There are 295 arm’s length bodies (ALBs), known by the public as ‘quangos’, working across the UK government. They provide vital public services, distribute grants, look after national assets, regulate sectors of the economy and act as guardians of the public interest. The vast majority of civil servants are employed by ALBs and they control vast sums of public money with NHS England and the Skills Funding Agency accounting for the majority of the funding.
