Great Week For Oracle Apps Customers

Update on Oracle Applications at Oracle OpenWorld 2011

Enter the Fusion Nation

There are many customers using Oracle Fusion Applications today. A large amount of knowledge behind Oracle Fusion Applications exists around the world—within Oracle strategy, development and consulting and outside Oracle in User Groups and Systems Integrators.

Showcasing this, and a small sampling of these individuals is the purpose of the Oracle Fusion Applications “Fusion Nation” program @ #oow11 this week.

How to Find Them

Members of the Fusion Nation team are circulating in and around Moscone Center clad in the red vests and bags. Part of the mission was making these people visible.M ission accomplished. Steve Miranda just announced this program during the Oracle Applications General Session.

Why You Should Care

Every member of this program has had dedicated experience in Oracle Fusion Applications. Each of them also has a perspective. They’re prepared to talk to you—so if you’re #oow11 this week find one of these people, outside sessions, on the street, on the demo floor—and ask them the questions you want answers to.

These questions can be tactical “…which sessions should I attend?” or strategic “we’re considering Fusion Applications but aren’t sure…what can we expect and how can we prepare?”

Now it’s your turn.

Oracle Fusion Applications on the DEMOGrounds @ Oracle OpenWorld 2011

The Oracle OpenWorld DEMOGrounds can sometimes be daunting. It’s also an important part of every Oracle OpenWorld experience. A specific place you can go and see the products in action, have a 1:1 conversation with a product expert about your specific situation and what Oracle Fusion Applications could mean to you.

Fusion Applications in the DEMOGrounds – What to Expect and When to Go

This year you’ll find a total of 24 fixed Oracle Fusion Applications demos in the DEMOGrounds. 22 of these are prominently in a dedicated Oracle Fusion Applications area—across the front of the Oracle Applications and Industries area. In addition to the 24 with fixed locations you’ll also have the opportunity to see live demos of Oracle Fusion Applications mobile apps which will be roaming the floor.

Oracle OpenWorld Tip: We do expect the Oracle Fusion Applications demos to be busy, especially during dedicated DEMOGrounds times. You might consider finding an open time when you have a break during the course of the day to visit.

Major changes versus last year:

  1. Oracle Applications, including Fusion Applications, demos are located in Moscone West this year. A large number of Oracle Applications sessions are in Moscone West so this is a big improvement.
  2. Last year Oracle Fusion Applications demos were interspersed across the demo area to make sure that Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Siebel, et. al. customers were sure to see what was happening around Fusion Applications too. This year Fusion Applications will have its own dedicated area on the floor so they will be easier to find and it will be easier to walk around and see various demos from different product families in the Fusion Applications suite.
  3. Look for Fusion Applications experts roaming these areas with mobile devices featuring Fusion Applications on-the-go capabilities. Look for them and ask them for a demo.

Finding Fusion Applications in the DEMOGrounds

Here’s a map of the Moscone West DEMOGrounds. The Oracle Applications area is in the back and the Fusion Applications pods are spread across the front with the Information Booth in the middle. You can also see the Fusion Applications CRM and HCM pods in the Cloud Zone on the left-hand side. For those interested in managing the lifecycle of Oracle Fusion Applications we have co-located an Enterprise Manager pod focused on Fusion Applications (in purple). Navigating Fusion Applications Product Family Sessions

I won’t get into the details about every session for every product family. You can catch similar posts and pointers from the respective product family teams like Human Capital Management and Customer Relationship Management on their hot topics. However, I can provide an overview of how each of the Fusion Applications product families have allocated their sessions so you know what to look for and can plan your week.

Oracle OpenWorld Tip: When you hear an Oracle speaker reference “Product Families” they’re talking about business solution areas such as Financials, Human Capital Management, etc. “Product Line” is a reference to application suites such as Oracle Fusion Applications, E-Business Suite, Siebel, JD Edwards, etc.

Oracle Fusion Applications 11g

The number of sessions varies by product family, but here is the general framework—there is some rhyme and reason to it:

Oracle Fusion “X” Overview, Strategy and Roadmap Sessions

This is where you’ll get the overall strategy, scope and direction for a particular Oracle Fusion Applications product family. All of these sessions take place on Tuesday afternoon. They start in the slot following the Oracle Fusion Applications Overview session at 1:15 pm. There’s a standard naming convention for each overview session to help you find them. Also, you may want to check out our overall recommendations for Tuesday, October 4th.

Co-Existence Focused Sessions

Co-Existence of Oracle Fusion Applications with existing applications is a key design principle. Just like last year you will continue to see a large portion of the program dedicated to this topic. These sessions drill into specifics around how products within the Fusion Applications product family and the product family overall can add strategic value to the investments you already have in place. The term “co-existence” is present in every solution session title to help you find them.

Solution Sessions

If you attended Oracle OpenWorld 2010 this is probably one of the bigger changes in the program. You’ll find more detailed sessions and specific drill-down on particular products or solution areas. From Oracle Fusion Customer Hub, part of the Fusion CRM product family to Oracle Fusion Distributed Order Orchestration, part of the Fusion Supply Chain Management family these sessions will give you the specifics you want. Getting oriented first with the overviews is still recommended, but feel free to dive as deep as you want. Also, check out the Meet the Experts program if you have specific questions and want to talk to someone about your specific situation.

