Top 10 ArchBeat Podcasts for 2014

Launched in March 2009, the OTN ArchBeat Podcast has produced 283 individual programs. Each podcast starts as a 30 minute panel discussion (give or take a few minutes) featuring anywhere from two to six panelists, drawn from my ever-growing list of what I call "the usual suspects." Those 30-minute programs are then cut into roughly 10-minute segments. To date, those 283 individual segments have been downloaded nearly 300,000 times. The recording, editing, and overall production is done right here in my home office.

Consistently one of the most popular Oracle podcasts, listeners have kept OTN ArchBeat in the #2 position for the past six months, second only to the Oracle Database Podcast.

That's the history. But the real purpose of this post is to highlight the Top 10 most popular programs over the past year. Many, many thanks to the panelists who keep the programs interesting, and to the listeners who keep the podcast alive.

Podcast Show Notes: SOA and Cloud - Where's This Relationship Going?

Opinions vary on the relationship between service oriented architecture and cloud computing. Some say SOA is essential to the cloud. Others say cloud is entirely possible without SOA. In this three-part program three members of the Masons of SOA, the group behind the Industrial SOA article series, offer their insight into the issue.

The Panelists

(Listed alphabetically)
  • Jurgen Kress, Oracle EMEA Alliances and Channels, founder of the Oracle SOA and BPM community, the Oracle WebLogic Partner Community, and the global Oracle Partner Advisory Councils.
    Twitter Blog LinkedIn Facebook
  • Hajo Normann, SOA / BPM Lead for ASG at Accenture, Oracle ACE Director
Twitter Blog LinkedIn Oracle ACE Director
  • Guido Schmutz, Technology Manager for SOA/BPM and Architecture Board at Trivadis, Oracle ACE Director
Twitter Blog LinkedIn Oracle ACE Director

The Conversation

  • Listen to Part 1 (program #244): What is the relationship between SOA and Cloud Computing? How is that relationship changing? Is the Cloud changing SOA?
  • Listen to Part 2 (program #245): What effect does the ease of acquiring services in the cloud have on the existence of development silos? What role can SOA principles play in bridging those silos?
  • Listen to Part 3 (program #246): Many services suffer from poor architecture, say these experts. There is a better way.

Here's the list of the Top 10 items posted on the OTN ArchBeat Facebook Page for the week of January 13-20, 2013.

  1. Architect Poll: What's Your Title?
It has been my observation that among the participants at OTN Architect Day events only about 30% have titles or are in roles that include the word "architect." Does the same hold true for followers of this page? Let's find out. Does your role, title, or job description include the word "architect?"
  2. Automate WebLogic Installation and Configuration | René van Wijk
Oracle ACE René van Wijk's example uses JRockit, WebLogic Server, Oracle Service Bus, and the Repository Creation Utility to illustrate how to create automation scripts for setting up middleware environments.
  3. How To Implement a Gapless Sequence in ADF BC | Andrejus Baranovskis
"We all know how to insert new records using ADF BC," says Oracle ACE Director Andrejus Baranovskis. "But if you have a sequence in the DB for a primary key attribute and there is a requirement to make sure assigned sequence values are always gapless - few extra steps are needed." Don't worry, Andrejus shows you how in this post.
  4. Oracle Fusion Middleware Partner Community Forum 2013 | Guido Schmutz
Oracle ACE Director Guido Schmutz met the co-authors for his OSB cookbook at the Oracle Fusion Middleware Partner Community Forum in 2011. What might develop when you expand your network at this year's event in Faro, Portugal, February 19-20, 2013. You're going, right? Right?

  8. Oracle Enterprise Manager at Collaborate13 | Joe Diemer
If you're attending Collaborate 13 in April and you're interested in Oracle Enterprise Manager, you'll find Joe Diemer's extensive list of OEM sessions at Collaborate very useful indeed.
  9. "GlassFish for Business" Updates - GlassFish 3.1.2 and 2.1.1 Patch Releases | The Aquarium
"You might consider these releases minor," says Reza Rahman, "but to operations they're the crucial ones - highly compatibles with timely fixes (some of which came as a result of customer escalations)."
  10. Roadmaps and Guardrails
IT governance is a touchy subject. Few architects would argue the importance of at least some form of governance, so why did five minutes of research on Google Trends confirm that interest in IT governance has steadily declined since 2004?

ArchBeat Link-o-Rama for November 8, 2012

Thought for the Day

"(When) asking skilled architects…what they do when confronted with highly complex problems…(they) would most likely answer, 'Just use Common Sense.' (A) better expression than 'common sense' is 'contextual sense' — a knowledge of what is reasonable within a given content. Practicing architects through eduction, experience and examples accumulate a considerable body of contextual sense by the time they're entrusted with solving a system-level problem…"

ArchBeat Link-o-Rama Top 10 for November 1, 2012

Hurricane Sandy Edition

Power outages in the Cleveland area made it impossible to publish posts on Tuesday and Wednesday. In my neighborhood most are still without power. The sound of howling winds that dominated on Monday and Tuesday has been replaced by the sound of of portable generators. My internet connection was restored only after AT&T U-Verse crewmen hooked up a portable generator to power the relay station up the street. Bear in mind that Cleveland is 500 miles from the Atlantic coast.

Thought for the Day
