Thank you for coming to our workshops :-)
And here's the Upgrade to 12c Viewlet

Wow!!! That was a thrilling week. With great people in Singapore, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur!!! Thanks for coming by and thanks for listening. Now it will be your task to upgrade/migrate to Oracle Database 12c as soon as possible ;-)

We've had:

  • 105 people in Singapore on Tueday, January 21
  • 82 people in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 22
  • 108 people in KL on Thursday, January 23

and many good discussions within the breaks or after the workshop. And thanks to those who send an email already.

For us heading out directly after the workshops to rush to the airport becomes a bit strenous during the week. But overall having the chance to talk to you and get you some good insight view about upgrades, migrations and consolidation pays out and is worth it :-)

As promissed we did upload the Upgrade to Oracle Database 12c Viewlet now to Youtube. No audio yet - will come in a later stage as I will have to re-record it with another software. And more to come - so please stay tuned. I will announce it as soon as they'll be available. Furthermore I will add a new tag on the right column (this layout unfortunately does not allow to add something on the left column) so after some time you'll see a selection of videos there.

Workshops 2013 - Recap and Map

2013 wasn't a quiet year. But due to the slip of Oracle Database 12c we've had way less workshops than in the years before. But less workshops doesn't mean less work. It just means different tasks such as more development work, refreshing our entire slide deck (will be uploaded tonight in a fresh new version), learning about new stuff such as Oracle Multitenant, attending at the OTN ACE Tour in Scandinavia, South and Mid America.

In tradition we'll publish a map with markers in countries Roy and I had been in the past year. You can access it in FULL SIZE (or click on the map below) or just look at the tiny picture below.

And you may compare it to 2012 and 2011.

My statistics on flying are still showing penty of "air" time - as you may or may not know more or less almost everything in Coach/Economy/Cattle class :-(

I like especially this stat here - in my peak year 2011 I had over 450 hours in the air. Last year it were just 217 hours (i.e.almost a forth of the time a crew member spends up in the air - time on the runway and to/from the airport is not included here) but a crew member's job is to work for the airline - and I work in addition to all that travel ;-)

Finally the last one here - flown around the globe almost 4x.

CU you somewhere in 2014 - it will just start on Saturday ...

DOAG Conference - Recap

This year's 2013 conference was the best DOAG Conference I have attended so far (and it was my 11th conference).  Actually due to the fact that I've had just one presentation (Working with Oracle Multitenant in the Real World - thanks to everybody coming by in the huge TOKIO room - that was really fun!) and a DOAG TV interview I've had enough time to see some other presentations. I did actually enjoy the Oak Table Stream in room SHANGHAI a lot - so many good stuff, I have really learned a lot.

So thanks to the organizers from the user group (and especially to Christian Trieb and his colleagues from DOAG for pushing this extra stream).

Nordics OTN ACE Tour 2013 - Recap

The Nordics OTN ACE Tour 2013 with stops in Stockholm, Ballerup/Copenhagen and Oslo is over. A very intense week with plenty of excellent presentations from Lonneke Dikmans, Sten Vesterli, Tim Hall and others. I'm always impressed how much those people know and how good they present. It's such a great learning experience. And there's always some time to talk about weired things apart from the Oracle cosmos. So thanks a lot, folks - it was a pleasure to travel with you.

And many many thanks also to the people from ORCAN, DOUG and OUGN. Everything worked out so well. And thanks for the great gifts. the dinners, everything!!!

Of course a special thanks to all the people who went to my presentations. Hope you've enjoyed it - and sorry for any overtiming ;-) But as Tim said yesterday in the Shuttle Bus back to the airport: "45 min slots don't work out at all" :-) The final slide set about "Different Ways to Upgrade, Migrate and Consolidate into Oracle Database 12c including Oracle Multitenant, New Features and other stuff" can be downloaded via this link.

Hope to see you all again soon - and let me know once you have successfully upgraded to Oracle Database 12c or in case you'd like to become one of our Upgrade Reference Customers.

Cheers - Mike

PS: One thing I couldn't really understand - why is that thing below not labeled simply GRAPE JUICE??? And who's honestly drinking that?

Muchas gracias to everybody who did attend our Hands-On-Lab on Monday and Roy's presentation yesterday at the OTN Tour 2013 in Montevideo. OTN Tour South America: Uruguay, Argentina & Brazil

I really don't look forward to a 20 hour trip in coach from Munich to Montevideo, Uruguay. But I'm looking forward to meet and see many tech folks in Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Sao Paolo during the next week. Roy and I will deliver a Hands-On-Lab in Montevideo on Monday and in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. Plus presentations on Tuesday, Thursday and finally Saturday in Sao Paolo. Well, and our colleagues in Brazil have taken the chance to schedule 3 customer visits in Rio and Sao Paolo on Friday in between :-) After this week I will need a few days off :-)

Here's the link to the event on August 5 and 6, 2013 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Then we'll move on with the ferry boat crossing the Rio Della Plata to Buenos Aires for August 7 and 8, 2013.

And finally we'll be in Sao Paolo on August 10, 2013.

So again, here's the overview:

Back Home ...

