http://airflake.cachefly.net/gfx/osalt_logo.png

osalt.com, open source alternative is your quick guide to the best open source software.

Open vs. closed
Find open source alternatives to your favourite commercial products. Browse through our software categories and compare pros and cons of both commercial products as well as open source software.

Why open source
By choosing an open source product, the user obtains a number of advantages compared to commercial products. Besides the fact that open source is always available for free, it is a transparent application, in that you are invited exclusively behind the scenes to view all source code and thereby to suggest improvements to the product. Furthermore, every product is covered by a large dedicated network, or community, who is more than willing to answer any questions, you may have.

Some of the major categories under OSALT:
business, communications, databases, development, education & science, graphic applications, internet & networking, multimedia & audio, security & privacy, system utilities, web development

GParted - Partitioning your hard disk

Partitioning your hard disk using GParted

GParted is THE BEST Gnome Partition Editor application. Before attempting to use it, here is some basic background information.

Let me give you a brief insight as to why it is the best partition manager:

FEATURES:

  1. It is a GNOME based partition editor
  2. It is OpenSource
  3. It is based on Debian
  4. The size is just 95MB!!
  5. Since it is OpenSource, it is free to download and use
  6. The images and files are hosted on sourceforge
  7. It has a Live CD Option. i.e., you can boot with the GParted CD and do the partitioning without even having to install the software unlike any other partition manager
  8. You can create, destroy, resize, move, check and copy partitions, and the file systems on them.
  9. This is useful for creating space for new operating systems, reorganizing disk usage, copying data residing on hard disks and mirroring one partition with another (disk imaging).
  10. GParted uses GNU libparted to detect and manipulate devices and partition tables.
  11. It just ROCKS!!!!!
