Did You See It All?

They went for the keynotes and sessions, the exhibits and demos, the networking, and the fun. And the attendees at Oracle OpenWorld 2014 were not disappointed.

The cloud was top of mind at the conference, especially with the keynote speakers:

Sunday—Oracle Executive Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison talked about the recent Oracle technology built for the cloud.

Monday—Oracle CEO Mark Hurd discussed a new era of social and mobile technologies, powered by cloud.

Tuesday—Oracle Executive Vice President of product development Thomas Kurian examined three major topics—big data, mobility, and…yes…the cloud. And Larry Ellison’s keynote included a discussion of capabilities to help customers move on-premises databases and applications to Oracle Cloud.

Wednesday—Oracle Executive Vice President of systems John Fowler looked at how the latest Oracle Cloud engineered systems technologies are benefiting customers.

The cloud was also the subject of sessions across the conference’s focus areas, or “Centrals.” In total at Oracle OpenWorld, there were 2,707 sessions in 17 venues.

What did attendees do when they were not in sessions? Well, there were 460 partner exhibits to view—most of them in the Moscone West and Moscone South Exhibition Halls. In the second-floor lobby of Moscone West, attendees could check out the Oracle SRM Social Intelligence Center. Downstairs in the Exhibition Hall, they could ask support questions at the Oracle Support Stars Bar, play a little ping-pong in Ping-Pong Alley, or get a signed hat from Team Oracle’s Sean D. Tucker.

As in years past, the Oracle Engineered Systems Showcase in Moscone North was a center of attention, with two of the biggest crowd-pleasers being Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance and Oracle’s Virtual Compute Appliance.

Moscone South was the destination for getting news and advice in the User Groups Pavilion and Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Lounge or checking out the latest Oracle and ORACLE TEAM USA fashions in the Oracle apparel stores or browsing the offerings at the Oracle Bookstore. On Howard Street, attendees could hear about ORACLE TEAM USA’s America’s Cup victory and view the winning boat.

And then, there were the parties...er…networking opportunities—the biggest and grandest of all being the Oracle Appreciation Event on Treasure Island with Aerosmith, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Spacehog.
