Expert Exchange (chat session) with ZFS engineers

Sun is hosting an Expert Exchange on ZFS. Basically this is an interactive chat session where you can ask fellow ZFS engineer Bill Moore and I questions about ZFS. The session will be this Wednesday, September 15 from 10-11am PDT. You can find more information here.

A transcript of the chat session is now available (click on 'archives' from the expert exchange website).

Two new questions I thought of:

1) Can you mix SCSI and IDE drives? (I'd assume so)

2) How do you feel about competiting with NetApp? They might be the biggest loser from all this. Niagara system + Solaris 10 (ZFS, Zones, NFSv4, new networking stack) should be very competitive.

Chris,

Yes, you can mix SCSI and IDE disks in a single pool.

NetApp has an excellent filesystem (WAFL) and makes great products. I don't think they'll be the "biggest loser" (though of course we'd like ZFS to eventually occupy as much market share as possible :-).

Greetings. Just read Tuesday's (9/14) feature story on ZFS. Sorry I missed the chat session. What's happening behind the scenes in the shared storage pool? RAID 0,10,5? Also, is there some facility for remote site replication? With a transactional object model, it would seem feasible (and logical). Thanks. --Doug Eckert

Doug,
Thanks for your interest in ZFS! ZFS will support mirroring (raid 1), RAID-5, and dynamic striping (raid 0). We're investigating how best to implement remote replication in a future release.
