OTN Virtual Technology Summit Middleware Track: Data Integration and Analytics

The middleware track for the next Oracle Technology Network Virtual Technology Summit consists of two completely different sub-tracks:

Yesterday's post featured the agenda for the Open Source and Integration sub-track. This post features the agenda for the Data Integration and Analytics sub-track.

In this post I want to focus on the agenda for the Open Source and Integration track, which covers WebLogic, Coherence, Maven and Java EE. I'll provide detail on the Data Integration and Analytics track in an upcoming post.

HOL: Real-Time Data Replication to Hadoop using GoldenGate 12c Adaptors Oracle GoldenGate 12c is well known for its highly performant data replication between relational databases. With the GoldenGate Adaptors, the tool can now apply the source transactions to a Big Data target, such as HDFS. In this session, we'll explore the different options for utilizing Oracle GoldenGate 12c to perform real-time data replication from a relational source database into HDFS. The GoldenGate Adaptors will be used to load movie data from the source to HDFS for use by Hive. Next, we'll take the demo a step further and publish the source transactions to a Flume agent, allowing Flume to handle the final load into the targets.

HOL: Bringing Oracle Big Data SQL to Oracle Data Integration 12c Mappings Oracle Big Data SQL extends Oracle SQL and Oracle Exadata SmartScan technology to Hadoop, giving developers the ability to execute Oracle SQL transformations against Apache Hive tables and extending the Oracle Database data dictionary to the Hive metastore. In this session we'll look at how Oracle Big Data SQL can be used to create ODI12c mappings against both Oracle Database and Hive tables, to conbine customer data held in Oracle tables with incoming purchase activities stored on a Hadoop cluster. We'll look at the new transformation capabilities this gives you over Hadoop data, and how you can use ODI12c's Sqoop integration to copy the combined dataset back into the Hadoop environment.

An Introduction to Oracle Enterprise Metadata Manager This session takes a deep technical dive into the recently released Oracle Enterprise Metadata Manager. You’ll see the standard features of data lineage, impact analysis and version management applied across a myriad of Oracle and non-Oracle technologies into a consistent metadata whole, including Oracle Database, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle Business Intelligence and Hadoop. This session will examine the Oracle Enterprise Metadata Manager "bridge" architecture and how it is similar to the ODI knowledge module. You will learn how to harvest individual sources of metadata, such as OBIEE, ODI, the Oracle Database and Hadoop, and you will learn how to create OEMM configurations that contain multiple metadata stores as a single coherent metadata strategy.

Stewart Bryson, Oracle ACE Director, Owner and Co-founder, Red Pill Analytics

You'll find an extensive list of additional resources for these sessions here, including hands-on lab guides and other information you'll want to access before the event.

Top 10 ArchBeat Podcasts for 2014

Launched in March 2009, the OTN ArchBeat Podcast has produced 283 individual programs. Each podcast starts as a 30 minute panel discussion (give or take a few minutes) featuring anywhere from two to six panelists, drawn from my ever-growing list of what I call "the usual suspects." Those 30-minute programs are then cut into roughly 10-minute segments. To date, those 283 individual segments have been downloaded nearly 300,000 times. The recording, editing, and overall production is done right here in my home office.

Consistently one of the most popular Oracle podcasts, listeners have kept OTN ArchBeat in the #2 position for the past six months, second only to the Oracle Database Podcast.

Podcast Show Notes: Redefining Information Management Architecture

Nothing in IT stands still, and this is certainly true of business intelligence and information management. Big Data has certainly had an impact, as have Hadoop and other technologies. That evolution was the catalyst for the collaborative effort behind a new Information Management Reference Architecture. The latest OTN ArchBeat series features a conversation with Andrew Bond, Stewart Bryson, and Mark Rittman, key players in that collaboration. These three gentlemen know each other quite well, which comes across in a conversation that is as lively and entertaining as it is informative. But don't take my word for it. Listen for yourself!

The Panelists

(Listed alphabetically)
  • Andrew Bond, head of Enterprise Architecture at Oracle
    Twitter LinkedIn
  • Oracle ACE Director Stewart Bryson, owner and Co-Founder of Red Pill Analytics
Twitter Blog LinkedIn Oracle ACE Director
  • Oracle ACE Director Mark Rittman, CIO and Co-Founder of Rittman Mead
Twitter Blog LinkedIn Oracle ACE Director

The Conversation

  • Listen to Part 1: The panel discusses how new thinking and new technologies were the catalyst for a new approach to business intelligence projects.
  • Listen to Part 2: Why taking an "API" approach is important in building an agile data factory.
  • Listen to Part 3: Shadow IT, "sandboxing," and how organizational changes are driving the evolution in information management architecture.

Oracle Big Data Appliance Case Study: Using Big Data to Analyze Cancer-Genome Relationships

Tom Plunkett, Lead Author of the Oracle Big Data Handbook

What does it take to build an award winning Big Data solution? This presentation takes a deep technical dive into the use of the Oracle Big Data Appliance in a project for the National Cancer Institute's Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. The Frederick National Laboratory and the Oracle team won several awards for analyzing relationships between genomes and cancer subtypes with big data, including the 2012 Government Big Data Solutions Award, the 2013 Excellence.Gov Finalist for Innovation, and the 2013 ComputerWorld Honors Laureate for Innovation. [30 mins]

Getting Value from Big Data Variety

Richard Tomlinson, Director, Product Management, Oracle

Big data variety implies big data complexity. Performing analytics on diverse data typically involves mashing up structured, semi-structured and unstructured content. So how can we do this effectively to get real value? How do we relate diverse content so we can start to analyze it? This session looks at how we approach this tricky problem using Endeca Information Discovery. [30 mins]

How To Leverage Your Investment In Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Within a Big Data Architecture

Oracle ACE Director Kevin McGinley

More and more organizations are realizing the value Big Data technologies contribute to the return on investment in Analytics. But as an increasing variety of data types reside in different data stores, organizations are finding that a unified Analytics layer can help bridge the divide in modern data architectures. This session will examine how you can enable Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) to play a role in a unified Analytics layer and the benefits and use cases for doing so. [30 mins]

Oracle Data Integrator 12c As Your Big Data Data Integration Hub

Oracle ACE Director Mark Rittman

Oracle Data Integrator 12c (ODI12c), as well as being able to integrate and transform data from application and database data sources, also has the ability to load, transform and orchestrate data loads to and from Big Data sources. In this session, we'll look at ODI12c's ability to load data from Hadoop, Hive, NoSQL and file sources, transform that data using Hive and MapReduce processing across the Hadoop cluster, and then bulk-load that data into an Oracle Data Warehouse using Oracle Big Data Connectors.

We will also look at how ODI12c enables ETL-offloading to a Hadoop cluster, with some tips and techniques on real-time capture into a Hadoop data reservoir and techniques and limitations when performing ETL on big data sources. [90 mins]
