris Nevada (SXDE)

Refer: http://lifewithsolaris.jp/modules/packages/index.php?content_id=2

All packages are available at http://lifewithsolaris.jp/uploads/pkg/5.11/i386/.

Since there are many package dependencies, we recommend to use LWSpkg-admin (simple perl script) to install packages.

# pkgadd -G -d http://lifewithsolaris.jp/uploads/pkg/LWSpkg-admin-0.1.pkg

Now, pkg-admin is installed at /opt/LWS/bin.

Question: AFAIK the packages can only be used with the 86-build. Is there a way to get them working on newer build?
Thanks

Hi Dennis.

I did not have any problems in installing the packages (SRV v4 - .pkg) on build 89..

As per the entries in lifewithsolaris.jp, i think we can install on builds > 90 also!!

It is a shame that the website you are referring to, LifeWithSolaris, has only had its IPS Repository up for a short while during autumn 2008 ... or so it seems from postings on the Internet.

I think it is great that this guy (the one behind LifeWithSolaris) has been so kind as to build a version of VLC for OpenSolaris and set up an IPS Repository. Not posting instructions on how to build yourself (so others can follow in his footsteps if they so wish) and then closing down the Repository for access is .... well, annoying, to say the least.
