Marthon - Good and Bad for Heart

Even though you can train injury-free but Marathon running is not risk-free. Read how marathon running damages your heart.

I participated in a study conducted by Dr Suzanne Miller of Stanford University School of Medicine Hospital on "The Effect of Endurance Exercise on the Cardiac Function of Recreational versus Professional Athletes". She is quoted in the article "If I saw them in the emergency department, I would tell them they had a heart attack". It's scary, so read on!

With 10 more weeks remaining, finally started getting into long runs. And it was a perfect weekend to start because I could not run pretty much the entire week because of JavaOne. And I think it was not a bad start, but the runs are going to get longer.

Here are the good reads of this time ...

  • What's your mantra ? - A word of encourage can add snap to your stride, even if it comes from within.

Week 9 Mileage - PR on Rancho

Mon: Rest
Tue: 8.5 miles
Wed: 7 miles
Thu: 7 miles
Fri: 5 miles
Sat: 5 miles
Sun: 9 miles

I did Rancho PG&E this morning with 48:40 going up (starting from the first parking lot) and a total timing of 1:19:23 (stopping at second parking lot). I started slow and wasn't very happy with my performance but guess my clock showed otherwise :) But I definitely need to do it more often in order to be prepared for the upcoming marathon.

And BTW, this was my first 40 mile week :)

Thank you The Ventian for sending my forgotten Polar F11 last week.

17 more weeks to go and some more articles to read:

Over and over and over, I've heard that tempo runs are the most essential runs to get faster and stronger. So I've started running 20 minutes at a 30 seconds faster pace twice a week. I've started with a short tempo run to begin with but will be increasing the time/distance gradually. For now, I've already started feeling the difference in a week but may be it's more psychological :) I'll report more on this later.
