Podcast: Stop Worrying and Learn to Love Disruptive Tech

The latest OTN ArchBeat podcast series grew out of a brief Twitter conversation.

Several weeks ago I noticed a couple of tweets between Oracle ACE Directors Floyd Teter and Ron Batra, in which they mentioned a great conversation they had had about disruptive technologies. I cajoled them into extending that conversation for a podcast, focusing on the impact of disruptive technologies on enterprise IT and on architects. They agreed, and asked to pull fellow Oracle ACE Director Basheer Khan into the mix.

These three gentlemen are architects, veterans in enterprise IT, and each brings a unique perspective to this discussion. I had fun picking their brains, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the conversation.

Forget the Silver Jumpsuit - Your Future is Developing the Mobile Digital Experience

Science fiction fans of a certain age will remember various depictions of small, hand-held communication and computation devices, including Dick Tracy's wrist-radio, Star Trek tricorders, and other examples too numerous to mention. While silver jumpsuits and flying cars have not yet materialized, today's mobile devices more than fulfill the promise of those scifi wonders. (Actually, silver jumpsuits came and went with several late-70s rock bands, and good riddance. I never had the physique for that particular fashion fart.)

Mobile devices, as you've probably noticed, are as ubiquitous as pimples at a Justin Bieber concert, and they've done such a remarkable job at supplanting desktop and laptop computers for most computing tasks that those so-twentieth-century machines are now often sold as door stops or anchors for small watercraft.

The digital experience for users is dominated by mobile devices, and the demand for those with the skills to create new and exciting mobile digital experiences has surpassed the demand for dermatologists among Justin Bieber fans.

So if you are somewhere along the path towards finely-tuned mobile development skills, you'll want to spend some time with this series of video presentations from the recent OTN Virtual Developer Day focused on Mobile Development for iOS and Android.

There are five videos in the series. You can watch the entire playlist (which will take a little under three hours), or you can view each video individually. Either way, you'll pick up some valuable how-to technical information from some very smart people, some of whom may have a silver jumpsuit hidden deep in a closet -- though I have no proof.
