Graphical console in Oracle VM

Oracle has it reasons to NOT ship Oracle VM with all the bells and whistles of a fancy Gnome X-Window environment. This has to do with vulnerabilities, not tested situations of software combination's and whatever reason that makes Oracle VM not to behave as tested and intended.

So I would never recommend to install X Window on any serious Oracle VM system, but still, for 'home' installations where you may also want to use this great product you may decide to use a graphical console.

So, in order to set this up, I did the following:
- cd /etc/yum.repos.d
- wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-el5.repo
(edit the repo file and enable 5u3 for Oracle VM 2.1.2)
- yum groupinstall "X Window System"
- yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" --skip-broken

And... then.. startx..

The VM templates are my primary reason for using Oracle VM.
They allow me to save lots of valuable time.

p.s: change SELINUX=enforcing to SELINUX=permissive in /etc/selinux/config or your machine will be rebooting forever.

Comments:

If you add software to OVS, obviously for testing purposes, you might want to give dom-0 Somers more ram :)

Agree, good point. Also, installing a smaller footprint is also a possibility.
