Part 12: Glassfish V3 Pet Catalog sample DEMO in VM Template - Clean and Convert

OpenSolaris 200906 JeOS Prototype was designed as PURE CLI enviroment providing main building stone for creation of Virtual Appliances or VM Templates

In this example I will DEMOnstrate creation of Evaluation type Virtual Appliance / VM Template which will leveradge OpenSolaris 200906 JeOS prototype and just in Dec/09 released Glassfish v3, Java EE 6 and Netbeans 6.8 with simple Java EE 6 demo. This entry is part of Virtual Appliances & OVF workshop.

New Glassfish V3 introduce an unique network repository based modular structure, so we can more easily create really simple initial DEMO setup which user can extend by installation more samples right from Glassfish V3 repository or from Netbeans GUI.


Step 6c: Generate VirtualBOX 3.x VDI IDE format

Old virtual box 1.6.x is still very stable on old machines without CPU Assisted Virtualization Support

OpenSolaris VMimages can't be simple converted on virtual disk level like recent Linux distributions (See for expmale Jumpbox stuff),
due to blocking issue 6795637 Implement full zfs root disk portability, zfs boot must not be dependent on install hardware config,
but converted disk can be make bootable with conversions with procedure 5785 Document procedure how to FIX boot of OpenSolaris manually for P2V or V2V

Basic idea here is then ZPOOL import from booted Live-CD will write a boot data back to boot pool.

I will use Live-CD media from OpenSolaris 200906 Virtualization Assistant Live-CD Proof of Concept

Step 6d: Generate Parallels format

Parallels products are very popular on MACs, they use its proprietary HDD virtual disk format.

Step 6e: Generate xVM/XEN compatible PARA and HVM RAW disk formats

I will use a Oracle VM 2.2, Old Linux, New Linux and xVM OpenSolaris? 200906+ compatible configurations
where a preallocated RAW virtual disks are used (xVM can use in 200906 growable VMDK)
So disk size will be limited to 8GB, remember we use originally 16GB virtual growable disk.

To speed up process I will use a predefined systems from corresponding JeOS images,
plus ZFS receive procedure from Parallels image section.

Install OpenSolaris 200906 with xVM Hypervisor

Install OpenSolaris 2009.06 from Live -CD

 1. Select Mouse , attach !OpenSolaris 2009.06 CD image (B108)
 2.  Langs default to English
 3. Wait after GUI comes up and Click on Install !OpenSolaris
 4. Use whole disk
 5. Set time zone (important !!!)
 6. Root password "osol0609" , osol/justone1
 7. Click install and reboot after
