Frankfurt Marathon 2008, IronMan Switzerland 2009

I've finally taken the plunge - I have entered IronMan Switzerland on 12th July 2009.

For anyone that doesn't know what this is, it's a triathlon, a long triathlon - 2.4 miles swim + 112 miles bike + 26.2 miles run (marathon), and yes, all on the same day one after the other. I've been postponing this for years with the excuse of children not giving me enough time to train, but now they are a little older, I should have no excuse as long as I can stay uninjured. Training proper starts around xmas following the 30 week training plan from the book "Iron Fit" by Don Fink

I've done two half-IronMan races in the past, but it's still a big step into the unknown.

As an objective before the IronMan I am training for the Frankfurt Marathon in October 2008 using 3+2 training routines from FIRST - I like the idea of this kind of training, there are 3 quality runs a week and a minimum of 2 x-training, perfect for those not wanting to run more often and risk injury. The plan is to run the marathon in 3:15, but as I've never done one before, I'd be happy with around 3:30.

Good Luck Mark.

This is great challenge and for sure must be personally gratifying to know one can complete this challenge. Keep posting updates on your trainings.

Thanks for the encouragement Malkit, I'll need it. I was prompted to start this entry after reading your escapade into the mountains above Monrovia !
I've taken your advice and started posting my training.

Mark,

Just wanted to say that I am also going to do the Frankfurt Marathon this year and I have the same target time as you of 3:15. I did it last year in 3:48 and the year before I did Amsterdam in 4:06.

That Amsterdam time was all down to the classic first marathon mistake of starting like a bat out of hell only to fall to pieces halfway and holding on to the finish.

I will look at your FIRST training method and check on your progress.

Good luck and all the best
Stephen

Thanks Stephen, hope you manage the 3:15.
As for me, I'm currently having doubts about my ability to manage both the distance and the pace, but I keep telling myself there are still 10 weeks to go and I can make the improvements.
I have nothing but respect for anyone that can run a marathon in 3:15 or less, I now have an idea what that takes.
