Better Analytics with Autonomous Data Warehouse

Michael Singer
Director, Product Marketing, Oracle Analytics

The biggest challenge in data management today is the manual labor necessary to create, provision, and maintain a database environment and deliver it to the end user.

But managing data is crucial to business success. Researchers with IDC suggest there is a massive advantage for those companies who use all data; an average of $430 billion in potential gains that can be taken away from competitors who are less data savvy. What's needed are systems that can increase productivity by automating repeated tasks, which can be labor intensive.

"Oracle has thought a great deal about how to give businesses the ability to take advantage of that potential, without adding a tremendous amount of strain on their IT resources", which is why we developed Oracle Autonomous Database," Oracle Product Marketing Manager, Christopher McCarthy says.

During a webcast focused on Oracle "Think Autonomous," McCarthy and Oracle Senior Director, Analytics Product Marketing, Barry Mostert outlined how Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, paired with the power of Oracle Analytics Cloud enables fast access to a sophisticated set of analytics that empower businesses to quickly extract data insights and make critical decisions in real time.

"In every business, speed has become the necessary basis of competition," Mostert says. "In our personal lives we expect fast food and fast trades, and we drive fast cars. But we also want fast profits, we expect fast platforms, we need fast processes, and of course we demand fast analytics. Together with the velocity of data and the voracity of data that is increasing, we need systems that can keep up with the changes and the accelerating growth that we are seeing. But we also know that too much speed with not enough planning or quality can actually be disastrous."

The Oracle Autonomous Database is focused on three goals:

  1. Self-Driving—Lowering cost and increased productivity eliminates the human labor needed to provision, secure, monitor, backup, recover, troubleshoot, and tune the database. The database automatically upgrades and patches itself while running. Testing automation ensures that all changes are safe. It also enables increases and decreases in compute or storage without downtime.
  1. Self-Securing—Lowering risk through protection from external attacks and from malicious internal users. The system automatically applies security updates with no downtime and automatic encryption of all data.
  1. Self-Repairing—Providing higher availability and automation eliminates administrator errors with extreme availability and less than 30 minutes downtime per year including planned maintenance.

One incredibly powerful use of Autonomous Database Capabilities is Oracle Autonomous Analytics Cloud (OAAC). The Autonomous Data Warehouse helps IT and businesses work together to meet the evolving needs of their business and support any key function of the organization.  OAAC supports any data type, source, and size, and is a unified platform that allows you to take in any data, easily store it, and rapidly process it to deliver valuable insights within your analytics layer.

For example, car rental company Hertz is currently utilizing the Autonomous Data Warehouse to reduce IT administration, and increase data security, and analyzes their data in the Oracle Autonomous Analytics Cloud.
