Quick Tip: UPK Player Search URL

Here's a quick and easy way to deliver a filtered list of content to UPK users.

Using the UPK Player, find a search term that results in the desired list of content. For instance, search for "payroll" (remove the quotes) if you wanted to find content related to payroll. You can share this search with UPK users by providing them with the following URL:

http://UPK.Content.Location/?search=payroll

Obviously, you will need to replace UPK.Content.Location with the server name and path to your deployed UPK content. When users access this URL, they will see the Player with the search term "payroll" filled into the search field and the search results below.

As an author, you can use keywords or bubble text to create groupings of content that can be linked in this way. For instance, if you wanted to group several topics together, you would simply add the desired keyword to each topic--I'll use "group1" as my example keyword. After you publish the outline of content, do a search for your keyword, in my example, "group1", and verify the desired topics are listed. Now you can create a link to this list of content using the search term as I described above. Here's what the URL would look like in my example:

http://UPK.Content.Location/?search=group1

This is a great way to share a specific selection of content with UPK Player users. Write a comment to share with us how you will use this in your UPK deployment.

Comments:

Thanks, this is saving us hours of publishing time. Related to this post, is there a way to also default the "View filtered outline" option instead of just displaying the default list?

Marc Great tip. Linked to this have you ever provided a specific link/url to an individual topic in a published player package? How do you discover the topic's url? Andy

Hello Andy, Great question. There is a kp.html in the root of the published Player folder. Once you put the Player on a web server, open the kp.html and you'll find links to all of your topics in all of the available modes. Right click the link and copy the link address. You could also view the source or the deployed kp.html. There is a section in "Content Deployment.pdf" entitled "Launch Content from Other Applications" which describes this in greater detail. Marc

Hello Jason, I don't think there is way to default to view the filtered outline. I'll make sure the enhancement database is updated with the request. Marc
