Show Notes: SOA Governance First Steps
By Bob Rhubart-Oracle on May 26, 2011
A great many organizations have some sort of SOA initiative underway. But how many have adopted a "hope it all works out" strategy rather than implementing some form of governance to insure that all that SOA stuff doesn't end up in the weeds? The mere mention of governance to some people carries connotations of Darth Vader. Others operate under the lingering perception that SOA governance is a process so complex as to induce adult whimpering.
This week's ArchBeat Podcast launches a three-part discussion of SOA Governance First Steps, featuring a panel of people with the expertise to make a convincing argument that getting started with an effective SOA governance program is easier and far less frightening than you think. The panel for this program includes:
- Cathy Lippert is director of product management for Oracle SOA Governance [Linkedin | Blog]
- Mark Dutra is a consulting director with Oracle Consulting Services [LinkedIn]
- Bruce Bailey is an Oracle Fusion Middleware sales consultant [LinkedIn]
- Listen to Part 1:
Even for organizations that are banking on SOA, SOA governance remains a largely informal process. Bad idea.
- Listen to Part 2:
Wikis and spreadsheets are great tools -- but not for SOA governance. The panel talks about the importance of maintaining and carefully managing an inventory of SOA assets.
- Listen to Part 3:
The panel discusses the connection between a well-managed inventory of SOA assets, project delivery, and high-level architecture.
At a few points in the discussion Cathy, Mark, and Bruce mention "O.E.R." Those initials stand for Oracle Enterprise Repository. One of the hazards of getting people together for the kind of casual conversations that I strive for in the ArchBeat Podcast is that they sometimes do things that make product marketing people crazy, like using initials or acronyms instead of full product names. No harm, no foul.