Answers to the Top Ten Questions

We know that attending conference sessions answers some questions and generates even more. For this reason most product families have a “Top 10” session in their programs to address the frequently asked questions. Many of these tend to be held as a panel, so it’s nice to get a break from PowerPoint slides and hear different perspectives from customers and partners.

Customer Adoption and Experiences Sessions

A year after Fusion Applications’ coming out party at Oracle OpenWorld 2010 this is by and far the biggest change you’ll see. Throughout keynotes, general sessions, solution sessions, et. al. you’ll be seeing and hearing from Fusion Applications customers. There is an overall session, 17221: Oracle Fusion Applications: Adoption and Deployment Overview where, in extreme detail, you’ll hear about who, why and how customers are adopting Fusion Applications and using them today. That session happens at the cross-Fusion Applications level. At the product family level I strongly recommend you search out these sessions and you’ll hear focused discussions on adoption of Fusion Applications by product family. Look for “Adoption and Experiences” in the title.

Finding Fusion Applications Sessions and “Fusion Applications Hot Spots”

Looking up a session’s location in Content Catalog tool or Schedule Builder is still recommended. You can also look them up in this Focus On document for Fusion Applications. But if you’re coming to Oracle OpenWorld with Fusion Applications as one of your major interests we’ve tried to minimize your walking time between sessions. “Fusion Applications Hot Spots” is not an official term, so you won’t find any signs or banners but the majority of them will be run in a select number of rooms—primarily on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Moscone West. You can find a map of these rooms, and recommendations for key strategy and applications technology sessions in this post.

Stay tuned for more, coming soon.

Overall Fusion Applications Recommendation – Buckle Up for Tuesday, October 4th

Recommended schedule for Tuesday, October 4th

Tuesday is a big day for Oracle Fusion Applications. The following sequence is intended to kick the day off with the big picture and then allow folks to drill deeper and deeper, based on specific Fusion Applications interests throughout the day:

10:15 am – 11:15 am – Oracle Applications General Session

Following the Tuesday morning keynotes attend the Oracle Applications General Session in Hall D, the Main Keynote Hall. Moving this session to the keynote hall is a great move as we just couldn’t get enough people into an oversized room in Moscone West last year. You’ll hear from the GMs from each Oracle Applications product line and their perspective on how it all fits together.

11:45 am – 12:45 pm – Oracle Fusion Applications General Session

Head over to Moscone West, 2002/2004 to catch the Fusion Applications General Session. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. This session sold out in 2010. While you’ll find some Fusion Applications session taking place on Monday this is the core overview session for the product line and the place to find out more about the Oracle Fusion Applications strategy--what went into it, what to expect and where it’s headed. Due to anticipated demand this session will be offered twice, with the repeat Wednesday at 11:45.

1:15 pm – 6:00 pm – Fusion Application Product Family Overviews

The 1:15pm session slot kicks off a series of Product Family (HCM, SCM, FIN…) overviews that run through the end of the day. These aren’t the only Fusion Applications sessions running during these times, just the overviews

1:15 pm – 2:15 pm

14158: Oracle Fusion Procurement Overview, Strategy, and Roadmap

17460: Oracle Fusion Project Portfolio Management Overview, Strategy, and Roadmap

18200: Oracle Fusion Customer Relationship Management Overview, Strategy, and Roadmap

2:15 pm – 3:30 pm Dedicated Demogrounds – Oracle Fusion Applications in Moscone West

Oracle Fusion Applications Strategy & Technology Sessions @ Oracle OpenWorld 2011

In the kickoff, Big Picture, blog I mentioned that there are 53 sessions in the Fusion Applications track. These are sessions being led by Fusion Applications strategy and development leaders. In the next few posts I’ll break down the layout of the 53 to help you plan your Fusion Applications experience.

Oracle OpenWorld Tip: The Content Catalog tool is a good way to get an overview of what’s going to be covered—even if you’re not going to Oracle OpenWorld this year. The Schedule Builder tool is for registered attendees and can help you lock down your calendar each day.

Moscone West Level 3 "Hot Spots"

The 53 sessions are allocated across the seven product families (Human Capital Management, Customer Relationship Management…) plus a cross-Fusion Applications category which includes strategic topics like User Experience, Adoption and Business Intelligence as well as key applications tools and technology sessions that should be of interest to anyone working on their Fusion Applications roadmap.

Oracle Fusion Applications Strategy and Technology Sessions

What are Fusion Applications all about?    How do you integrate them?    Who’s using them and why?    How will end-users be impacted and will they like it?    How do I secure them?    How can they help us make better decisions?  That’s what sessions in this category are all about. Here are the topics covered and quick commentary from me on what you can expect:

18582: Fusion Applications – Overview, Strategy and Roadmap

Pre-registration is strongly recommended. This session sold out in 2010. This is the core overview session for the product line and the place to find out more about the Oracle Fusion Applications strategy—what went into it, what to expect and where it’s headed. Due to anticipated demand this session will be offered twice.