Now finally back from my short trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. Flying out Monday overnight, returning Friday morning after another overnight flight (all Eco). But thanks to Turkish Airlines - including the short stop-over in Istanbul was worth it as the seating comfort in Turkish's economy class is far better than Lufthansa's - as is the food and especially the entertainment system, the service ... almost everything. And luckily the Turkish Airline's employees didn't go on strike in Thursday :-)

But after running now 6 internal Oracle Database 12c: Upgrade, Migrate and Consolidate workshops in the US and in EMEA I've learned a lot from our over 180 participants doing the full Hands-On part of the workshop.

I'm really looking forward to the release date :-)

Mile High ... Collaborate 2013 in Denver

Collaborate 2013 is almost over - we are running our final Hands-On-Lab session right now in the Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. For those seeking for the Hands-On-Lab Instructions for our session please be patient until Oracle Database 12c gets released. As soon as this happens we'll offer you the HOL Instructions plus many more information about Oracle Database 12c and the different upgrade and migration paths.

Denver apparently has become my no.3 US city - not only because the mountains are so close by. But the city itself is really worth a visit :-) Please find some impressions below :-) And see you next year at Collaborate 2014 on April 7-11 in Las Vegas.

Yes, again SNOW in Denver ... well ...

OTN APAC Tour 2012: Bangkok, Thailand - RECAP

Thanks to everybody who did attend at the OTN APAC Tour in Bangkok on Monday, Oct 21. It was a pleasure for me to be back in Bangkok again even though I didn't have much time again due to my overnight flight to Seoul after the workshop.

But thanks for your questions - I will follow up as soon as I'm getting back home. And thanks to Francisco Alvarez, Oracle ACE Director from New Zealand, for inviting me. It was a pleasure presenting together with Francisco, Kamran Nagayev, Oracle ACE Director from Azerbaidjan and Tanakorn Tavornsasnavong from Bangkok. I have learned a lot during that day.

Mike Dietrich, Francisco Alvarez Munos, Kamran Agayev

In case you'd like to download my presentations from this day please find theme via this link. You may access the other slides on either the local OTN page or get them directly from Francisco's blog and Kamran's blog (and you'll find a lot of excellent and helpful articles there as well).

Oracle 11g Database Upgrade and Migration Seminar - NYC

I'd like to thank everybody who attended my Upgrade and Migration workshop in Albany yesterday. We had a good crowd with some very insightful questions. As a reminder, you can download the latest copy of the slides here (this is the same link that you'll find in the Slide Download center on the right sidebar of this blog).

Seal of the State of New York

I did get a few questions asking when the next upgrade workshop would be. The answer is May 15, in New York City. This is organized by our Public Sector pre-sales team.

Oracle 11g Database Upgrade Seminar - NYC

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

9:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Budget and resource constraints are leading the government towards consolidation, virtualization and the cloud to optimize efficiency and streamline operations. Where should government start in achieving these goals?

A step in the right direction is to upgrade your databases to Oracle 11g. Oracle is helping organizations deliver a higher quality of service to citizens, employees and other stakeholders, while reducing the cost of computing through consolidation, reduced storage and the elimination of idle redundancy.

With Oracle 11g, organizations:

  • Deliver more information with higher quality of service
  • Make more efficient use of budgets
  • Reduce the risk of change in data centers

“We have achieved all of our goals in migrating our Oracle applications to Red Hat Linux and Oracle Database 11g. We have increased performance by 30%, we have had little to no unplanned downtime, and to top it off, we have saved US$200,000 annually in licensing and maintenance costs and avoided US$250,000 in additional hardware expenses.” – Angelo Romano, IT Manager, Office of the Comptroller, State of Connecticut

This seminar will provide everything you need to know about upgrading to Database 11g including:

  • All the required preparatory steps
  • Database upgrade strategies
  • Post-upgrade performance analysis
  • Helpful tips and common pitfalls to watch out for

Upcoming Workshops in Jakarta, Singapore and Bangkok

Next week will be again a travel week - and it means going from deep frosty winter into "warmer" areas of the world. But we are really looking forward to meet you in Jakarta, Singapore and Bangkok. And in case you just read this now there are still seats open as far as I know :-)

Saturday Feb 04, 2012

Obrigado :-)

Thanks a lot to everybody who did visit our workshops in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the past days. And actually our "Thank You" or Obrigado! can't express how Roy and me felt in the past days. I believe I've never felt so welcome - you all, customers, partners and Oracle folks were simply great. Thanks a lot for that. We've had a great time - and we hope you had some fun as well and enjoyed the hands-on lab as well.

Let us know if anything with your upgrades does not run as desired - or if all worked out well. And also if you'd like to try the "Turbo xTTS" technique. The note got published last night and I'll write something about it in the upcoming weeks.

So we hope to see you again - maybe in 2014 during the World Cup ;-) I'll push Murilo to setup another series of workshops by then ;-)

And thanks a lot for all your comments and feedbacks - we really appreciate that!!

Obrigado!!!

PS: Sorry for the typo in obrigado - and thanks to all who'd let me know ;-)
