Oracle Academy Rome Celebrates Women in Computing with ACM at MAXXI Museum

Jane Richardson
Senior Director, EMEA

The Sixth Annual ACM-W Conference in Rome, WomENcourage, was formally opened by the Minister for Equal Opportunities and Families, Elena Bonetti, and over September 16-18, 2019, Oracle Academy was pleased to support women in computing through our sponsorship of and participation in this event. Oracle Academy Program Manager Roberta Battagli, (pictured) was there to share information on our educational resources in Java, database, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

WomENcourage brings together women in the computing profession and related technical fields to exchange knowledge and experience and provide special support for women who are pursuing their academic degrees and starting their careers in computing. Through a program packed with insightful topics and engaging educational and networking activities, womENcourage provides a unique experience of the collective energy, drive, and excellence that professional women share to support each other.

The international audience of more than 400 students and educators were excited to hear not only about Oracle Academy free resources, but also to hear an inspiring keynote speech   delivered by Oracle Innovation Business Solution Team Leader Gabriele Provinciali on Proxima IoT and Microservices in a programmable Smart City.
The Proxima City project is a cloud-connected and intelligent city model, based on Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Oracle Cloud resources and LEGO bricks, which provides an integrated experience to citizens, administrations and industries. Proxima City includes a number of Edge Services components coded in different languages and environments (C, Java, JavaScript, Python) such as Smart Trash, Smart Lighting, Energy Monitoring, Smart Parking, and Smart Safety.

The Edge Services are connected, via IoT and a serverless architecture, to Cloud Services (Chatbot, Dashboards, Stream Analytics) allowing data-at-rest and data-in-motion analysis and value-added services provided to citizens.

The Proxima City model can be used as a Software Development Kit to generate events from the physical world and process events both in the Edge environment and the Cloud environment, allowing design and testing of a new generation of user-centric services.

Students were keen to put their Smart skills to work learning and understanding where to apply for Oracle internships as well as graduate roles, and understanding the benefits of their institution’s membership in Oracle Academy.
