Hands-On-Lab "Upgrade, Migrate & Consolidate to Oracle Database 12c" available for DOWNLOAD now!

Wow ... that was a hard piece of work. Roy put a lot of effort into getting our Hands-On-Lab on OTN for download. We promised to have it available after OOW - or at least a description how to create it by yourself. And finally it's there. Find it here:

A few important things to mention before you start the download:

  • It's a Virtual Box image
  • You will need to install Oracle Virtual Box first - and please install also the VBox Extensions
  • Your PC must have a 64-bit host operating system
  • You need to enable Virtualization options in your computer's BIOS
  • You PC should have at least 4GB of RAM - having 8GB is very helpful
  • A fast disk (SSD) will speed up things
  • The instructions are available for download but are included in the download as well
  • The lab will guide you through the following tasks:
    1. Upgrade an 11.2.0.4 database to Oracle 12.1.0.2
    2. Plug in this database into a 12.1.0.2 CDB
    3. Migrate an 11.2.0.4 database with Full Transportable Export into another PDB
    4. Unplug an 12.1.0.1 PDB and plug/upgrade it into an 12.1.0.2 CDB

You'll find a picture as screen background inside the VBox image always giving you guidance about "what to accomplish" and "how to switch environments".

Enjoy :-)

OOW 2014 - Upgrade Hands-On-Lab at NIKKO HOTEL

This year's Oracle Open World will be a real challenge logistically for us. Non-privileged employees were assigned to airport hotels only. So Roy, Joe, Dean and I stay >16 miles (>25km) away from Moscone Center. And to make things even more complicated due to some reconstruction at the Moscone Center (I hope they'll get rid of their 1990s audio equipment and such) our Hands On Labs for instance are at the NIKKO Hotel, not at the Marriott Marquee anymore.

These are the dates for our HOL about How to upgrade to Oracle Database 12c and plug into Oracle Multitenant:

  • Monday , Sep 29 - 11:45 AM in Hotel Nikko - Bay View (0/32)
  • Tuesday , Sep 30 - 5:15 PM in Hotel Nikko - Bay View (0/32)
  • Wednesday, Oct 01 - 4:15 PM in Hotel Nikko - Bay View (0/32)
  • Thursday , Oct 02 - 8:30 AM in Hotel Nikko - Bay View (0/32)
Follow this link to the OOW Session Agenda - ID of the Labs is [HOL9127] - and usually you'll have to hurry as the 50 seats per lab sell out quickly.

Especially Thursday will be a tough call to be there at 8:30am in the morning. At least traffic on 101 won't be that terrible at such a night time ;-)

How to SET TIMING ON for parallel upgrades to 12c?

Have you asked yourself how to get timings in an Oracle Database 12c upgrade for all statements?

When you run the parallel upgrade via catctl.pl, the parallel upgrade Perl driving script in Oracle Database 12c, you may also want to get timings written in your logfile during execution. As catctl.pl does not offer an option yet the best way to achieve this is to edit the catupses.sql script in $ORACLE/rdbms/admin as this script will get called all time over and over again throughout all steps of theupgrade run.

Just add these lines marked in RED to catupses.sql and start your upgrade:

Rem =============================================
Rem Call Common session settings
Rem =============================================
@@catpses.sql

Rem =============================================
Rem  Set Timing On during the Upgrade
Rem =============================================
SET TIMING ON;

Rem =============================================
Rem Turn off PL/SQL event used by APPS
Rem =============================================
ALTER SESSION SET EVENTS='10933 trace name context off'
;

-Mike

PS: This may become the default in a future patch set ;-)
