Did you know?

• that "Java for Business" has offered Java 1.4.2 and Java 5 (both EOL'd) support to paying customers for the past 3 years ?
• that Doug Lea committed to working on OpenJDK ?
• that Oracle proposed the Apache Foundation and Red Hat for the JCP ratified seats ?
• that JCP membership is free for individual members ?

just sayin'...

Comments:

Yes, but you'd be surprised how many people are proclaiming the world is coming to and end based on sloppy reporting.

It would help if Oracle was a bit more transparant since everything they do now is under a magnifying glass.
For example, the whole Apple JDK situation would be a lot easier if Oracle announced right away what their intentions are (good or bad, at least we would know)

Same here, most likely nothing bad was meant (both Sun and Oracle have had commercial VM's and the world didn't end yet)

thanks Barry. I think that it's safe to say that on the Mac OS JDK thingy, Oracle is working with the obvious other company.

Nice post! I did not know!

I have a question: what are "ratified seats" ?

Posted by tecnotron on novembre 08, 2010 at 10:02 AM CET #

ratified seats require simple majority of those who cast a vote (open seats are for nominees who receive the most votes).

Sure, I know, but it's easy to see how the more panicky people will misread just about anything.

Same thing happened with Glassfish when it was announced to be a "Departmental" solution and in the end Glassfish turned out just fine.
Some damage control was needed to reassure users.

I guess we can't change people, but it's encouraging to see that Oracle is stepping up trying to open itself up a bit more.