18700: The Oracle Fusion Applications User Experience: Transforming Insight into Action

More often than not, when people see Fusion Applications they “get it.” This session, hosted by leaders from the Oracle User Experience team will cover the extensive research that went into the Fusion Applications project, their findings and how the results ended up in the products. Not enough? Hear from customers themselves on what Fusion Applications mean to them. Also, you’ll get an inside look into key design trends that may find their way into future releases of Fusion Applications and the products you have today.

12753: Application Integration for Oracle Fusion Applications

A new topic for 2011. We fielded many questions on this topic last year and created a session dedicated to it. You’ll hear how some of Fusion Applications’ core design principles and technologies accelerate the task of integration and how Oracle’s integration solutions can be applied.

17200: Oracle Fusion Applications: Security Out of the Box

Similar to integration, the topic of securing Fusion Applications drove a lot of conversations last year and warranted its own session. Technically, find out how it works. Functionally, you’ll hear how Fusion Applications’ security principles help deliver a role-based experience.

18580: Metrics That Matter for Your Business: Analytics for Oracle Fusion Applications

18581: Innovation in BI and Applications: Analytics for Oracle Fusion Applications

18580 and 18581 are a packaged set of session focusing on Business Intelligence within Fusion Applications. 18580 addresses the functional what/how and why topics and 18581 takes a more technical approach uncovering how and where business intelligence actually gets embedded into the applications. They’re conveniently scheduled one after another on Wednesday with the Wednesday PM keynote in between.

17201: An Introduction to Oracle Fusion Functional Setup Manager

You’ve made the decision to purchase Fusion Applications—now what? That’s the role of Functional Setup Manager. This was yet another popular topic last year and seeing this session in the 2011 program was a common request from members of the Oracle Applications Facebook community. Also, don’t miss their demo in the Moscone West DEMOGrounds, station W-036 in the Fusion Applications area.

17220: Oracle Fusion Applications: Technology Essentials Overview

If you’ve ever seen Nadia Bendjou’s “Top 10 Things You Can Do to Prepare for Fusion Applications” presentation then you can consider this the perfect sequel. In this session Nadia will cover the key technologies that went into Oracle Fusion Applications and will give you a clear understanding of what an Oracle Fusion Applications environment would look like in your datacenter.

17221: Oracle Fusion Applications: Adoption and Deployment Overview

I’ve seen this presentation in reviews as it has come together over the past few month and recommend that you pre-register for this session now. Right now. Don’t wait. You’ll be hearing a lot about and from Oracle Fusion Applications customers at Oracle OpenWorld this year—but this session is, in my opinion, going to be so information-rich about who’s using Fusion Applications, why, and how that it’s not to be missed.

17202: Application Lifecycle Management for Oracle Fusion Applications

Across the board, this year’s program goes deeper into Fusion Applications than ever before. What does it take to own Fusion Applications? Installation—patching—backup—scale-out…this session, a new addition to the program, is designed to answer the key questions and cover the key scenarios you need to know about.

Moscone West – The “Fusion Applications Hot Spots”

The “Fusion Applications Hot Spots” is not an official term, so you won’t find any signs or banners. But to make things as easy as possible for customers looking to attend Fusion Applications sessions the majority of them will be run in a select number of rooms—primarily on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Moscone West.

Moscone West Level 2 "Hot Spots"

Have an interest in a particular Fusion Application product family like CRM, Supply Chain or Human Capital Management? Stay tuned to this blog and I’ll cover some overall navigation tips for the product families in another post very soon.

Meet the Oracle Fusion Applications (and Other) Experts

This is one in a series of blog posts intended to help maximize your experience @ Oracle OpenWorld 2011—with a focus on Oracle Fusion Applications. If you haven’t yet, you may want to get “The Big Picture" first.

Here’s how it usually happens

  • You attend a conference because you have questions
  • Some questions are answered during session(s)—even more are generated
  • At the close of the presentation you go up to the front of the room, wait your turn in line to speak to the presenter and, after waiting for 3-5 minutes you get 30-50% of what you were hoping for

It’s nobody’s fault. They’re clearing the room for the next session, you have a very specific question about your scenario, you find out that you should talk to “X” instead, the presenter has to rush off to present at another session 10 blocks away…Caveat: Our lounge doesn't look quite this cool

The Solution

Oracle Applications Meet the Experts can be of significant value to you whether you’re trying to understand more about Oracle Fusion Applications or have practical, pragmatic or even “what if” questions about your current applications. The Meet the Experts program is located in the Oracle Applications Lounge, Moscone West Level 2.

It’s designed to give you face-to-face access to Oracle strategy and development leaders. They are there to talk to you. Come with your prepared questions, sit and listen, or tack onto a discussion with other Oracle Applications customers.

Here’s the schedule—which covers a broad array of topics from across Fusion Applications and other product lines.
