Migration of ASM on Raw Devices to ASMLib

Alejandro Vargas

There are many advantages to the use on Linux of ASMLib for ASM management instead of configuring ASM on raw devices.

This document describe the process of migrating ASM configured with Raw devices to ASM managed with ASMLib.

The main advantages of using ASMLib for ASM management instead of RAW devices are:

ASMLib takes care of

1) Device name labels
2) Device ownership and permissions management
3) Async I/O management
4) I/O optimization
5) Sanity checkups

Currently I am using 10.2.0.3 4-node RAC + ASM on Sun Solaris 64 bit, however, I am not sure what benefits ASMLib could bring. Do you have any white papers or articles compare in detail the differnces between ASM instance and ASMLib ? Thanks very much,

    Lei,
ASMLib is available only for Linux at this moment.
It manages ownership, permissions, labeling, async IO, IO optimization and easy disc discovery.
